Going halfway DVD Magazine 31, the lack of screen time for Koharu seems kind of weird. I recall seeing her appearing in backstage shots of previous DVD Magazines making jokes or acting funny, but here, she seems far away, distant from the other girls. That is how I feel it. Gakisan appears and talks a little with her in front of the camera but that's all at the moment.

Maybe she was a little worried or thoughtful because of the announcement of her graduation? Maybe she was a little worried for other things that were happening in her life? Maybe there was just some bad editing that left a lot of stuff from her off the final cut of the DVD? It could be one of those. But I am seriously considering the possibility that, somehow, Koharu maybe didn't feel that well within Morning Musume anymore.

I am not thinking that Koharu may have felt disdain for the other girls at all. But the way she appears in camera, when she rarely does, she is not really there. I have always seen Koharu's personality as a little childish, a little crazy (in a cute way) and a little, just a little, difficult to handle because of the cute awkwardness to it. Could it be possible that somehow, most likely without noticing, the girls put Koharu to the side or Koharu herself got to a side because she didn't click within the group anymore? When I mean anymore, I am talking about that great chemistry that the girls are showing in this DVD. I mean, just look at them. Linlin and Junjun making all those jokes and playing around with Sayu, Reina, Eri, Aika and Gaki (Aichan most likely avoiding the camera a little because of her nervousness in front of the camera that we all know about). I remember when the cute Chinese girls seemed to struggle to belong. But all those girls seem so happy together and getting along so well in these videos, meanwhile Koharu just limit her comments to some brief words before the camera.

Perhaps, the girls innocently and unaware worked so close in their relationships with that great chemistry making Koharu feel like her personality didn't fit in within all of that? Maybe this was part of the reasons for her departure? Maybe I am wrong, I hope so. But Koharu's sadness has almost created a little rainy story in my mind that I can't shake off.

Good post M.D. There are known answers.

There is also the one fact that clearly stands out... Koharu is the best Morning Musume member of All-Time.

morning death, great point. (read it all) i noticed her distance during the dvd magazine where they played the staring games, rock-paper-scissors, stacking dominoes, etc. when she'd win the games, she seemed to be cheering only for herself, the others were more like "oh man..."

in the beginning, koharu was fine, but toward the end, she really did distance herself. i was never a fan of hers, and upon hearing the news of her leaving, it didn't effect me in the least. but, i'm hoping she's glad with the decision that was made, and she'll go off and do bigger and better things. (she's getting a blog, so that's a start)

^i beg to differ, tony k.

^^ Not to ruin your fanboi-party, but Koharu certainly isn't the best MMM. I wouldn't consider her to be in the top five the current members. People should really take a history-lesson, and study the greatness that was known as the golden era of MM.
Back to Koharu; She never did learn to sing. All those flaws in her singing she had during her first audition for Tsunku, where more or less still present when she graduated. I also thought she never fitted the MM image.

We don't know the circumstances of why she left, so it's hard to say what happened. Was Koharu uncomfortable with the rest of the group, or was the rest of the group made uncomfortable by Koharu? I can understand the group unconsciously bonding without her a bit as the graduation neared, if it wasn't a completely comfortable split.

I'm with GEL on this one, too, I thought she was cute and that she had her moments, but I wasn't really affected by her leaving. Not in the same way that I would feel if Ai-chan, Eri, or Aika left. Still, I hope she moves on to bigger and better things.

Man, and I wrote that with the hope that someone would come here and tell me something in the lines of: "Hey, what the hell are you talking about?! Don't you know anything from Morning Musume you poser? Two weeks before Koha's graduation she was crashing at the girls' houses and taking bath together with them". Something like that. Seems like I am not the only one who thinks this I guess.

Glassy, I know what you mean but I honestly grew to have an attachment to her. I liked her personality, she really stands out from the rest of the MM members throughout MM's history. She didn't sing that well as dazzy points out or was the best dancer but MM and H!P are more than this. I have never looked into these girls music searching for virtuosity. MM is an honest face, it is an honest smile, it is girls having fun and kind of transmitting that into you through their honest approach to music and dance and MCs. That is how I look at it. And Koha always seemed very honest and cute to me. But, the best thing in this world is that we have diversity and not everyone sees and feels the same way about everything. :)

^hmm, interesting. for me though, koharu seemed to fit in more when she first joined, but it didn't last. you're right in that she really didn't sing well, but i thought she was one of the better dancers later on in her tenure in morning musume. their style changed, but i don't think koharu fit so well with the mature image morning musume seems to have now.

When it comes to history, I prefer learning non-fictional accounts.

^lol, should i copy the sentence u want "someone" asking you? :) hihi

OR probably someone ASKING/FORCE her to change her career. with persuasion/pressure on her, she left MM. we can assume she felt not comfortable with MM from what "we" seen, but we never know what happen make her change to modeling career, money??. but surely we know she left MM peacefully and she left great memories for US. heck, such tall girl like koha and umeda have probability to be contacted by modeling agency.

personally, koha's the first musume that caught my attention... so i gues, for me, she really is something... she may not have the best voice or talent but she sure is the most genki of them all... she has the sparkling personality that made her fans like her... i'm a girl myself and i really like her... whatever the reason behind her leaving, i know koharu will go a long way, that is if her management manages her career well and as long as she has fans that believe in her... but somehow, i have this feeling that koharu may have been "left out" a little by the group... i guess so...

I have the feeling that Koha had pretty much exhausted the other girls. Maybe she was a bit too much to handle when she would go off on tangents during live events/performances/concerts. Or maybe she let her 'other persona--KKR' come out too often when it wasn't called for, making damage control a bit too much for the people behind the scenes (damage control as in PR or getting back on track, not as in cleaning up messes).

I with GEL in that she really didn't do much for me, especially in the realm of group dynamics. She never seemed like a team player. She is very pretty and who could miss her in anything that MM did (because she knew exactly where every camera was)......but as a great asset to MM.....I would have to say 'no' on that point.

Maybe it was a subconscious distancing......like, it wasn't calculated, it just happened that way on all sides.

@Glassy: You are right; she really got to improve a lot with her dancing. As a matter of fact, in the Resonant Blue concert (I think) she had some movements and clips where she would catch my attention from the rest of the girls (except when Aichan was on XD) and that was a first for me. If you look at the Kimagure Princess solo angle from Koharu, she is radiantly beautiful, sexy and mature. Hers was one of my favorites.

I finished the DVD Magazine and I sort of saw a scene that could pretty much exemplify what I have in my mind about this. The girls were holding hands, making their “all for one and one for all” ritual before the start of the concert. They were waiting for Koharu to say some final words before they started their last concert and what Koharu did was make a little scream. One of the girls said: “Really!?” like: “Is that what you are really going to say?” Koharu kept silent and serious, maybe it was because of all she had in her mind though.

@ Cardi guy:

If you are directing that to me, you are taking what I said out of context. When I said she stands out from the rest I didn’t imply that she was the best of all them, she didn’t even get to be one of my favorites. I meant, when we get to make reflections of what each of the girls in MM’s history were like and we get to point out that Nakazawa was the most in-your-face member, Yoshizawa was the first boy in MM, Kaori was at first a fight-picking (Utaban) yet going sort of space-out and sensible in her later days, etc. we could also say that Koharu was the crazy, innocent yet extremely energetic girl. Her personality is different to the rest of the MM’s members in their history, not particularly best. Who can say what is best and what is not in this subjective matters, that is just pointless.

@QuickCrusader:

That wouldn’t pretty much work like I wanted it to, so no thanks. :P

From the Summer of 2005 until Dec. of 2009, Morning Musume was enjoying it's Platinum Era.

I suppose now, now that Koharu is gone, Morning Musume has begun it's illustrious Cottage Cheese Era.

I did get the feeling that she was distant in the magazine. But I haven't finished it yet. (I do want to say I got the 'gah' vibe from Gaki. She was always the stick in the mud whenever Koharu was around..>_> At least from what I saw.)

@Cardi: Oh, you quoted dazzy. I guess that somehow in my fragile little mind I considered the possibility. ^^' XD

@MOCHU: You are completely right in what you said about Gaki. To me (sorry my dear Aichan XD) Gakisan is the true leader of MM right now. I know that Aichan does her best and she does her work but Gakisan seems so natural to give support, she even helps Aichan out when her tongue slips at concerts.

It gets a lot of emotional intelligence to notice this happening within the group. I bet that Gakisan may have noticed this happening with Koharu and the group (if it really happened) and she still looked for the way to joke with Koharu and bring her in. The problem is that when one is with friends having fun and joking around and messing around, we kind of forget about what happens outside of the group. It takes reflection, a moment to look at your side and see what is happening outside of that group to notice that there is people being left outside of the conversation. I think Gakisan has that quality of a leader to her. I have seen Aichan doing similar things with other members from MM and H!P so it is not that I want to take anything away from her.

I love Aichan, sorry Aichan. XD

perhaps someone had been whistle blowing and resulted tsunku graduating her. makes more sense as tsunku stated that koharu 'accepted' the graduation, which meant that she didnt decide to leave herself. well obviously if someone one no longer fits they go.

Wait are there any people who don't realize this? I always reckoned it was obvious.

Edit: Man, now I feel compelled to take a look at that DVD magazine volume X(

Koharu's definetely the best member of Morning Musume ever.
I also think she became very distant since the release of Shouganai. In the making ofs, she was always alone and didn't really interacted with the other girls. Maybe it's because of her solo projects, maybe it was because she was exausted of being genki all the time and wanted to be more serious and mature around Momusu (because that's the way she was since Resonant - very genki outside it, but when in the group, she always had a very serious posture).

She was never the best singer, she was too clumsy to be the best dancer as well. But at least for me, she was and always will be the best member to ever grace Hello! Project.

even with people saying she got along so well with every member before she left like the bathing example, i still find it a bit hard to believe but that's just me. anyway yeah, i think she's still close ish with the other members but they could be closer and since Koha has a blog now, we'll know more about it soon enough <3

ps
i watched some of the hp dvd magazine 31 and maybe the reason she seemed disconnected was because it was her last concert so she may have been sad.
