AKB's songs are selling well because they have the popularity factor. They could essentially release any style of music and still have it sell near a million copies. The same was true for golden era Momusu.

no. its not the same with momusu golden era

its not like akb selling well because of their song
the facts is fans buy couple of AKB cd's, some buy a couple of batch's, some buy a couple of hundred's so they can many times vote for a favorite girl to make her stand on the center of the stage

that's '48 promotion

I agree, thats promoting without having to push much at all. But I dont like the idea of one of the girls not being able to be in the single. It kind of gives them the image of no girl really meaning alot to the group.
Really, if MM wants more sales, its only going to take more effort on UFA's side. The girls push so hard I feel it is rude to not give them such popularity.

Not to mention the fact that they are pretty much on every magazine, every TV show, and are ALL OVER Japan. They DO get huge amounts of promotion... because they can afford it.

What you say is also true. I wonder, if there was no senbatsu election, how much less their singles would sell. Ponytail to Shushu was the first single with the senbatsu election, right? And the single before that, Sakura no Shiori, sold about 300k...

Anyways, on the topic of promotion... I don't think Momusu is going anywhere unless they somehow catch the eye of the general public, or UFA takes a risk in promoting them. They have to think, "If I spend a larger amount of money on promotion for this group, will it be worth it? Will their popularity rise and will I make more money, or will it stay the same and it would have been a loss?"

Personally, although I don't think Momusu will ever reach Golden Era heights of popularity again, I say that if UFA DOES take the risk of promoting them very well, they can sell at least 100k~ per single again. But UFA needs to take that risk in order to do it. And it doesn't seem that they want to.

No, the first single to come with a voting ticket was Namida Surprise (2009), Ponytail was for the second election. And the singles that came after Ponytail sold MORE than Ponytail did, so the numbers don't support your theory. You can see the sales figures yourself here:
http://j-ongaku.org/wiki/AKB48

I don't get why some people here keep feeling like they need to justify Morning Musume's poor sales by making up excuses (blame the earthquake!) or knocking the sales of other groups as artificially inflated or illegitimate. There's nothing wrong with liking a group that isn't popular, but trying to convince yourself (and others) that they are more popular than they actually are is just silly.

It's the trend with every MM Single thread. Nothing new.

IMO, the best time to view such threads is:

(Click the spoilers at your own risk. If you get angry for some reason, don't forget that I've warned you.)

1) When the previews are out.

2) First week of release.

AKB weren't such good sellers right from the start, they worked hard. MoMusu also worked really hard back then to sell such high numbers as they used to. As for MM, the excitement for them has gone down but they still have supporters and their sales aren't this bad. Maybe one day AKB wil face the same problem (I don't hope it for them though, I don't hope for anybody to lose popularity).
The erathquake doesn't have much to do with the sales IMO. Maybe they could have sold a couple hundred copies more if this hasn't happened, but it's not like they would have been able to reach 50k.
We can all just speculate what could help them to sell higher again but at the end of the day it maked no difference if we wirte 10 pages full of this in every thread of a new release. We should rather keep supporting them by buying the CDs and wait for what the future brings for MM.

As someone who loves H!P and AKB equally I'm especially annoyed by this old "who is better" topic. If you think H!P is better, it is for oyu. If you think AKB is better, it is for you. It's a matter of taste.

And Melon Kinenbi were around for 10 years even though they sold poorly. So it's not like MM will eventually fall apart soon.

I do believe the earthquake had an effect. You can throw statistics at me, or try to change my mind, but it wont change my mind, not even the slightest bit.

And really, I dont think there is any reason for UFA to need MoMusu to get popular. They are in a very comfortable zone. Earning ~40-45k single sales for MM, ~20-25k sales for the other groups per single, and each group releases aroung 5 singles a year. Thats (extremely roughly) ~550k sales a year. Multiply that by the cost of a CD and that profit is amazing. Not to mention the fact that merch sales, concert tickets and other ways create HEAPS of profit for the company. They dont see the need in having Momusu sell more because theyre stinking rich anyway.

I know, it absolutely sucks and I feel the MM girls deserve alot more, and actually every single girl in H!P deserves better than that. But the truth is, until UFA starts to respect the girls and their desires, we wont see bigger numbers.

@Adehhrr: not to mention its comes from H!P only
Morning Musume <--Hello! Project <--- UFA entertainment <--Up Front Agency/UF. Group

how can they promote momusu only? they have a lot of work besides enyertainment business
AKB only promote AKB... so yeah they earn more in entertainment. they soo popular..

but UFA not only promote morning musume...
they have branch, book store, food, animal, Sports, Farm, Real Estate.. and many

just telling, momusu not in sad state now...

Theyre earning a great income, so whats the point in putting so much effort into the girls for a bit of extra money

A buisness always wants to make more money. They use to make so much more a few years ago. Cd sales have not dropped by a huge amount in the more recent years but merchandise sales are way down.

Who really knows how much money UFA is making? I doubt any of the information about their revenue/profits is public.

But I do wonder about UFA's profitability because so much of what the do looks so low-budget -- their most recent TV show is good, but it's obviously done with very little money. Until recently their website was very bare bones and they use a gmail address. They re-use a lot of outfits and sets for their PVs and so forth. Not exactly a great sign.

They really used a gmail address? Wow... Umm that IS pretty bad... Even if they've switched to their own domain now or whatever... Maybe it isn't completely laziness that's making the PVs so much less "exciting" than in the past... I'm talking about the sets here... Sure, giant kana are nice, but what about when there were huge sets with props and stuff... Maybe there is a lack of money?

I sure HOPE they're getting some good income... Because at least then, we know it's POSSIBLE to produce high quality PVs... Just get the people behind the scenes off their butts. XD But if they don't have the money for it, then that's another story.

I'm a bit skeptical about the lack of funds though... I mean, they still have concert tours with tons of lights and special effects... And it's not like the PVs are completely empty... (I'm talking just a plain old room for them to dance in, and a plain old wall to stand in front of for close up versions.) There's still some stuff... Such as, the giant kana, the cacti, and... Umm... The two floors. If that counts. XD That stuff (especially the giant kana) HAS to cost them SOMETHING...

It's hard to know, really, because as you say, it's not likely that their financial situation is something just anyone would know, or be able to easily find out.

To all the AKB48 anti-fans:

You don't have to like AKB48, I'm not asking you to and if you don't, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but at least show some RESPECT and stop whining in every thread for every artist that every single is going to sell bad because so-and-so48 group is releasing a single on the same day/week/month/year. I come to these forums because I love Momusu. and other groups both old and new under the H!P banner, but it's really disheartening and sad to read all the AKB48 trash talk. They are not to blame for the reason in MoMusu.'s declining factor (Sales were declining waaaaaaaaay before AKB was even created)- there are MANY reasons for it, a lot of which has already been discussed in many different threads. Like every artist ever, AKB48 will eventually go down in sales and decline in popularity. MoMusu. had their Golden Era, AKB is currently in their Golden Era right now. I'm just asking for others to show respect for those of us who may be fans of both groups and stop blaming AKB for all the H!P's troubles. I love AKB48 and I love Momusu.. I was there for MoMusu's Golden Era and I'm here right now for AKB's Golden Era. Through all these years I've been a fan and nothing can stop me now.

2ch Hello!Project fans do the same damn thing, only they don't even get a vote out of it. If it was such a shortcut to sales, why doesnt H!P do something similar? Do they not want money?

It is the same as the Golden Era in the sense that they'll sell well no matter what type of song they release.

And as evidenced by the pictures above this post, it's obvious H!P fans do the same thing. If a single sells 30k, do you think 30k different fans have bought it? The true figure is probably a bit over half of that.
