Vulfpeck - Fugue State from Fugue State

4 piece band featuring a simple drum set, a Wurlitzer, bass guitar, and electric guitar, nothing really too fancy. The awesomeness lies in the instrumental work (yep this is a non-vocal piece). The name actually captures part of the wonders of the song, there are examples of counterpoint and stretto all over the place, which ironically clashes with the jazz/funk improv nature of the song (yes this is a hipster band - no I don't consider myself hipster, but I do appreciate good skill). I do like the clash with the presentation, using modern instruments and ornamentation styles with what would be considered classical style song theory, from the fugue elements drawn in to the organization of the entire piece. Finally, I think there's something to be said about the combination of the actual interwoven classical/modern musical themes and avenues and the title, defined as reversible amnesia pertaining to personal identity: though all music comes from somewhere and along the way, may detour a bit, it still comes back around. That bit of philosophy is fitting for both this song, and for music overall I think, but that's just me talking. it's great easy listening, but that's my two cents - go out there and give it a shot.
