I'm pleasantly surprised by Homare because she's been over the top humble in her interviews re: her skills and she's otherwise been presented as a dancer. Very nice voice. On pitch, good sense of rhythm, and so so cute. I guess it's not so surprising with her industry experience, as I'd assume she's probably been given vocal lessons before as well. Rio meanwhile has one of those natural power voices that you know is going to be great with a year or two of professional training.

As others have been saying, I was surprised by Homare. I kind of expected her to be an awful singer, but her voice is actually pretty pleasant and on pitch. It's a little "thin", but I bet she improves quickly. Her voice reminds me a little bit of Kamei Eri's when she first joined.
Rio clearly has great potential and a very nice voice naturally, though it sounds like nerves can get to her. That'll become better with time and working on breath support.
We already know Mei can sing well, so overall, there are no "trainwrecks" in this generation at all. By that I mean like Sayumi or Ogata Haruna; girls who first come in at an extremely low level and sort of stand out in a bad way in performances, though they will improve over time.
Also, this cant help but make me curious about those other four blurred out girls. Wonder if any of them will be joining as KSS.

I was also wondering about the blurred out girls. Honestly, I am kind of glad that we DIDN'T get to see all those girls audition. I always hated when I watched an audition, got attached to a couple girls and then had those girls NOT get chosen. Like Sato Sumire: I LOVED her, but she didn't get chosen, then she kind of languished when she was in AKB.
Overall though, I'm quite pleased with this gen. I was so pleasantly surprised to see that none of them were completely tone deaf.

^ I think her aspiring to take over Sakura's Help me solo along with the she's-a-good-singer-hype led people to believe she's gonna be as high level from the get-go as Sakura was.
To be fair, when Sakura auditioned for S/mileage she had a completely different singing voice (though hints of her current voice peaked through). It was nasal as all get out. I'm not sure if she was just trying to imitate how Yuuka sounded sometimes, or if that was her actual singing voice, but it's clear that after being in Eggs her singing quality improved leaps and bounds. My bet is that management is pushing Rio as the "singer" because they heard the same kind of potential Sakura had. Homare, while good at hitting notes and rhythm, is clearly the sharper dancer. And we already somewhat know Mei. Management tried to give each girl a unique spin, is all. And something shocking like "I want to take OdaSaku's part" is shocking, like when Riho claimed she wanted to be leader right after joining. It's buzz, ya know?
In a year or two, I'm predicting this will be the strongest gen we've seen in a while. They all have good singing foundations, the dancing skills always improve with time, and at least two of them have shown personality (I'm betting Homare opens up over time).

Rio is what I've been waiting for vocally but Homare was a nice surprise. Her voice is nice to the ears and something different for current Momusu.
I didn't find her dancing anything special. Some sharp moves here and there but I felt she looked like a new KSS. She shows a lot more confidence than Rio there but to be fair to both they didn't show something like with Only3.

That had been my take so far as well. A good singer by base H!P standards only really tempers my expectation towards the better half of the KSS, so there's always some room to surprise me. Homare was the mystery though since anyone being pushed as a dancer could fall anywhere in the range of vocal ability. From what I've seen, both have the potential to end up among the best singers in H!P if given the opportunity, even if only Rio is being pushed for her vocal ability right now.
I've noticed a few people now though that first hadn't realized how skilled Mei actually is because they had only seen the Harosute edit of her test performance. Right now with Rio being pushed as the singer and Homare being pushed as the dancer, it almost seems like by default they've been pointing to Mei for personality because of her panda obsession and elementary English ability. I'm kind of glad for it though, because it gives Rio and Homare a chance to gain fans for their own abilities. At present, I feel like if the full range of Mei's abilities had been more visible from the start, it may have overshadowed the potential that her gen-mates are showing or maybe even given a more negative impression for some after hyping them for their singing or dancing abilities. Rio in particular already shows great singing potential, and with minimal stamina improvements (assuming it wasn't just nerves) should be able to consistently give a better vocal performance than Mei. I just think that they're all on a much more even footing than the management hype would suggest and we'll have a lot to look forward to in seeing how they all improve over the next couple of years.

Basically, these 15th gen members are another Miyo/Honoka/Utano combo, or should I say: balance/singing/dancing trio. You can tell that Rio emphasizes in singing, Homare emphasizes in dancing, while Mei is in between.

People disappointed in Rio really should take a step back and think about how nerve wracking an audition can be for people that have no experience whatsoever in the industry. I'm a singer myself and I can 100 % assure you that my vocal ability is incredibly affected by nervousness. Some people aren't really affected, but others may be way more sensitive (anxiety etc...) It is also insanely hard to sing and dance at the same time. Even though I'm classically trained, my stamina is not up to par so I really could not deliver a strong performance while moving my body like they do.
I believe that with proper training, she'll be great. She already has a nice natural vibrato to her voice that is not incredibly irritating. She also seems to have somewhat of a wide range and we're missing singers that can hit those high notes (sorry to Mizuki fans but I don't like her delivery on high notes).Tbh, I didn't find Sakura that impressive at first, even with KSS training. She grew really quickly and developed her own voice in a short amount of time.
Hyping her as a singer is a good move since it means she's more likely to get lines; leading to faster improvement
PS: Homare's voice was incredibly cute. I'm smitten

She was clearly quite nervous. Nervousness causes loss of normal breath control, voice getting shaky, mind blanking out... she exhibited all of that, which is where I think most of the aforementioned people got disappointed. I feel she's in a very good starting place, and it will only be improved with actual voice lessons and better breath control. And based on her blog, she's really is working hard to do her best and improve where she's lacking.
I just read that she had tonsilitis before the final judging so it must've been hard for her, thinking about her health and all while performing the tests. Honestly not let down, too, because this is the Rio I expected from the time she was hyped as a good singer -- a Musume with a great singing potential.
Her blogs are quite amusing too, breaking that 'wall' between fans and idols by publicly acknowledging criticisms and responding to them. That's something we seldom see in H!P.
I've said this in a comment, and I'll repeat it: This gen are composed of girls who are diamonds in the rough, and I hope they will really shine soon. Can't wait for the fall tour!

I wonder how much of a coincidence it was that in the last group dance of the audition that both Rio and Homare were the two together in the front of the formation during their dance instruction with the others who were still blurred.
