'Kubo and the Two Strings': go see it I hope that everyone is doing well, and that you enjoy the few remaining days of summer.
Today, I’d like to cover a movie that was recently released, “Kubo and the Two Strings.” It is a stop-motion animated film. It features a one-eyed boy, with tremendous talents in origami and storytelling. It is rated PG, and in my opinion, is appropriate for anyone from about age 6 and up.

I’ll try to say enough about the plot so you will know what you are getting into, but not so much to spoil the movie for you. Anyway, the boy goes on a quest, accompanied by two companions. These are a monkey and a beetle, voiced by Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey, respectively. They are both Oscar-winning actors, for whatever that is worth.

The movie has themes of venerating your ancestors and second chances. I don’t think they explicitly mention Japan, but they do mention origami and samurais. Also, they eat raw fish. So, it seems as if it is meant to take place in Japan. The film is beautifully shot. If you plan on seeing it, you should see it on the big screen. You will appreciate it much more than if you watch it on a TV or something smaller. I am not a supporter of Matthew McConaughey, but I have to give credit where credit is due. For my money, he did the best job with the voice acting among the entire cast.

In general, I think it is a good movie. There is plenty of action and a few twists and turns in the plot. There is even a little humor, here and there. I recommend that you see it. [As an aside, I read a review that called it ‘probably the best film of 2016 so far.’] Also, you would be wise to see it soon if you plan on seeing it in a theater. Movies like this often don’t have long theatrical runs. Finally, if you go see it, make sure to stick around for the credits. It shows how they filmed a scene with a giant skeleton monster, which was interesting.
