Sypnosis from Wikipedia: Attack on Titan (Japanese: 進撃の巨人 Hepburn: Shingeki no Kyojin, lit. "Attacking Titan") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. The series began in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on September 9, 2009, and has been collected into 21 tankōbon volumes as of December 2016. It is set in a world where humanity lives in cities surrounded by enormous walls; a defense against the Titans, gigantic humanoids that eat humans seemingly without reason. The story initially centers on Eren Yeager, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and childhood friend Armin Arlert, who join the military to fight the Titans after their home town is invaded and Eren's mother is eaten. However, as the story progresses and the truths about the Titans are slowly revealed to the reader, the narrative shifts to encompass Historia Reiss, squad leader Levi, Eren's father Grisha, and other supporting characters.

 

Season 2 just started a while ago and as someone who hasn't read the manga I'm quite shook after each episode. (I don't want to read the manga until the anime is airing because I enjoy being shooketh)

 

The newest episode (031 - Warrior) really came as a surprise for me.

I would have never guess Reiner and Berthold are the Armored Titan and the Colossal Titan respectively. Now that I watch the ending I realize the 3 children that are eating human organs surrounded by some kind of priests are probably Annie, Reiner and Berthold. 

I wonder what their "hometown" as they mention is.

And where the heck did the beast titan disappear after crossing the wall and who was he???

I can't understand how people still don't read the manga when the first episode of the first season aired, i literally flew to read the rest of the manga lol

^rather than people still not reading the manga, i'm surprised that anyone who is watching SNK did not get spoiled on who the colossal and armored titans were before it was revealed on saturday. I remember watching the first season, and when the manga announced who the CT and AT were, someone immediately spoiled it for me on tumblr so i just went " f*ck it :'))))))))))" and started reading the manga lmao 

 

i'm up to date on both the anime and manga, but i just have to say how impressed i was with the animation of episode 5 and 6.

I suggest this thread to be anime only! I guess we can put manga spoilers into a spoiler tag, but anime spoilers don't have to be. Let's just assume everyone coming to this thread is up to date with the anime.

 

BUT OMG dude, episode 6 was crazy. I didn't expect Reiner and Berthold to be Titans. I was browsing reddit yesterday and I didn't realize this before, but here's a screencap from episode 5. That subtle foreshadowing. Spoilering because image is large. Not a manga spoiler. I haven't read the manga.

But episode 6 definitely caught me off guard. So many reveals. But how they revealed Berthold and Reiner was executed amazingly. I've never read the manga so I don't know how the reveal was done. But they had a lot of freedom to do it in animation. It happened reeeally quickly, but just before Reiner and Berthold revealed, before we see that lightning strike the wall (which looked the same as episode 1 of season 1), you can briefly see their faces turn into the manga-version of the colossal and armored titans. Masterfully executed. And the soundtrack didn't disappoint, that scene was all on point! See gif below.

 

Past this point, I have my speculations. There's a couple of storylines going on at the same time, but I wanted to discuss my thoughts on why there was no hole in the wall yet there were titans inside. Back in Connie's village, there weren't any bodies or blood right? But the houses were still destroyed. Only conclusion I can come up with is that all those people turned into titans (hence what looked like Connie's mom on top of his house). And those titans are the ones who attacked Christa, Ymir, and the people in the castle. Or just that those titans came from other villages near the castle. So what if that big gorilla titan could turn normal people into titans??? I bet he's originally human, slipped inside the wall and started visiting villages and turning those people to titans. Honestly, all that makes sense to me. If that's not what it was then idk what's going on. xDD

 

Reiner and Berthold's motivations don't make any sense though. Apparently they want to drive humans to extinction. But if humans were extinct, what would the titans do? Like that part doesn't make sense at all.

^It's really hard to answer any of those questions without spoiling it for you. but you're pretty much on the mark about connies village and where the titans came from. the anime kinda confirms it with sasha's scene when the titan was small enough to be inside the house as he was eating the child's mother, and when the titan on connie's home said "welcome back" to connie. note that during that same scene, they made a huge emphasis on connies eyes and the titans eyes, which were exactly the same. 

 

 

 

as for the reiner and berty reveal, when you look back on the first few episodes/chapters, you can see that there were many hints pointing to them being those titans. the biggest one being back when the 104th were having dinner and talking about the shiganshina district being destroyed, and eren said he saw both the armored and colossal titan. when the trainee's got excited and asked him what they looked like, the panel (in both manga and anime) pans to reiner and berty eating in the distance lol.

^Oh shoot they did with the eyes! I didn't realize that. I thought it was just Connie staring at the titan's eyes but there was an underlying meaning to that. That's interesting. But yeah, knowing the author, most of the hints he gives are so misleading sometimes. Like I thought for sure Christa was the titan because she went missing during that snow expedition/training they did. Also because the priest said they were keeping their eyes on her and this was the priest who knew about the titan in the walls. But then it turned out to be Ymir. Truth be told, I don't remember Ymir much in the first season to be honest. I'll probably rewatch the first season at some point. Like that part with Annie looking at her palm and Reiner escaping from her grip --- I didn't notice that at all. It just looked like she was shocked Reiner escaped from her grip but noooo, there was an underlying meaning to that as well!

 

Sometimes I wonder how far the author had planned all this.

Yeah there are so many underlying meanings to the most simplest things. It's actually shocking how far back those moments go. Honestly, Ymir isn't a main character so you won't see much of her after this season tbh. I'm excited for the next few episodes though, especially Mikasa's character development. Look forward to see that titan again, but not for what comes after it :~;

I wouldn't mind talking about the manga here, since it's way far ahead of the main series. I'm caught up on the manga, but have yet to see the second season yet.

personally i've got mixed views on it.. from early on i saw armin as a successor for erwin since armin has been the main reason why many of them got out of sticky situations, but then it all went to shit when armin got burnt, hange came back from the dead, and bert died lol. i think it's okay now i guess, since both he and eren can actually fight together now, but with eren using force and armin's tactics, he could probably use the colossal form better than bert ever did. 

 

what i'm more interested in is (manga spoilers)

the idea that the akermans are a sub-titan experiment that are strong enough to kill the likes of the beast and armored titan. so much so that zeke never wants to see them again and reiner has nightmares about them (mikasa and levi). how exactly are they "experiments"? a theory i have is that i think the marleyans tried to create "human titans" to combat actual titans and regular humans which would pretty much make them the most powerful race. but something went wrong with the experiment, so they tried to get rid of the akermans and their memories, only to find that their memories could not be erased. this might be the reason why the akerman family were banished and hunted down.

as for mikasa's asian heritage, i don't think she's the "last surviving asian". we've only just found out that the main characters "world" was just an island and the real world is so much bigger than that. i'm going to assume that mikasa's mother's ancestors (and a bunch of other asians) moved to marley land and helped with the akerman experiments, and when they were sent to paradis both races were killed off. the author said snk's world is a parallel to our real world, so there is probably a continent filled with asians, just like the marley's and eldians are pretty much two different types of europeans. 

either way, i think i'm most excited for this revelation more than anything else. i could care less about the marley war with other countries since it just feels like the authors way to keep reminding us that there is a bigger picture to what we're seeing, which is great but i'd like to stick to main focus of the story lol

I think it was pretty obvious the titan in the house was Connie's mother. I wonder why humans started becoming Titans.

Also is there a particular reason there are dinosaurs in the opening? Seems really weird lol.

But I'm obsessed with the season 2 ending, very mysterious and fitting song I cant wait for the soundtrack.

I assume you don't read the manga but the S2 ending kinda tells you about the lore about the titans and not just random gorey imagery. 

 

Also, iirc, it's going to be a (long) while before they find the reason why humans turn into titans...

the opening is really pretty weird, nothing in the manga explains why they had dinosaurs and stuff at the end of it so i'm going to assume they just did that to symbolize the titans being like animals.. i can't really think of any other explanation. and yeah the ending is spoilery af, im shocked that they even did such a thing so early on. if you want to know about the start of titans you just need to look at the ending.... kinda hoping season 3 is 24 episodes since the arc after clash of the titans (this one) is really long. 

 

edit; okay so i have nothing better to do, and since i'm so interested in snk i decided to look more into the ending of the opening where all the animals are running...

my conclusion is pretty much a spoiler so..... :/

So for manga readers that are up to date, we know that there are 9 "main" titans. The beast titan, who we know to be Zeke, is running alongside all the animals. I have a theory that those animals running alongside him are different forms of the beast titan. We know that each titans appearance changes depending on the person's looks and characteristics. When Zeke was young, he loved playing with his little teddy, which was an Ape. What does the best titan look like? an Ape. We know that there are more Colossal titan shifters, because they're the ones within the walls on paradis island, so who's to say there aren't more Beast titan's? I think we're probably going to see more of them later on in the manga. If not that, then at the very least, those animals shown were past beast titan's forms before zeke's, and zeke's titan is running alongside his predecessors. 

 

Which also made me think, as I mentioned above, we know that there are 9 main titans, however, we've only been introduced to 8 of them. 

 

Founding - Held by Reiss family > Stolen by Grisha > Eaten by Eren 

Attack - Held by The Owl "Eren" > Passed onto Grisha > Passed onto Eren 

Colossal - Berthold > Eaten by Armin 

Female - Annie

Armored - Reiner 

Beast - Zeke 

Mule - Pikuu

Jaw - Marcel > Eaten by Ymir > Eaten by Galliard

 

So who's the 9th one? well, i think it's going to be a titan that can fly. I know it sounds mad but the last few chapters have been about the marley side saying the titan powers are useless if the advancement of technology is allowing them to "battle in the sky" with planes etc. Likewise with the eldian/paradis side, they use 3D Maneuver gear so that they can combat the titans mid air, because they're no match for the titans when on the ground. Titans are land fighters, so for them to have an advanced titan that can beat that technology, they need a titan to be able to fly lol. I think they hinted at this in the last few chapters too.

Then again, the 9th titan could just be the sub titan experiment, akermans, but i think that's the least likely since they were referred to as experiments and "sub titan"

It makes sense when you put it like that. And honestly knowing Shingeki no Kyojin, I would not be surprised to see flying titans. After Armin became a titan shifter, and after finding Grisha's journals, I don't think anything can be surprising at this point. But hey, I didn't think that before either, but ended up being shocked quickly (looking at you chapter 77, thanks for rubbing salt in the wounds).

 

But the direction of the manga is good. I'm probably going to reread the last few chapters to make sure I've got everything straight because I'm still confused on some aspects.

 

I genuinely want the anime to stick with the manga's sequence. It's good, complicated, and is definitely loaded with content to divulge in.

Was watching episode 6 reaction videos on youtube and this man had the best one. Just his excitement and denial throughout the entire thing was golden. If y'all have time (or like reaction videos), watch it from beginning to end. He makes little comments here and there that makes you go "I'm so sorry dude" because he's gonna get so shocked he turns from drunk to sober.

It's been so long from the Annie events that I don't even remember what happened there lmao, just that that part was great. Ah I remember know, she was left in coma. The other part that I remember had impact was getting to Connie's house and the titans-are-humans-flag over there.

 

Anyway I loved the Armin or Erwin tension that chapter. I was rooting hard for Armin but even if he'll definitely prove himself since he is one of the MCs and all, from a survival point of view Erwin was a better choice I guess. Like what...Froch or that guy in the latest chapters said, while Eren was furious and all their choice was definitely selfish lol like at least admit it now. Like why would everyone care for Armin apart from Mikasa, Eren, and Sasha and the guys compared to Erwin. I do like Armin being a titan.

 

I also..completely forgot what happened to Ymir. Like Galliard has her titan power now, so either I forgot 100% what happened to her, or as I remember she was taken by Reiner and died of age or wounds and then eaten off camera by Galliard. 

 

Jesus I didn't realize the mule was Pikuu lmao. Like I understood she shape shifted and was tired but I wa slike huh? was that off camera. I'm not sure why I keep messing up with the manga and forgetting or not noticing things lol.

 

Then hmm what else. I didn't understand what Reiner said about Mikasa and Levi. Was subproduct the words? I didn't get it.

One of the scenes I thought was very powerful was when they got to the ocean, Eren's reaction was nothing like I expected. After so long, the truth completely shattered that moment. 

 

I'm not sure which animals minaeshi is mentioning, the ones from the 2nd season opening? I honestly thought it was just a size to size comparison on how big the Beast titan was, but who knows. 

 

 

Acckk the good animation is making me want to watch the 2nd season. I got hooked with the first season and then went to the manga. At the same time I barely remember some stuff so.

I actually feel like Armin was the better choice. Erwin was notorious for leading the survey corps to their deaths repeatedly and coming back with very little information. For years the scouting legion was just going beyond the walls, killing maybe 20 titans, losing half of their troops and having nothing to show for it. Erwin is good at making plans but whenever there is a fatal flaw in the plan that could potentially wipe out the whole team, it's always Armin who says, does, or figures out something that could save them, which allows Hanji, Levi and Erwin to make better decisions. That arc showed that Armin isn't a good leader (Jean was better suited in that circumstance), but he's an amazing strategist that wont play with peoples lives to reach a selfish goal, which is what they need.

But yeah from a political standpoint in the manga, Erwin was the logical, short term choice lol 

 

It was mentioned that Ymir decided to go back with Reiner and Berty after they captured her and Eren, saying that she felt bad for Marcel and wanted to repay his family (knowing about the Marley promise to Eldian parents when they give up their children to become titan shifters)by allowing Galliard to eat her and take back the titan power that was given to them [their family]. And also so that Reiner and Bert don't go back to Marley empty handed, especially since they lost Annie. Although she mentioned she would only go with them if they promised to protect and bring no harm to Historia lmao 

 

Reiner didn't say anything about Mikasa and Levi, but Zeke mentioned the Akermans being byproducts (or sub-products, whichever translation you read) of titan science/experiments. Reiner just had a nightmare about them whooping his and Berts ass lol. i think it definitely hints to human/shifter titan experimentation where the humans have titan shifter powers but don't actually turn into titans. 

 

yeah i was mentioning the animals in the 2nd season opening lol. but that's just me analyzing everything lol. to be fair, considering how spoilery the 2nd opening of the 1st series was, and how many spoilers are in the ending of the second season, and the opening as well, i wouldn't put it past them for this to be another spoiler or hint.
