Was Mari the ugly duckling of Morning Musume when she started or just simply underestimated ??  

 

I just watched a super old concert (Morning Musume & Michiyo Heike - Hello) from 1998, and Mari was basically a backup singer with practically zero camera time and only like two brief solo lines.

Even in interview segments she was very lifeless and looked like she either felt a need to be reserved and was shy or hadn't developed her explosive personality yet... thoughts?

I have that DVD.  Haven't watched it in a while.  I should pull that out sometime.  Mari had been with the group only about six months at that point and if I had to guess I'd say it was a combination of not having established a personality of her own yet as well as a need to be reserved as still a newer member of the group.  Just my thoughts on it.
