It's a parody of the reasons some members of mm were booted, yes. Yaguchi with the pachinko /bf and kago for smoking.

I admire this. This is her way of telling the world that she will not conform to the expectations placed on idols to be "dolls" who never offend anyone's sensibilities. I would have done exactly the same thing... except I would have held up two fingers, Eminem-style, to express what I thought of my critics. XD

I think Oikaze's right; which makes me think.... first, Kago took not-so-subtle jabs at the idol industry with her PB's and interviews, and now Goto's doing the same with her photoshoots.... gosh, is the idol world THAT repressive?? I'm starting to be scared of being an idol fan

This pic has nothing to do with being an idol at all, the only way it can be associated with an idol is that Maki was once idol an long time ago. She's not dressed in idol clothes or wearing idol accesories. Looks to me its just a photo where they put Maki in a pachinko bar and gave her a cigarette.

I don't think there is anything wrong I mean people don't bash at any other artist for smoking, but Maki gets bash on for being a past idol. She all grown up people get it though your head. It isn't an anti idol statement it's just a mature picture and it's probably more the agency's fault than hers.

Legal and she's not an idol anymore.. WOW THERE IS SO MUCH WRONG HERE -.-
Glassey, I don't think it works that way lol An idol is a virgin and is active in a lot of medias. She's done from that. She's a sexy female singer now lol

goto maki was never an idol, not even when she was in hello project. she was a pop singer, there is a huge difference between pop singers and idols. this is typical behivor for pop singers.

^ especially since she even got her boob job while she was still in H!P. I guess in her case, she might have been an idol but she was about to cross that very thin line xD But now, yes, she is indeed a pop singer.

I don't care who does, it I will NEVER like smoking. And I will disapprove of it when ANYONE does it. I don't see how this is "awesome". I don't see how there is anything positive about smoking in general.

She's going to destroy her beautiful voice. >_<

^ I don't think anyone is saying that it's awesome she's smoking, more like she's awesome for doing what she wants without caring. there's a lot of things that are legal like this and alcohol that is very bad for you, but it doesn't mean that it isn't legal, unfortunately, and she's an adult. So, that's awesome that you, and I, and a lot of others don't, but if this isn't just a "stunt" type pic from Gocchin, she does, and no one can force her not to xD

Idol, singer, entertainer, whatever, I think anyone who smokes needs to get their head checked. It's bad for you. It's bad for people around you. I seriously hope she stops.

i just scroll up till down and see...
"famous" kills true opinion.

if Gocchin smoking = "awesome"
if your friend smoking = f*** him! ??

if two girl kissing (idol/artist) = we call cute.
if two person kissing out there = we call them lesbian.

funny right? ... lol.
war ...war never changes

ps/: i just wake up!!! hihi everyone.

lina-chan: isn't an idol a person of many talents? she's acted, of course sang, done comedy (haromoni theatre) if that's what an idol is, then i'd definitely say she was an idol. and i don't know if the meaning "virgin" in the statement means she's not ever bumped uglies, or virgin meaning she's kept on a tight leash, only doing what the agency says she can do, never really quite let loose.
and besides, i honestly don't think the picture is of her ACTUALLY smoking, it's probably a fake cigarette, or if it's real, she put it in her mouth, posed for the picture, then threw it away.

QuickCrusader : To me, "awesome" refers to the provocation directed to the idol's industry and their strict rules, and not to the fact that she is smoking. From what I understood, she makes a reference about the pictures of various idols smoking, including herself back then, that were causing scandals in magazines and ended the career of some. If that's what she did, then it's a confrontation. A statement that agencies should let the girls live their own lives and make their own choice beside their career as idols. I think she's right, and that's what I think is awesome.

And, lol, two girls kissing, if their doing so because they are attracted to one another, are called lesbians or bisexual. The word is not supposed to be an insult, it is only a sexual orientation, and if anyone as a problem with homosexuality at all, he or she should not workship their favorites idols kissing each other because yes, then it's a double standard. And, frankly, one should have no problem with homosexuality at all.

If anyone finds the idol industry repressive then they should not support it period. Because the very mentality that created idols is the same mentality that created all the parts of idol culture that you don't like. They came from the same egg and that should only make sense. To not acknowledge this is to be uninformed or manipulative. You like kawai, nice behavior, polite people, young idols willing to perform for adults, etc. - all products of the same strict orderly society that celebrates tradition, respect, especially respect for men, a quality most guys seem to forget lest they look unprogressive.

Idol culture is the most repressive to girls who shouldn't have been idols in the first place. There are guys who can't stand serving in the military and guys who like it. Speaking of strict and repressive, either you admire so called tiger moms because you like the results or you don't.

America's loose freedom loving culture spawned rock and hip hop as well as a more demonstrative, aggressive society that would never tolerate wotas or Japan style idols. You can't invent rock or hip hop without the free society that also created more violent people – they all came from the same egg. I don't expect people who love rock or hip hop to criticize America's more aggressive society but I do expect people who hate aggressive music and hip hop culture to criticize America's violence. People always want to pick and choose what they like about another culture but everything is intertwined whether you want to acknowledge that or not.

Maki is spoofing the tabloid photo of herself smoking and playing pachinko, big deal. She's been photographed hanging out with Tsunku and the Dream Musume bunch, was she also at Ai’s grad concert? Not exactly trying to distance herself from HP is she. Probably took 5 minutes to conceive and shoot this smoking photo. Looks like a retro photo from the 60's when celebrities in the West were photographed smoking because it made them look cool, stylish, rebellious. I'll bet they shot the photo more for the cool look than any serious statement. They probably also thought it was kind of a funny idea. I believe this because her HP career ended so long ago why would it still be a big deal. The fact that she’s hanging out at Dream MM concerts tells me she’s cool with her past. In America with our strong anti smoking culture that smoking photo would be considered irresponsible and a calculated act but in Japan or especially Europe probably not a big deal.

To say that Aibon shot that one racy photo book as a serious artistic statement about idol culture is like saying former teen celebrities are making serious statements by posing nude in Playboy. There was a time back in the 90's when the heroin trash aesthetic of Aibon's photo book would have been considered interesting or at least in fashion but now it's old news, just exploiting another dysfunctional former teen idol who needed money and attention. Rebel? Well yeah but more like part of her Britney Spears slowly coming undone routine and we know it because she tried to commit suicide. Christine Aguilera and the other Disney teen girl idols seem like they are all driven to get dirty in their post Disney careers. They were all under pressure.

Meh, don't see what all the fuss is about. She might be an idol but she's also a free person and smoking at her age is not illegal in Japan, so who cares.

Funny how its currently cool in society to dislike smoking but cool to like alcohol. I don't see all these aggressive comments whenever a picture of Yaguchi Mari or Yuko Nakazawa drinking a beer is shown. Alcohol kills, smoking kills. Sometimes alcohol doesn't kill and sometimes smoking doesn't kill. Sometimes eating too much kills you, sometimes being too stressed or too inactive kills you. Etc.
I'm not trying to undermine the effects fo smoking or anything, but basically IMO its a free world, and whatever we do we will affect those around us regardless (for better or for worse), so just deal with it. I don't lead a perfect life and so i'm not about to pass judgement on someone else's imperfection.

Honestly i'm more concerned at a few of H!P's young girls who look positively anoerexic/v.underweight but when pictures of them are shown instead everyone cooes & ahhhs over their cute faces. Eating disorders causing obesity & annorexia etc are the biggest rising health woe right now, but meh, whatever, lets just all get on the "smoking is the cause of all of societys woes etc" bandwagon and make ourselves feel a little smugger/self-rightious for doing so.
Or we could all just respect Goto Maki as an adult and quite rightfully admire her great accomplishments & beauty :) .

I would like to weigh in on this issue, too. Not that my opinion is in any way important, but I do think that, all things considered, in this particular instance, slightly unusual as it may be, the main question is not a matter of 'what', but rather, as I prefer to see it, about a more subtle issue that involves, among other things, which for rather obvious reasons it will be prudent to refrain from touching upon here, as it could really not be of any concern to those among you, who have so far been quite actively discussing the topic at hand, the importance and significance of which can surely not be overstated, given the context in which this matter has evolved so far, even though, I have to say, all parties here would probably agree with me that to really get to the bottom of all this, one must not look at the aforementioned aspects, but rather at the general picture which unfolds as one considers the broader implication of the argument that has been made by some, who, as I understand it (and please correct me if I am wrong), classify the concerns raised not as a point against but rather for the thesis that I am about to treat thoroughly and carefully to fully make you understand that which might escape the lesser mind, even though I am not disposed to maintain that any of the commenters here, or any user on this website for that matter, belong to said group and even if they did, which, given the circumstances that brought about this interesting and most likely very fruitful discussion we are having here, should not be a source of pity or contempt, which are also perfect indicators -- and this is really quite important -- for the ever so slightly changing dynamic that such discourse tends to introduce to the subject matter, which one must really consider with a mind more contemplative than that of the average and maybe slightly intransigent attitude that is so common among the people today who have trouble adjusting the moral decision making process to their ever so busy and probably also stressful lives and this problem is certainly being shared by most if not all those who try and sometimes, even though this has hardly any bearing on the scale we are considering, succeed in doing so in the most spectacular way imaginable, the end of which might itself not be entirely controversial given all the new things that were brought into the field in the last few years, in which, as coincidence would have it, there was also a considerable amount of pressure to move away from the traditional and often criticized views that so many of todays citizens consider a mere burden with regard to the way people shape the underlying process of it and even more importantly the product that might not have come into existence, was it not for the tremendous effect of the recent changes made to the way we do things and the way things evolve in this ever so dynamic environment we have grown so accustomed to, even though it is hardly understandable why we let others, and by that I mean all the rest of the world, influence our very own and private pace, which, as some would have it, is an entitlement that is ours since the very beginning of our lives and one might reasonably argue that, if it wasn't for the way we treat this privilege, there would be no option for the lesser gifted who so decidedly guided the later stages of the whole process to a final and triumphant end, that we have so long been waiting for, I know that you have, although you are probably wondering how all of this is relevant to the topic at hand which, I believe I have, through my logical and conclusive arguments, pretty much explained even to the less attentive among you, who might only have followed this discussion casually -- there's no shame in this -- and who might, at the beginning, have been inclined to disagree with the very premise which brought about said argument and which questions the very truth of the things that I have already proven in my usual, fantastically concise way, which nobody I know could imitate even if they tried and I know that you are probably impressed by my ability to explain all this in such a clear and easy to understand exposition and you also probably wonder about that last point which so far I have avoided to address simply because I have decided to put it at the very end of my essay as it is undeniably the most important of all and deserves a much more detailed treatment that any of the above reasoning could possibly provide even to the least interested reader whom I also do not want to exclude, because I think that such matters are of interest to all who strive to be more than just the simple-minded and dull, who populate some parts of the internet, and who dare not step into the intricate and convoluted questions that determine the very fate and future of generations to come and of our own children who will probably also ask all these questions that I have raised so far in this comment and to which one should have an answer ready, in order to be what is expected of us, and I am sure that my elucidations will help clear all the misconceptions that I have seen in some of the post here, which were really not only the fault of the authors themselves but also of the circumstances by which these ideas were confronted by the other commenters here who, I am sure, will now be much more enlightened after reading this very excellent post of mine and who are in no way obliged to thank me in any way, although they may do so if they wish; and with this I will now conclude this piece. Thank you for taking the time to read all this.
