Was Airi ever the leader of C-ute, or did I just assume that forever because, well... she's the greatest?  I know Berryz "changed captains" at times, so just wondering if Maimi was always the leader.

Does that mean Erika Umeda was the leader when she was with C-ute?

Saki has always been the captain, and Maimi has always been the leader.

Erika was supposed to be, but she turned it down, so they gave it to Maimi

Not really a distinction, it's just how they decided to name their leaders (for example: In Kobushi factory they're calling Hirose Ayaka "boss")

Btw airi in that square selfie looks AMAZING!

Yes, according to what I have read, Erika felt she was not mature enough for the job.  Maimi accepted the job of °C-ute's Leader.  It was not easy at the beginning.  Everyone was so young.  They got homesick.  They cried a lot!!!  Maimi was always there for them.  Like a big sister, or a mother hen protecting her chicks.  Maimi always comforted them when they were upset.

There is even a video showing Maimi taking care of the girls of °C-ute.  If I can find it, I will post it.  :good:

EDIT:  Nope, I can't find it.  It is mostly Mai and Saki who were upset & crying.  Does anyone remember the video I am talking about?

Saki has always been the captain, and Maimi has always been the leader.

This is why I asked about a distinction between the terms "leader" and "captain"... two different people mentioned with two apparently different titles...

Ok I see the confusion.

Shimizu Saki- Berryz Kobo-> Captain

Nakajima Saki- C-ute

2 different Sakis, 2 different groups, both H!P Kids.

Shimizu is the one and only Captain of Berryz. It was decided to give her the title of "captain" instead of "leader" because the members were supposed to rotate with all the H!P Kids. Something like the captain of a soccer team I suppose.
As for Airi, she said she's glad to be the middle girl, nor the younger nor the older, nothing to care about.

It's not freaky, so they never "realize" it.
What I've learned about Japanese so far, is that you must first pay attention to these 2 things: Rule #1 and Context. After that, just pray they remember their high-school English class.

Some ex H!P members have said that althought they liked their jobs they didn't always feel comfortable with their male fanbase... More so with having to perform in tiny outfits in the way they do. The girls aren't stupid and know how sexualized idols are - I mean, they'd have to see that by now.

Just because the girls put on smiles and perform and do handshakes and all that doesn't mean they sometimes aren't grossed out or creeped out by some of their fans, or just feel generally uncomfortable. They are people.

Sorry .. These are situations where all idols in Japan(except those doing sexual image) would say they are uncomfortable or embarrass ..
What to you expect? them to say they love men going crazy over them or they love exhibiting their bodies in tiny outfit in front of men? its not going to happen .. XD
The truth is not in what they say because they can't say otherwise :)
