Afro Samurai

01 January 2007 - 09:35 AM

Taking from Wiki:

Afro Samurai is a Japanese doujinshi manga series, created by Takashi Okazaki, originally featured in the NOU NOU HAU [1] dōjin magazine, which has adapted into an 5-episode anime television series, produced by Japanese animation studio GONZO, and set to air in January 4 2007 on Spike TV.

The anime series is set to feature noted American actor Samuel L. Jackson as the voice of the titular character, as well as one of the co-producers, and will also feature Ron Perlman and Kelly Hu as character voices. Wu-Tang Clan member RZA produced the original musical score.

Each episode is estimated at costing 1 million dollars each to make, Which is also a record for gonzo.

The TV anime series will be set in a "futuristic, yet feudal Japan," and star a black samurai named Afro. The story will follow Afro as he tries to avenge his father's murder. In the world of Afro Samurai, it is said that the one who becomes No.1 will rule the world. But the only rule in this world is that only the No. 2 is allowed to fight the No. 1. The No. 2, the Afro Samurai, travels the road looking for revenge on those who murdered his father in front of him when he was just a boy. The focus of his attentions is No. 1, a three-armed gunman who is the lord of the dark swordsman's road. Silent assassins attempt to eliminate No. 2, the only man allowed to fight No. 1.

Just saw the first episode online and I gotta say it pretty much kick ass and definitely looks like it has been heavy influence by Samurai Champloo. Its too bad its only 5 episode but with a million for each episode, whoo.

Theres also supposed to be a movie coming out with Samuel L. Jackson playing Afro which going to be interesting considering the amount of action the anime has and Sam not exactly known for his fighting. Can we say really good stunt-man work?

Tarantino+Miike=Western?

21 November 2006 - 12:12 AM

http://filmick.blogs...s-time-for.html

From film ick:

I read from Screendaily that Takashi Miike has started shooting on his first ever English language film, Sukiyaki Western: Django. Of course, it is a Western and I'd bet it's a Django Western at that, be it a remake or a sequel.

And Quentin Tarantino is acting in this one - in which capacity, I don't know, but with Death Proof still needing quite a lot of post work before it's release at Easter time, I don't expect that he has a starring role.

Thank heavens.

Popping the film's title into Google gave, at time of writing, a long, long list of pages in Japanese text, so I haven't been able to do much research into it, I'm afraid. I did however find a page of what seems to be production art.

This collaboration must be very exciting for many of you reading this, so how about a cherry on top of this sweet, sweet cake? How about Miike directing a fake trailer for Grind House? Thought you'd like that.

Don't know about Tarantino acting but what the hell, its Miike baby!!!

I say bring the pain!!!!

Snakes on a Planes

19 August 2006 - 02:27 AM

Who is not going to see this film? Raise your hand.....

Stop lying to yourself right now, you know you want to see it....

I for one cannot wait to go watch this movie, its probably going to be bad but its going to be so bad its good plus it has Samuel L. Jackson being Samuel L. Jackson.

Clint Eastwood

16 August 2006 - 01:03 AM

From AICN:

One trailer...for two Clint Eastwood directed/Steven Spielberg produced World War II films...has been posted by Warner Bros' Japanese website.

The trailer encompasses THE FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS and RED SUN, BLACK SAND -- both of which will release later this year.

Paul Haggis/William Broyles Jr. scripted FLAGS (based on the book by James Bradley and Ron Powers), while Iris Yamashita wrote RED SUN based on Haggis' story.

The two movies tell the story of The Battle of Iwo Jima back in World War II; FLAGS from an American prespective and RED SUN from the Japanese perspective. This trailer suggests a size of project grander than any Eastwood undertaking I can recall (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here), as well as a decidedly un-Eastwoodian visual style (heavily diluted colors, often bordering on black and white).

BATMAN fans should note that Ken Watanabe will star in RED SUN. He was Ra's al Ghul in BATMAN BEGINS. I particularly loved his work in LAST SAMURAI -- its nice to see him getting some high-profile parts.

Why haven't I heard from about this movie till now?!? I love Clint *m-effing* Eastwood, I think his one of the best actor/director in film history, man hasn't disappointed me yet on the directorial side.

This is quite interesting concept that not only is he going to film the war from the American perspective but from the Japanese as well and its two seperate film. I don't think that hasn't been done yet and I cannot wait.

btw, Ken Watanabe was not Ras Al' Ghul, Liam Neeson was.

Oh yeah heres the trailer: THE FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS and RED SUN, BLACK SAND
