While I do think this corner is gross, Miki is already 20, an adult by Japanese terms, so I didn't think it was that bad. Asking 16yo Mizuki about her cup size was worse imo as well.

Two things:

 

1.  I'm shocked Miki would understand this particular meaning of "coming":  As best I can tell Miki left America when she was 10 which is typically when we Americans have our first round of sex education/figure out what sex is.  Even then, I don't think I understood the meaning of "coming" until I was about 14.

 

2.  My wife is from Korea and has lived here in the US more than double the time Miki did.  I ran this kerfuffle past her and it took some extra explaining before she understood.  Given that, I wonder how many people in the audience got it.  I certainly couldn't imagine any other members who may have been with her understanding what she said without a detailed explanation.

If it was me being asked to do it, I'd laugh and do it.

 

However, this show focus on HP to a degree, and it just isn't tasteful to have the girls do such things. It's like if someone asks you to touch your mom's boobs. Most people would be like "No way!", but come on, would really someone say "Well, boobs are part of a body, don't be a prude!". It's not the act itself that is disgusting, it's the environment or situation, place and all things considered. Mizuki and Miki shouldn't have been exposed to such things no matter if they were ok with it. They are public figures, and as many perverts that could be fans, that doesn't take away that they are idols, and in my opinion, that means having certain levels of respect concerning the viewers/listeners.

@mizukingdom1:  IMHO, it seems bizarre Miki would pick this up as a pre-pubescent kid.  A 2 month trip as a teen to the US also doesn't seem sufficient.  I formally studied German and Russian and picked up zero sexually suggestive phrases or words directly from my classwork.  I've informally studied Korean and picked up some;  mostly from living in Korea for one year.  Unless management specifically had her learn racy American English for instances like this, I'm not buying it.

 

@DiegoKashiwagi:  I have my doubts about a 10-11 year old Miki maintaining contacts from the US (though it's not impossible).  When I was Miki's age when she left the US, my school district split and about half my classmates went to a new set of schools.  Three years later when my remaining classmates were about to enter high school a bunch more peeled off to attend a private Catholic school.  For the most part I lost complete track of these people for about 20 years (thanks Facebook).  Unlike Miki going to the other side of the planet, I was separated by a 10 mile gap in the first instance and about a 3 mile gap in the later one.  Not sure if it's a kid thing, an American thing or an American kid thing, but I just don't see Miki learning raunchiness from American kids she knew at one time.

@ give me ai ai;  yes, I am nearly certain Miki did not keep in contact with American classmates and I base that on my experience in the American school systems and my kids' time in American schools (BTW, my son and daughter are about Miki's age).  We almost never maintain contact with grade school classmates when they leave.  I'm sure she made new friends but they would be Japanese kids.  There aren't a whole lot of Americans in Japan and most of them are concentrated in a few places (Okinawa, Yokosuka, a small Army base in Tokyo, etc) and I doubt Miki would have been around them much if at all.

 

As to Miki being a prude or sheltered, I'm not saying that at all.  I'm just perplexed she would have been able to gain such knowledge on this particular matter.  I almost suspect this might have been staged.

I still think there is a decent possibility that she didn’t know the meaning of “I’m cumming”
This isn’t a diss against her English, since it is plenty fine, and I’m not saying she is a prude either, but I don’t see many opportunities for her to pick up sexual slang.

First of all, like mentioned before, she left America when she was about 10 and I also didn’t even know what “cumming” meant until I was about 15. But most importantly, her teenage years and young adult life have been spent being busy with school and work. It also seems that she keeps up with piano, which is a huge workload that the average teenage kid can’t even dream of.

Almost all of her daily interactions are in Japanese. If she didn’t know the concept of orgasm or how to say it in Japanese, that would be pretty surprising. I do not see her having her many instances to have more “PG-13 or R rated” conversations in English. Even though I’ve been learning Japanese for a long time, I still sometimes surprise myself by gaps in vocabulary that everyone, including I would assume I know. For example I just had a revelation last night that I don’t know the word for “spit”, neither the noun or verb.

I can easily see the situation on the radio playing out like this:

-Corner is for girls saying mostly non-erotic words, but saying them sexily for laughs
-Someone suggests “I’m coming” thinking they’re so witty
-Sanma or whoever knows what “cumming” is and thinks this is hilarious and goes with that
-Miki sees “I’m coming” and thinks like I’m coming (to your house) or something along those lines.
-She goes along with it “I’m coming~~”

Unless Miki is spending her free time watching western porn or R rated media, or is talking with friends in English in vivid details about their sexual escapades, there is a very real chance she never came across this slang.

While I don’t think the segment is “classy”, I’m not freaking out about it, and I’m not gonna lie, it got a good laugh out of me when I heard it.
I would also prefer if she did know what it meant and was just having a laugh about it, because she might feel bad about being duped into saying something really sexual. I have flashbacks to class when some kids asked me about liking roast beef, and as a certified beef lover said yes, and the whole class laughed at me. After asking around I figured out what “roast beef” was slang for, and in retrospect in that context it should have been obvious.

I’m just salty that some random Japanese person quotes me on 2ch and says it’s naive to think that she doesn’t know what it means, when it is perfectly plausible that she doesn’t. Whatever, 2ch dude, I say you are naive for assuming that being proficient in another language means that you magically know all vocabulary and slang. Some people like Miki are too busy being a professional awesome person performer to sit around all day looking at smut online, unlike you, 2ch dude.

Whether she does or doesn't know what it means is largely irrelevant (though it also surprises me how sheltered many are willing to think she is/was, having also went to school in the region, having internet access from roughly the same age range, and also with how little stigma there actually is in Japan on the subject compared to much of the west) to the complaint that people have had about the show or Miki saying it. It wouldn't have caused a stir with the western fans if she had just said it of her own volition as a joke, or even uploaded it to her official instagram, however uncomfortable it may have made some for other reasons.

 

The issue people have is that those with a position of authority over her career and the careers of those younger than her are regularly putting them into a position where their consent is compromised and forced to do the corner (and make no mistake, this *is* what the corner has been for years) whether they enjoy it, as some admittedly do, or not, as in the case with Maa-chan. People can have whatever opinions they want on it, but even the Japanese fans who support the segment still acknowledge the corner as harassment. The whole of the current spotlight on it was just a translator doing as translators do, and informing western fans of something that their idols were doing. It's no more or less complicated than that.

 

The whole situation borders on the edge of what is probably considered acceptable discussion for the boards though, even though it specifically pertains to a member and current events surrounding her, so I suspect that much of this conversation may possibly be erased in the future considering the specific subject matter.

@ Fallacia, I disagree whether Miki's knowledge of what she said is irrelevant as it undermines the comfort/consent issue.  If Miki knew what she was saying and said it anyhow, it was at the very least a manageable event for her and she did it.  Yeah, she may have felt pressured, but it obviously wasn't a show stopper.

 

But on the consent in general for events like this, I'm not buying it.  Idols are a big enough part of Japanese culture there is no way the auditioning girls and their parents don't know what is expected.  Despite that you see girls flock to auditions for perhaps a 1/1500 chance to be chosen (numbers from the 15ki audition).  Not saying any relish the idea of being put on the spot in scenarios like this, but it sure isn't so horrible of a thing kids won't apply/their parents won't consent.
