Interests
I'm interested in pretty much everything Japanese! I <3 J-dramas, J-music, and the Japanese language. I also like to play Volleyball and watch Hockey... but not at the same time, usually.

I'll be using a laptop, so I guess maybe a pcmcia card is the fastest type of card to use.
It says it's an analog TV tuner card, but they have digital ones available as well. Is a digital one any better than an analog one? And what the heck is that antenna for? Are you supposed to hook that directly into a TV, because I probably won't have one of those. I was looking to hook my computer right into the cable outlet.

Well as for cheap, if you are going to have a PC anyway, why not get a TV capture card? Just make sure it works for PAL, as I believe Japanese TV is in PAL. You could probably Ebay for one before you go.
Here, I've done the work for you:

Pretty cheap, too. I expected them to be around $100-$200 USD.
As for tutorials, I would guess they come with instructions/help file on driver disk/etc, so it should not be tough to get the raw footage. As for converting video from one format to another, I can't help you. I failed miserably last year trying to convert .VOB files to .AVI, but there are people here who can help you.
EDIT: Oh, you're from Nashville? I was born in Knoxville!
Oh wow. Yay! Those ARE cheap! I will try to pick one up before I go. I'm sure that'll be easier than trying to figure out how to buy one in Japan. Thanks!
And hooray Tennessee!
