(From manga reader's point of view pinned thread is completely spammed by anime watchers, so it should be left for anime only, I think. And forget about ties between both, anime cannot be rendered in book form.)

At local comic store I accidentally spotted newest volumes of Naruto and One Piece - simply rarities in this part of the world. Both seemed interesting, Naruto even "encouraged" me to read it (lettering, action!), but after checking volume numbers I left both. Skipping 50> volumes is just utterly bad... But I was accidentally infected with japanese manga (i.e. written in japanese), as it seems a great language learning tool.

Now I'm trying to find something interesting and being one-shot or short series. After checking Superdash Manga Program (one issue landed in mentioned shop, too), I noticed Twice Up (published by Shueisha). Too few to place an order. Oricon charts? I don't know what could be interesting here (going into romance series could be awkward), also dominated by long series. H!O users' recommendations? One general anime/manga thread filled nearly with anime only, single-series topics also look like mostly anime related. Hello, I know there should be also readers! What could you suggest? With plain action, for example. Humour? Rather without plots ending after ten volumes of going back and forth, please
Please also include explanations, why you list such manga here - pure lists shall be left in second thread, they really don't help.

...or maybe should I really try Naruto, as HMV allows purchasing even such old books?

20th Century Boys (It's a pretty normal manga, as in no magic, powers, demons) but the story is so intense and the characters are so interesting it's worth reading. (Especially if you like Psychological things (but if you do than ANYTHING by Naoki Urasawa is worth checking out))

For episodic things I'd suggest Ranma 1/2 (the storyline changes like every 2-3 chapters and the characters usually stay the same)

If you want something like Naruto/Bleach then go with Mahou Sensei Negima

Very first volumes of Naruto and AKB49 arrived - I was shocked as nearly EVERY kanji is furiganized. Kinda insane learning tools! Now waiting for currency exchanges to become better...

Twice Up, despite being published by Shueisha (comics, huh?) and promoted in comic magazine, appeared to be nice small prose books With some nice irasto (those in color are... nice), but it still seems not to be easy for now. Books are themselves nice - so small in format and with thin paper. Japanese respect shelf space...

20th Century Boys and Negima I mostly suggested because they're really good

20th Century Boys Synopsis

In 1969, young boys Kenji, Otcho, Yoshitsune and Maruo build, in an empty field, a hideout they call their secret base, in which they and their friends can get together to share manga and stolen porn magazines and listen to a radio. To celebrate the event, Otcho draws a symbol for the base that would represent their friendship. After their friends Yukiji and Donkey join the gang, they imagine a future scenario where villains would try to destroy the world, and in which the boys would stand up and fight; this scenario is transcribed and labeled Book of Prophecy (よげんの書 Yogen no sho?).
The series itself opens in the late 1990s, where Kenji is a convenience store owner, finding solace in his childhood adventures as he takes care of his baby niece Kanna and his mother. After Donkey is reported to have committed suicide, Kenji stumbles upon a large cult led by a man known only as "Friend". The cult has a plan to destroy the world on New Year's Eve of 2000, (referred to in the latter half of the story as the Bloody New Year's Eve), and the events that are currently unfolding are suspiciously close to the plan documented in the Book of Prophecy. Kenji begins to recruit some of his older friends, including Otcho and Yoshitsune, in an attempt to stop Friend.

Mahou Sensei Negima Premise

Negi Springfield is a ten-year-old wizard from Wales, who dreams of becoming a Magister Magi (Approximate Latin translation: "Master of Magic" or "Master Mage"), a special wizard who uses his powers to help normal people, using covers such as working for NGOs.
Negi's reason for becoming a Magister Magi is to find his father, Nagi Springfield, the legendary mage also known as the "Thousand Master", who is believed to be dead.
After graduating from the Merdiana Magic Academy in Wales, Negi is given a duty as a cover in the real world, and training, before he actually becomes a Magister Magi. That duty is to become an English teacher at Mahora Academy in Japan. The task will not be easy, however, as Negi will become a teacher to a Middle School class of 31 older girls, each very special in her own way. The series details his time and adventures in Japan as he gains acceptance and respect from his students, helps them in their problems, and faces magical threats from inside and outside Mahora Academy. Although each of the girls has her own back story and personality, Negi's main relationship is with Asuna Kagurazaka, his student and roommate, who dislikes him initially but later accepts him as a friend and becomes his partner, helping find clues about his father and his life.

The story line actually picks up but the most interesting part is how the characters change, how they feel for each other and Negi and what their powers are when they make a Pactio~

I picked up a copy of Hiroki Endo's "Eden: It's an Endless World!" - first volume/compilation.
It's in English but, surprisingly, they've maintained the direction of the Japanese... so starts at what I would consider the back, and reads right to left - which takes a bit of getting used to.

It's meant to be good, but haven't really started it yet - so will let you know when I've got a bit further in as to whether it is any good or not.

Was ruined by "news" that AKB49 is about boy dressing as girl... and even becoming girl idol. LOLWUT, and first staff member mentioned is Mayu fan Well, it even makes story more interesting, without sarcasm here, and explains, why won't be animated in following year in favor of new scenario.

Uzumaki  is a seinen horror manga series written and illustrated by Junji Ito. Appearing as a serial in the weekly manga magazine Big Comic Spirits from 1998 to 1999, the chapters were compiled into three bound volumes by Shogakukan and published from August 1998 to September 1999.

 

The series tells the story of the citizens of Kurôzu-cho, a fictional city which is plagued by a supernatural curse involving spirals. The story for Uzumaki originated when Ito attempted to write a story about people living in a very long row house, and he was inspired to use a spiral shape to achieve the desired length. Ito believes the horror of Uzumaki is effective due to its subversion of symbols which are normally positively portrayed in Japanese media, and its Lovecraftian theme of protagonists struggling against a mysterious force stronger than themselves.

I've been reading Haganai as well as Inu x Boku SS, both of which I would recommend. I like what you would called Harem manga, I especially like Haganai which is so far the best I've read.

My all time manga rec is Dogs: Bullets And Carnage by Shirow Miwa, it's an action manga and leans more to seinen that it is shounen, in my opinion, what with the violent and sometimes mature content. It's definitely one of the heavier manga but the story is really amazingly detailed and has a nice depth to it and I honestly think there's no boring arc about it so far. They also illustrate and worked on Joker Game, Nisemonogatari, Guilty Crown and Kiznaiver. On the same genre, Gangsta. is also a very good manga. It has more lighter and comedic moments, again in my opinion, compared to Dogs but both are good tbh. 

 

Dogs synopsis : Sometime in the future, somewhere in Europe, a city has many levels of underground, secret, dangerous levels that have answers to the past. Mihai is a retired assassin who has returned home to settle a vendetta and start a new life as a restaurant owner. Haine was genetically experimented on as a child, which led to him possesing dog like attributes. Badou is his clumsy chain smoking partner who becomes deranged when denied cigarettes. Naoto was orphaned as a child and has amnesia was trained to wield the sword. Their pasts are somehow connected to the secret underground and the organization that controls it.

 

For anime, Dogs have an anime if you prefer that. Other than that, I also have been liking Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. REALLY awesome artwork, very smooth and just beautiful and the coloring ugh so amazing. The story itself is really nice. It's a slice of life/josei anime set in the past about a guy who just got out of prison and is learning the art of rakugo from this very famous person and the story delves into their past. it's really nice tbh. I also love Love Live but I think everyone already knows what the anime's about lmao.
