I generally swing between Musou Mode and Empire Mode. Some times I want a campaign with a bit more story, so I'll play 7 or 6. (Because I usually can't be arsed setting the PS2 up for the earlier titles.) And when I feel like playing a little more free-form or with a touch more strategy, I'll delve into Empires.
Conquest Mode proved to have not enough of either.

I might be going overboard...
I loved when each character had a story mode like DW5.
That was great and it was just 5 battles at a time - reasonable.

And things like that always annoyed me about earlier titles. I'm something of a nerd for the RoTK novel, and I imagine that inconsistencies between the Dynasty Warriors games and the story they are based on proved more irksome to me than to most.
But yeah. I can definitely see why the character-based musou is preferred by some. You play as a character you like, and it doesn't force you to play as a character type you are uncomfortable with. (Eg, I always hated playing as the Xaihou brothers) And the 5 mission-long campaign modes were much more reasonable in length, rather than sitting through a campaign of some 12 or 15 battles, many of which are fairly similar and lack the more tactical thinking which Samurai Warriors managed.

It's almost the only layer of tactical playing that the game has, to be honest. To think, "Okay. When I start I'll take that base on the left path, and then go reinforce the central supply base."
This is something I'd like to see a little more focus on in DW8. Things like making sneak attacks and ambushes easier to do and more worth your time, for a start.

To be honest the highest level I play is Normal, sometimes Easy I admint which is quite lame. I really think they shouldn't have given a choice to the audience in DW5 - now what level of difficulty they wanted. It's best to play through the game as it is, they should scrap the level of difficulty.

The difference between Easy and Normal, for example, isn't exactly subtle.

But I think most people are smart enough to turn it up pretty early on.

I never did like playing as Wei.
As for favourite characters, I'd say Zhao Yun and Bao Sanniang for Shu, and honestly can't recall who my Wu choices were.
Might have been Ling Tong or Taishi Ci.
