Already mentioned by others in this thread are the themes of "The Magnificent Seven" (1960) and "Saw" (2003), two more honorable mentions...

And one more honorable mention from television...

"Hawaii Five-O" (1968-1980) theme

"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is always worth a shout... not only the Main Theme but classic stuff like The Ecstasy of Gold

Stargate - which is from the movie, and then leant itself to the SG1 series quite well.

From TV:
Dr. Who - many versions, although this is my favourite (nostalgic).
Blake's 7
Twin Peaks (class stuff, this!)
Nananananananananananananananana... BATMAN!!
DISCLAIMER: Please bear in mind that with regard TakaH!Otty... I am biased. Very biased indeed (although I personally think it's not bias but merely a matter of quality). So please take anything I write with regard to her near limitless ability, talent, looks, appeal, charm, perfection, blah blah, with a pinch of salt the size of the moon. If you take it too seriously, I can not be held accountable for your over-reaction. ;)

Among soundtrack music that isn't a theme proper, nothing can top:

The Love Theme from "The Godfather" (1972)

It makes you feel like part of the family. :P

The theme songs of Red Cliff by alan.

They're both among the most epic songs I have ever heard... and I'm not even being biased. The songs are beautiful and alan's voice is perfect (as usual) during both songs.

I'll post the Japanese versions because they are on avex's channel and are good quality as opposed to the low-quality ones elsewhere on YouTube.

Xīn.Zhàn ~RED CLIFF~ / RED CLIFF ~Shin.Sen~
Sadly, avex does not have the full version of this... which includes her Tibetan wail during the bridge.

Chì Bì ~Dà Jiāng Dōng Qù~ / Kuon no Kawa

They have the full version of Kuon no Kawa! <3 Including her amazing Tibetan wail <3

^ i love alan too! i even bought red cliff strictly because of her. (it ended up being an amazing movie. was part 2 released yet?) and her Tibetan wail gives me absolute chills. i'd never heard of it before listening to her music.

^ I think Part 2 was released.

I haven't seen the movie. Before it came out, my brother was obsessing over it and always talking about how excited he was for it, and he of course bought it when it came out.

Around the same time, I discovered alan after reading a review of Ashita e no Sanka, and the review and the mention of her "Tibetan wail" really interested me, so I listened and was absolutely blown away!

I saw how one of her songs had Red Cliff in the title and immediately thought of the movie, and was surprised to learn it was the theme song for Part I. I thought the timing was hilarious, and my brother isn't really interested in anything Asian except for Chinese history, so I thought it was funny how our two interests became tied in a way.

Red Cliff 1+2 are superb movies...
Definitely worth getting in Blu-Ray: HERE and surprisingly cheap.

Music ain't too shabby, either! :D

How could I have overlooked the greatest movie theme ever... in my defense, it is from a film I had never heard of, "Requiem for a Dream" (2000):

^ "Lux Aeterna" was set brilliantly to a tribute to a hardcore wrestler named Nick Mondo. It really fits well with the semi-tragic but heroic grandeur of the risks he took and the extremes he went to, but I digress...

Does anyone have any other recommendations... I made my list from the themes of famous American films, often from Hollywood's golden era, but perhaps there are some great themes I haven't heard, because I've seen very few recent films and I know next to nothing about non-American movies.

eeyore: i haven't had the money to buy a blu ray player. but now that i have a new (and better paying) job, i'll definitely get one.

^ imo, the kill bill 2 soundtrack is the best. it has a very eclectic collection of songs. my favorite being "about her" by malcom mclaren

E: kill bill 1 is equally as awesome.

^ It was used for many other things later, but it originated with a gloomy drama called "Requiem for a Dream" (2000).

This isn't a movie theme, but I love the oldest Dr Who theme. It's so haunting and so interesting since it was made BEFORE synthesizers.

It wasn't. Synths came about in the 50's and Doctor Who came out in the 60's. Though this theme was done before they'd started putting out proper commercial synthersizers and they had to do things the old analogue way. Intererestingly enough i find that the groups which were experimenting with analogue ways of creating synthersized music made far more creative and interesting sounds than a lot later did when there were a wide range of synths available.
