Its pretty much only their own records left to break anymore , at least if it comes to singles, pretty much only thing left now is the 35th Smap Single which sold over two million copies, then they just need to push out some more Albums so they can beat Arashis Best of from 2009 which was in the Weekly Oricon Top 50 for more than year without interruption and then they can top the B'z stunt from 1998 who back then released two Best of Albums at the same time and each sold a couple million copies each.
Yeah, AKB is really doing a good job proving all those wrong who say music in physical formats would be dead.

Just a small correction/clarification:
http://en.wikipedia....les_Of_All_Time
Best selling Oricon artist ever was Masato Shimon with 4.547.000 copies. (not hating just correcting)
Rank Year Title Artist Sale
1 1975 Oyoge! Taiyaki-kun - Masato Shimon 4.547m
2 1972 Onna no Michi - Shiro Miya and Pinkara Trio 3.256m
3 2000 Tsunami - Southern All Stars 2.934m
4 1999 Dango 3 Kyodai - Kentarō Hayami, Ayumi Shigemori,Himawari Kids, Dango Gasshōdan 2.918m
5 1992 Kimi ga Iru Dake de - Kome Kome Club 2.895m
6 1991 Say Yes - Chage & Aska 2.822m
7 1994 Tomorrow Never Knows - Mr. Children 2.766m
8 1991 Oh! Yeah!/Love Story wa Totsuzen ni - Kazumasa Oda 2.587m
9 2003 Sekai ni Hitotsu dake no Hana - SMAP 2.573m
10 1995 Love Love Love/Arashi ga Kuru - Dreams Come True 2.488m
Still what AKB48 has done is very impressive! Congrats to them! Quite amazing if you keep in mind those are physical copies.
I wonder how good their download sales are? Any info on those?

I'm just not sure we should compare it to something from 72 / 75, but I completely forgot about Southern All Stars
<- waits for 3 million seller from AKB

No real organized chart for digital sales exists in Japan, there are some, but they are very incomplete. But from what is known its pretty much ruled by 3 groups, AKB Empire, Arashi and Exile.

On ringtones it is above 250.000 downloads (and under 500.000, next grade).
On PCs (Itunes and all that), still not reached 100.000. “Sakura no Ki ni Narou” has reached now 250.000 and "River" and "Oogoe Diamond" are reaching now, 100.000.

Otherwise for AKB48 it's all about the physical releases which are far more desirable, rather than mere digital versions.

I'm the opposite actually, I'd almost certainly buy some of their songs if they were available on iTunes. Sadly they are not.I personally wouldn't buy anything digital from AKB48 if I could.
Although I've found a few of their songs to be enjoyable I personally don't feel like they are worth shelling out the cost for a physical copy (including shipping & customs). Thats my personal opinion of course.
I'd gladly buy them digitally though, if they were available.

It's more than a cd. U definitely get more than what u paid for.
But as appealing as akb's physical singles and albums are, in the age of piracy, I find it hard to believe to see them surpass SMAP.

Yeah, you get so much stuff for the money, not just the CD but also a DVD that's actually worth of watching, bonus photos etc.
Hoping my copies arrive soon, CDJapan shipped them a while back. I have been avoiding all the links for the long version of the PV, I want to watch it when I get the single.

I personally wouldn't buy anything digital from AKB48 if I could. The exception would probably be songs like Dareka no Tameni which was a digital-only release.
Otherwise for AKB48 it's all about the physical releases which are far more desirable, rather than mere digital versions.
Wasn't "Dareka no Tameni" just a re-release as it available on AKB Stage A3?
Also, wasn't "Baby, Baby, Baby" a digital only release as well?
Anyway...
CDs are better since 1) you get some goodies if you pre-order and 2) you can rip the music to the bitrate you want as most online music stores won't sell songs with a bitrate higher than 256k!
The bad things about CDs are that 1) it's Expensive for foreign fans esp. once you add in the shipping cost, 2) if you don't pre-order, some titles may sell out quickly or 3) if you don't pre-order and it's still available, you lose out on the bonus items!

As for Baby, Baby, Baby, they released a song of it digitally (no physical CD single) - but then they also released a physical DVD box set
Even with the bad things you mention, the good things by far weigh out the bad things though - some bonuses have been beyond awesome.

I meant the digital release of the song, but yeah I own it on A3 stage CD too of course.

Ah, yes, the Team colored DVD sets... forgot about those! Thanks for the reminder.
The goodies are pretty good, again, if you pre-order the items so you can get the goodies.
Are we wotas now?

If other AKB wotas in Japan thinks I qualify to be a wota, or the girls themselves, then sure. But I don't know about myself calling me that.
For example, I still haven't attended theater shows, I haven't attended concerts, I haven't attended events, I haven't met the girls or anything, and I pretty much just consider myself a fan, nothing more nothing less
Works for me so far I guess.
