Hi :),

(Talking mostly about H!P content but everyone can of course chime in)

after filling (again) nearly 3TB with files of H!P stuff and a NAS with back up stuff. My question is, how are you organizing your collection? From the first heso/Hello Morning to the newest 2014 performance?

I have 3 directories named: Drama's (with movies, musicals and stage plays), Concerts, MV and Other.

In the subdirectories I have them divided in: H!P, BK, C-ute, S/m, MM and other.

With the concerts I have them named like this: Year, Season, Title (with sometimes multiple files in one directory, like the H!P concert which now come in an A and B setlist)

I like how I organized it. Hope I gave you some inspiration!

Mine, photos have its own folder, with sub-folders by artist's name, mp3s and videos in one directory too also with sub-folders by artist name. the files like music videos have their names starting with its released date. Then arrange the icons by Name.

Tons of different directories.

Alo-Hello
Concerts
DVD Magazines
DVDs
Movies
Music Videos
Photobook
Photobook (Making of)
Plays
Single-Albums
TV Shows
Unsorted

Within those are different folders for the different groups, person, etc. I use to not bother having subfolders, since I just renamed everything, but when your folder has 1000+ files in it, Windows starts taking a longer time to display what's in the folder. At it's worse, it literally took 2 minutes to see what was in a folder. I'd just be sitting there waiting. Cleaning up the folder sucked too, cause when I created a folder, it'd be a 2 minute refresh of the folder contents. Then drag/drop the files, waiting some more. The problem doesn't seem to be as bad with Win7 or higher, but it still exists.

I also remove the "date modified" field off, cause it's slow when accessing files through the network.

That doesn't organize it though. It still all lumped into a single folder.

Do you guys backup all your downloads? I see one of you has over 2tb's!!!

On average a physical HD (not an SSD) will last 10 years if your very lucky.  2 - 3 or less years if your not!

Do you use a raid system?

 Just wondering :)

I wanted to start a new topic with this but apparently I cannot!

Of course!

Given the current situation with HDD prices (low) and reliability (also low), you'd be crazy not to backup your files if you care at all about them.

Potentially replaceable stuff like internet downloads gets backed up to an external disk. For more important files, a multiple redundancy backup to external disk 1, external disk 2, and the cloud.

RAID is not a backup! Its primary purpose is avoiding downtime, not protecting your data.

A cheap NAS with just 2 bay's already work fine with 2 3-4TB HDD's. And on top a online storage which cost around 2-3£ for unlimited storage. I would hate to loose very old stuff i watch just to sit back and enjoy and think back to that time.

NAS + Online storage and a seedbox should be "save" :P.

Got over 50TB of downloaded stuff in external hds (with probably 40TB actually worth), so at this level I can't backup my storage. So, I basically backup the stuff I download there (sometimes after watching, sometimes without). I usually fill 1TB of data of 48G-related variety in a year, so once a year I'm forced to buy a bigger HD, move the information from the old to the new one, and use the old one to backup something else. So, I have a good rotation of disks (for example, my 48G variety one is now a 5TB disk, once it's getting full I will get a 6TB one, copy the information there, and then move stuff from a 4TB disk that's nearly full to that 5TB one).

Of course, a few disks got errors (my old 1080p LOD hd failed, and so one of the files got 5mb corrupted and never recovered them). My Drama HD got a couple of errors too, but haven't bothered to check which episodes (if any) were lost. And my old 3TB anime HD completely failed, sometimes it can be recognized by the computer, sometimes it can't, sometimes I can copy a file to the computer, sometimes it doesn't let me at all. I just hope that, by the time the HD crashes (and all of them do) to no longer care about the contents (like with the anime or drama disks).

Currently:
  • AKB Variety (5TB, main shows, radio, streaming)
  • AKB Variety 2 (1TB, members as invitees or segments in non-48G related programs)
  • AKB Dramas (1TB, AKB-related dramas)
  • 48G Concerts (2TB, 48G-related concerts as they aired on TV)
  • AKB48 ISO (1TB, ISOs for singles, albums, members' singles and subgroups within AKB48)
  • AKB48 ISO 2 (3TB, ISOs for varieties, movies, photobooks, etc)
  • AKB48 ISO Concerts 1 (4TB, ISOs for concerts, 2008-Sep 2014)
  • AKB48 ISO Concerts 2 (4TB, ISOs for concerts, Sep 2014-Now)
  • SHIMAI ISO (4TB, ISOs for singles, albums, varieties, movies, concerts, etc from AKB48's sister groups only)
  • MOMOCLO ISO (4TB, ISOs for singles, albums, varieties, movies, concerts, etc from Momoiro Clover)
  • LOD 2008-2012 (4TB, 48G daily theater performances from 2008 to 2012)
  • LOD 2013 (3TB, 48G daily theater performances during 2013)
  • LOD 2014 (4TB, 48G daily theater performances during 2014)
  • LOD 2015 (4TB, 48G daily theater performances during 2015)
  • LOD 2016 (5TB, 48G daily theater performances during 2016, includes some from 2015 that didn't fit previous disk, will fill this one by the end of the year)
Also
  • Varieties (2TB, no AKB-related, Momoclo or varieties in general)
  • Idoling!!! (1TB, Idoling!!!-related stuff including episodes and ISO of live concerts)
  • Concerts (1TB, non 48G-related concerts as streamed on TV)
  • Dramas, Series, Movies (2TB, non AKB-related dramas, including western series, this one got maybe a dozen bad blocks)
  • Anime (3TB, unreliable)
  • LOD 1080p (2TB, LODs in 1080p, already copied those to the respective disks, keeping this one just as unreliable backup)
  • Miscellaneous (1TB, disk with some old stuff, old ISOs from groups I used to follow like ELT, Do As Infinity, also software and some movies).
So, 50TB of pure idol-related data i actually care about. I check every disk at the beginning of the year, usually between February and March (except the ones that I buy during January).

Since you have a relatively small collection of stuff, your problem is easily solved.  What I do is store everything on WD Black hard disks.  Even with 80+ discs, the footprint is still pretty small on the shelving area.  I've had to search for things from 10 years back, and it does take some time.  But nothing has gone wrong as of yet.  The really good material is also backed up in duplicate to Verbatim 50GB disks.  Triple redundancy for the favorites (about 30TB).  Aside from that, once Krusha and Mage get the new archive going, WE as a whole will be the AKB48 archive for future generations to come.
