Okay...so I don't know WHAT prompted me to try to take this on with my awful japanese skills, but I looked so hard for a translation of Knee High Egoist's lyrics, and since I couldn't find one I decided to try it myself. This took SO LONG! The worst part is I probably wasted my time because I doubt it's even right.
(And for that matter, I didn't even
begin to consider the niceties of "translation" as such--I really have no way of measuring the feeling, connotations, "poetry," or whatever else of the song, so I just didn't even bother to consider that at all, haha.) (I might as well just admit that I've never tried to translate japanese before in my life--french, sure, but japanese? Never.
)
But just in case it isn't 100% wrong, I thought I would share my probably completely inaccurate take on Knee High Egoist! Please, anyone who actually knows the language properly, feel free to tell me exactly where I am going wrong.
(In fact, I'd love that, if someone has the time.
)
Knee High Egoist[as poorly translated by Nessy]FLUTTER FLUTTER it's important to be seen
In your own audacious pose
Any line of poetry is a temptation
Blissfully, I couldn't be more scandalized
Unless you have self confidence, you'll always hesitate
And until then LOVE IS OVER
Already we've reached the limit of "expensive"
Since it's love I know to look out for that magical point of no return*
Is a man's value really determined by his position!?
Knee high egoist
SPARKLE SPARKLE it's lipgloss that makes the moment
So just take off my boring seifuku
A shocking encounter
Is just the ulterior motive of any rendevous
You can hold it off by pretending not to notice or something
But once you do see it LOVE IS OVER
My short-ish skirt flutters up in an arc
I know the magic of zettai ryouiki**
Aren't there enough labels out there!?***

*Anyone have tips on this one? Here is the sense I'm getting: there's a limit to how much money someone will spend on you--and if you care about them, you try to make sure you don't cross it? (
matataku EKUSUPENSHIVU no kyoukai de/ai datte koerareru mahou sagashiteru) I can't tell if there is actually a weird "border crossing" metaphor going on here or if these are just the words that would normally be used to describe such a situation (if this is, indeed, the situation being described)
**I'm sure everyone here is enough of a nerd to know what this means, but just in case: "zettai ryouiki" is the area of bare leg between the bottom of the skirt and the top of the stocking
***This line gave me a lot of trouble--I'm kind of under the impression that it's supposed to be a reaction to the "labels" in the lines above ("skirt hirari" and "zettai ryouiki")--like the basic meaning of the chorus would be--"I know how to make these labels work for me, but aren't there enough already??"--but again, I just don't know the language well enough to tell...otherwise, the line (
sekai no RABERU wo atsumete mo tarinai) just doesn't really make sense to me
