This time, we’ll be featuring the two new members: the super-diligent Kaga Kaede and the always-smiling Yokoyama Reina. Together, the two hold a charm of being polar opposites. How will they answer when asked the same questions? We’ll also have them talk about what to look out for in their new songs. It’s a long interview worth reading!
―― Speaking of “Jealousy Jealousy”, the second song from your double A-side single releasing on March 8, I want to ask about the top three members you’re most jealous of. “Jealousy” is pretty close to “admiration”. How about it?Yokoyama: Okay! I’ve decided!
Kaga: Hmm, I guess I shouldn’t put Yokoyama in this ranking. [T/N: this interview is already entirely about Kaga/Yokoyama, so she’s saying she should pick other members even though Yokoyama would normally be in this ranking.]
―― Let’s start with Yokoyama-san then. In third place?Yokoyama: In third place! Durudurudurudurduuruduru~pan! (drumrolling sound effect)
Kaga: Do we really need that?!
Yokoyama: (laugh) Durudurdurutan! (faster than before) In third place is Iikubo Haruna-san. Iikubo-san is really good at talking! I really want to be able to rile everyone up during MCs and have fun doing so too!
―― Because you enjoying talking, right?Yokoyama: Yes. What’s amazing about Iikubo-san is that she tells funny stories in the dressing room all the time to make everyone laugh. I’m envious of how she always has funny stories and how she can tell them in an engaging way. I’m super jealous.
―― Jealous of Iikubo-san’s talking skills.Yokoyama: Yes! I’m jealous!
―― Well then, Kaga-san. Have you decided?Yokoyama: Durudu…
Kaga: (cutting her off) In third place for me is Nonaka Miki-san.
Yokoyama: Huh?
―― (laugh). What about Nonaka-san makes you jealous?Kaga: Nonaka-san is pretty scatter-brained. She trips pretty often, and even just that gets laughs from others. I wish I could be like that. But it seems that lately she hasn’t been tripping as much, which everyone has been talking about.
――
Are you a little envious of her?Kaga: Yes. The other day, I slipped on the stairs, but I somehow managed alright by grabbing onto the handrail in time. Everyone was pretty worried for me. Later, Ishida-san told me that Nonaka-san had slipped in the same place too, but that time they turned it into a joke instead, so I’m envious.
Yokoyama: True.
――
So in third place for Kaga-san, is Nonaka-san who can easily take the spotlight and make everyone laugh.Kaga &
Yokoyama: (laugh)
―― Next then, let’s hear Yokoyama-san’s second place!Yokoyama: In second place is! Durudurudurduru~ pan! It’s Makino Maria-san.
―― Please tell us why.Yokoyama: In a single sentence, it’s because she’s “slim”. Makino-san eats a lot. Um… during lunch between concerts, I have this image of her being a pretty big eater. Makino-san loves chocolate, and I see her eating that a lot, but her figure… Even though she eats so much, her face is cute and small. Her figure is so nice I nearly want to ask if she’s eating breakfast and dinner properly. I’m jealous~
―― Yokoyama-san, how are your eating habits?Yokoyama: I think I eat quite a bit too? Oh, I’m a pretty fast eater!
Kaga: Hm… what should I do. I was going to answer the exact same thing….
Yokoyama: Oh my!
Kaga: In second place for me is also Makino-san because she’s so slender. She eats so much but her figure is still amazing. Makino-san never turtns down food whenever it’s offered after concerts or while we’re commuting. She’ll scarf down food by herself even if no one else feels like eating. But it seems she doesn’t gain the weight at all. I gain easily, so I have to be careful.
―― Secretly, you’re thinking “isn’t Makino-san eating too much?” right? (laugh)Kaga &
Yokoyama: No no no!
Yokoyama: I’m jealous because she eats so much but doesn’t get fat!
Kaga: Yes! That’s what makes me jealous.
―― Finally, please announce who is in first place!Yokoyama: In first place is! Durdurudurudurduruduru, I, I’m not doing this very well (laugh). Durdurdurdurudurdurduru~pan! It’s Kudo Haruka-san!
―― And your reasoning?Yokoyama: Because she’s so popular… haha (laugh).
―― She’s popular even among the members huh.Yokoyama: Yes! I’m envious of how she’s popular with both girls and boys. Kudo-san has her
ikemen persona, but rather than being envious of that persona, I’m really more envious of how everyone calls her cute and cool and how she’s friendly and flirty with everyone. I’m so envious…
―― Yokoyama-san, do you like Kudo-san too?Yokoyama: Yes! I really like her!
―― Is part of why you’re jealous because you want to be flirty too but you can’t do it?Yokoyama: Hm, that’s not really it. I’m just envious that she’s popular. I want to be popular too.
―― What do you think is the reason behind Kudo-san’s popularity?Yokoyama: It has to be that
ikemen persona.
Kaga: That, and her personality too! In dressing rooms, she’ll pick up after everyone and throw out all the empty 2L plastic bottles after we’ve finished drinking them. Those are really things that we should be doing ourselves, but how she’ll just quietly do it for us is
ikemen. She has a kind of nonchalant kindness when no one’s looking.
Yokoyama: So cool~ I’m going to nonchalantly pick up plastic bottles too.
Kaga: Probably even if you do that…
Yokoyama: People will just say “thanks” to me and leave it at that (laugh)
―― Kaga-san, your first place, please!Kaga: Yes. In my first place is Sato Masaki-san!
Yokoyama: Oh, I think I can see why!
―― Please tell us why.Kaga: It’s because of her airheadedness. One time, we had to do some writing work and her pen didn’t work. Sato-san said “the ink won’t come out” while squeezing the pen, causing ink to splurge out. The piece of paper was ruined because of that. But instead of telling the manager about it, Sato-san simply put the ruined paper back into the bag it came from and grabbed a new piece… (laugh)
Yokoyama: (laugh) She’s so cute~!
Kaga: If I did that, I would get scolded 100%, but since it’s the airheaded Sato-san, everyone just thinks, “well, that can’t be helped”. I’m jealous of that.
―― I see. Kaga-san is the serious, diligent one, so you admire the clumsy Nonaka-san in third place and the airheaded Sato-san.Kaga: That might be right.
―― Thank you. Lastly, let’s talk about your new songs. This will be your debut single, correct?Kaga: “BRAND NEW MORNING” is a song signifying Morning Musume stepping into its 20th year. In the beginning, we have lyrics like “the beginning of the new era”, “we’ll go beyond time”, “we’ll go beyond the past”. We haven’t been in the group for long yet so singing these lyrics is a little nerve-wrecking. On the contrary, we want this song to put people at ease, like “hey, looks like 13th gen will be okay” so we practiced it lots. We both have solos in the in the B-melody section as well, so we’d like to sing it coolly while carrying the history and responsibility that comes with these 20 years.
―― What’s the other song “Jealousy Jealousy” like?Yokoyama: I feel really happy just to be able to sing a song by Tsunku-san. I really love Tsunku-san’s lyrics.
―― Is Tsunku season in full bloom in “Jealousy Jealousy”?Yokoyama: Yes! I was surprised by the lyrics “
jera jera jeracchau” [T/N: instead of using the proper Japanese word, it’s an Engrishy way of saying “I’m gonna be jealous”.] I would have never come up with that. A rap part where there should normally be an interlude also shocked me too. Everyone got really excited in the shooting for the music video since we got to dance while wearing colourful streetwear!
