Matsuura Aya's 'Don't Kill Yourself': Part 3

Before you ask, I'll explain parts 1 and 2 here before getting to the main feature which is part 3 but first, some prologue... Matsuura Aya is perhaps the model for the youth of Japan: sweet, pretty, hard working and cheerful, amongst other qualities. This year she's once again at the forefront of the anti-drugs campaign, making her obligatory appearance with Abe Shinzo (although I still much prefer Koizumi Junichirou) and having her flawless face untainted by drug abuse adorned on posters. Interestingly, alcohol isn't the focus of any campaign and although I don't have figures, I'm sure that Japan has trouble with alcoholics, under-age and binge drinkers. Perhaps it's not quite as big an issue. Regardless, this is about Aya's quest to clean up the Japan and about a song which would have been perfect for スケバン刑事 コードネーム=麻宮サキ last year this is "Matsuura Aya's 'Don't Kill Yourself': Part 3".

"Matsuura Aya's 'Don't Kill Yourself': Part 1" is the movie I mentioned a second ago, henceforth called スケ刑事. In between all the yo-yo ass-kicking, bombs and S&M gear slick battle suits there was a message in the movie trying to get out. I think it got out but I don't believe many people saw the movie like I did: as an anti-bullying campaign (what the original purpose of Verona website was). Quite obvious really. Bullying is a serious issue in Japan but it's a hush-hush taboo. So much so that schools do actual deny it happens despite evidence as in the movie. Because of this, the victims can be pushed to extremes and late last year there was an extremely high profile news case of a victim who wrote a letter urging the government to act or else he would kill himself! The sad reality is that there often isn't the threat: they children just end up having enough one day and end it the only way they can. Above all, the idea of スケ刑事 was to try and urge those school kids who had been pushed to the brink to not give up and commit suicide. Hence the very obvious Romeo & Juliet references throughout (Romeo & Juliet obviously and Verona). ! The outcome of the Romeo & Juliet in スケ刑事 in contrast to Shakespeare's should be clue enough. And I mean the original Romeo & Juliet: Tae and the other girl - shame on me for forgetting her name! Kotomi: I just skipped through to find her name.
:D I mean those Tae and Kotomi rather than Tae and Jirou, the hijacked Romeo. Yeah, apart from that, it's probably not a particularly good movie unless you're a fan. I think I'd probably lambast it if I wasn't a fan and didn't see the message so unless you take it to heart it's better to watch Battle Royale instead (same director). ;)

So everyone knew about part 1 but what about part 2? Well that came on October 15th in a 70 minute package called 命の奇跡, a special drama to celebrate 50 years of CBC TV. In it, Aya plays a terminally ill girl (Hirai Yoshimi RIP - it's based on a true story) and in the second half of the drama she comes across a depressed and suicidal classmate (Matsumoto Kana). Interestingly, Kana wasn't the victim of bullying but a rather uncertain domestic life which sort of widens the scope of "Matsuura Aya's 'Don't Kill Yourself'" away from simply bullied school kids. And part 3 is a song? Yes. An image song for a news show which is a first to me. I thought image songs were reserved for anime and occasionally dramas but that shows how much I know. So the song: 「笑顔」 aka 「松浦亜弥の『自殺しないで』・3回目」. Prior notice that some lines have been translated in pairs because it makes more sense to do it that way.

Analysis

I don't have as much to say about the lyrics this song compared with some others I've translated. I suppose it's worth noting that the song is very anti-suicide which I guess is probably very obvious given what the rest of the entry is about and from the lyrics. Tanimura cited wanting to see sad and painful bad news events such as bullying and suicide disappear as the influence of the song (N24 website paragraph 3). The purpose of the song (paragraph 4) is to give those who need it a friendly push in the right direction. That furthers the ambit of "Matsuura Aya's 'Don't Kill Yourself'" even more, to take it outside the school grounds and into Japanese society. Heck, with the frequency of that type of news around the world it's sort of crying for it

As the song progresses, the optimism grows. Everything before the first chorus is extremely negative but after it things start looking up and the never-ending journey isn't quite so bleak. The clouds have silver linings. In the chorus itself, 負けないで (makenaide) really means "don't lose" and it would probably be more accurate to translate it as "don't succumb" but "don't give up" has more of the feel of the line as a translation. I have to admit that I find the verse after the second chorus (the part ending そのまま・・・) a little out of place because the rest of the song is about outside influences pulling you to the brink while that part has a Christina Aguilera "Beautiful"-accept-yourself-for-who-you-are feel to it. Nevertheless, the same message is in place as the rest of the song.

Not much else to say really. Um... Aya's favourite line is 生きてさえいれば 報われる (the reward one). Out of the 生きてさえいれば lines that one is definitely the most inspiring of the four although they're all pretty strong. I feel that I have to agree with her because even though I really like ひとりじゃないから (the way she sings it and the meaning because it has a distinct "You'll Never Walk Alone" feel to it, albeit a less depressing-sounding song) it just doesn't carry the same message if it's taken out of the song. 生きてさえいれば 報われる really holds onto its meaning with or without the rest of the song.

Musical Style

Musically, the instruments are very clean and simple for the most part (the guitar solo is the exception). The piano has a great sound; that sort of delicate tinny studio piano sound that was also used in Aya's ひとり on Naked Songs (my translation here). Apart from the piano, drums, bass and electric guitar that were part of the studio recording, there was also an accompaniment backing track there's also a xylophone and some strings... Sounds like the standard string quartet (viola, first and second violins and cello) to me. All the instruments are played softly with a delicate touch. The overall feel for the song is quite bright and mostly what you'd expect from an optimistic ballad until the guitar solo. Guitar solos are just interludes but the sound of this one is a build up to the optimism of the final chorus.

Singing Style

I think this is the second hardest song Aya has had to sing this year. The #1 spot goes hands down to イチャ♡イチャ Summer from GAM's album which is has elements that are both at the top and the bottom of her singing range. 笑顔 steps up a few tones in pitch from her normal but there's none of the difficulty of moving low to very high harmony notes. That said, it's still a difficult song because again, it's high up in her range, right on the border at times. Singing like that is like trying to stand on tiptoes; you can probably do it but you won't be able to sustain it for long unless you're very strong and balanced. And then that's only trying to sustain a high note. When you start trying to piece together a few notes the challenge becomes that of walking on tiptoes and many people will fall flat on their face trying. Although Aya's vocally strong and dancing around my metaphorical room like Pavlova (the Russian ballet dancer, not the meringue named after her), I'd hate to see what it's doing to her vocal chords!

I'm sure a few people have watched the news clip on the tracker. I can't truly say that Tanimura Yumi's voice isn't good but it doesn't really have the penetrative depth to get the song across. She's not flat, just not powerful. It's too enunciated like she's in an elocution lesson à la Eliza Doolittle. Her voice is floaty, sort of halfway to enka but not there. Also, have people seen Miki's Amazing Grace practice from 娘DOKYU! last year? The same thing applies to 万波麻紀 (Mannami Maki) who was teaching Miki. :D But this isn't really a harsh criticism of Tanimura Yumi's voice because she herself acknowledges the quality of Aya's.

Interesting thing I noticed a while ago about Aya's singing performances, not just this one. When there's a jump in the pitch of a line she'll hold a finger out (usually her right index as that's the natural pointing finger and Hello! Project girls are trained to hold the microphone in their left hand for choreography purposes) and sort of tap the air once as if she's plucking the note out of the air! x_x In 笑顔 the main line she does it on is the last chorus line ひとりじゃないから. She moves her hand/arm about a lot and bobs about while she's performing anyway but she especially picks out the notes. I really like that though. She doesn't so much as dance as flow with the song which shows you how much she really gets into her singing.

Additional Thoughts

So far I've only read one blog about the song and I don't think I'll read any more. Well, actually two if you count Tanimura Yumi's blog but it was only about 5 lines with the general message of "take a look"! x_x The author of that first blog didn't say anything I disagreed with... the song is good but Hello! Project's role is supposed to be keeping people at the happy end of the happiness ladder happy rather than Samaritans duty (they're called Befrienders outside the UK). Also from the standpoint of most of her fans, she needs something that will sell rather than a good song. That means, beg, borrow or steal, another 気がつけば あなた which is fair enough. I can see where she's (I think she's a she) coming from even though I absolutely love what Aya's been doing. I'd gladly welcome another 気がつけば あなた, but not any more or any less than I'd welcome another ballad. Just as well for me really because "most of the fans" aren't going to get what they want by the looks of things. Aya's next tour is scheduled to start in mid-October and since 進化の季節・・・ she's had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... 6 new songs, or at least will have by the time it comes. Of those, only Rock My Body can be considered even close to what the ヲタ really want (the blogger above is self-confessed) but even then it's still a radical step away. Because of that, whatever the Autumn tour is called, I'm pretty sure it's going to be more of what she was doing last year. Bring it on. And I don't think Miki has been scheduled for anything there yet so I expect at least one GAM number in at least one concert as in 進化の季節・・・.

An interesting point related to this is that on Doki Miki Night 07-04-09 when Aya was a guest, they were asked what they do to cheer themselves up. Rather unexpectedly they both said that they'd be more likely to wallow in misery than fight against it! :) Best we ignore that, right? That's the root of depression because it could snowball. However, while I'm not saying they were being untruthful, I can't see how either would allow the other to do that even if they wanted to. Anyway, how do I remember something as oblique as that? It was my mail! :P

So my conclusion... it seems as if the profits should go somewhere charitable like Befrienders which I mentioned earlier but then again I'm not too concerned if the money goes into the pockets of those involved. Shows how deep my morality goes! :P But at the end of the day, I'm not someone who feels good about myself when I give money to charity or something and I don't really do anything significant to help. I'm just going to enjoy the song for what it is and there was some sort of message that I was meant to help get across... Oh, that was it! x_x

In a more serious tone, I think that bullying has always been a major problem in Japan. I won't deny liking the comedic Kansai act (突っ込み and 惚け), but we all know that digging into someone constantly causes them to feel unwanted, horrible, and possibly even annoyed! I wonder if the Japanese get a little carried away with the act? Not to mention, there's the burden of fitting into society that constantly surrounds every age.

The song sounds wonderful! Thanks for the translation and short analysis! I guess the message is pretty clear.
