Morning Musume 7-Week Countdown Challenge! Week 1 - Top 10 PVs

Posted by beyooooonk, 18 August 2014 · 467 views

Hello! As the date for Morning Musume '14's New York debut fastly approaches, I decided to do a Morning Musume 7 Week Challenge ranking different aspects of singles/releases, etc.
7 weeks seems kind of far away, but when you think about it, it's only seven Hello! Pro Station episodes until the big day... XD

Anyway, on with this week's topic!

Top 10 Favorite PVs
(the other weeks will be less boring lol)

10) Egao no Kimi wa Taiyou sa
I started off the countdown with a song that I honestly think is very bland. I always skip the song when it comes on shuffle and never hum it when I'm working. I'm pretty sure the play count is at 2 or something on iTunes... However, no matter how bad I think the song is, I love watching the PV. See PVs are "promotional videos"-- they are trying to use the appeal of the videos to get you to buy the song after watching it. I can say that that totally works. I watch the PV regularly just because the CGI is so creative, the dance shot looks so nice (I don't even like the dance either! :P) the group shots in casual clothing are natural and fun, ... I could keep going, but I'll stop here. The PV is just so enthralling and enjoyable to watch, even if I mute the volume XD

9) Memory no Seishun Hikari
I have no idea how this PV even made it on this list. The video is similar to all of the other PVs in this era of Momusu with the super fast camera motions, dark lights, angst-ridden dances, and city scenes. But something about it seems so right, compared to others like Daite! HOLD ON ME and Summer Night Town. I can't put my finger on it... I just loved it when I first saw it. The PV is even 80% Nacchi and the screentime is terrible, but I just don't care. Maybe Tsunku was right about pushing her to the front-- she adds to the video and makes it really captivating. And the street dancers are pretty funny too XD

8) Shouganai Yumeoibito
This PV has nice coloring and outfits. I love how they stepped outside of the box with the outdoor shots. The facial expressions are good too.

7) The☆Peace!
A classic. The toilet shots are so weird. In the best way ever. I don't really have much to say about it; it's not a visual masterpiece or anything but is fun to watch.

6) LOVE Machine
This PV is weird. You would think Momusu's "revolutionary" highest-selling single would have a mainstream PV like the others, but this one takes place in CGI wonderland. The effects are cheesy and the dance is hilarious. The outfits don't work, and the shots on the plane/various locations don't make sense or fit at all. And that's what I love about this PV. It's so funny and entertaining, and the girls have great expressions. It's a feel-good video as much as it's a feel-good song. It's hilariously wonderful, not to mention another classic.

5) Toki wo Koe Sora wa Koe
This video is a visual masterpiece. The CGI is flawless and creatively used. I think what makes me love this PV are the little touches-- the playing of the air instruments in the beginning, the bare feet in the dance shot, the changing of the starry background, etc. I like the normal PV more than the Promotional Ver. too. The one complaint I have (which was kind of remedied in the finished version, but maybe I'm just being nitpicky) is that I wished they used less close-up shots or were more creative with the backgrounds; I thought they were kind of boring. But the amazing shots when the girls are in the circle dancing individually make up for that. And the costumes are <3 Just a great video all around.

4) Joshi Kashimashi Monogatari

I love this video because

-it was filmed on a "train"- I love that idea
-everyone was styled nicely and looked like the character they were trying to portray
-the shots were put together well
-everyone seems like they're having a great time and the video gets you to know the girls better
-the song is long as he'll but the video leaves you wanting even more than that

3) Kare to Issho ni Omise ga Shitai!
The costumes and visual effects are cartoony and silly completely something Momusu has never done before, but is just so Momusu-like I was surprise they had never used the idea before. It probably wouldn't have worked during the platinum era (just imagine that!) When I first watched it, I though it was really trippy. Now I agree even more so. XD

2) Wagamama Ki no Mama Ai no Joke
Hnnnnnnnnngggggg.
I am in love with this music video.
No, there's no fancy set or storyline or outside shots. It's just clips of the girls on a stage, what's the big deal? Well, this video gets props for using a boring space (yet still different- I'm sick of seeing the room they always use and just cover with a tarp) and using lighting, timing, the outfits, the song, and the dance to there advantage. They're not silly hobos like in Koko ni Iruzee, they're not telling a story like in I WISH, and they're not dancing in bathrooms like in The Peace. This PV gets props for great cinematography, instead of just planting the cameras and letting the girls sell the song in the video. Everyone looks so professional, and it's the first time I looked at the current Momusu as a pretty talented era. I loooooove the black blazer/pants outfits, as well as the dance. (Riho looks so fierce with the slaps...) Actually, everyone looks fierce. The lighting is so creative and highlight the dance so well. The girls are dancing silhouettes especially in the beginning. The close-up looks great too. They picked a great spot to film too- I loved how they filmed the two different dance shots using two different perspectives- facing the audience with the red curtain in the background and then facing the red curtain with the seats in the background. ...I'm going to stop gushing now. But just note that I watch this PV like twice every week it's so amazing. Not to mention the song is the best MM A-side ever. The only downside is that the translated lyrics are terrible. I just look at the Project! Hello version- their translation makes more sense.

1) Mr. Moonlight ~Ai no Big Band~
To avoid getting carried away like the last video, I'm going to keep this short. I think you can watch the video and understand what I'm trying to say even without saying that much. So, why did I give this the #1 Ranking? Because...

-the video idea is completely different from anything they had released and will release
-the costumes were perfect for the story they were trying to tell
-the props were perfect
(the mics, the clouds they sang on, etc)
-the song itself and lyrics were perfect
-THE BIG BAND IN THE BACKGROUNG OMG
-everyone was styled so nicely, especially the main three
-the colors look great
-it tells a story
-YOSSIE
-it's perfect and gives you this warm fuzzy feeling inside

Thanks for reading! Next week I will rank the best costumes!

The CGI from the '90's were pretty goofy XD At least it looks decent. Haha that's why I love the MV for it.

And I love one of your reasons for Mr. Moonlight being #1 - YOSSIE is such a good reason XD it's mine too!

This is a nice way to pass the time before the girls come to New York :)

Thank you for commenting!  LOVE Machine makes me laugh.  I think it added to the virality of it though.

Yossie is always a reason to vote a PV as #1.

I wish you could go to NY.  :( I kinda wanted to meet you.  You're really nice!
