Metal and H!P fans

Posted by ninety9nights, 16 June 2011 · 441 views

Through the 2 years I've been on this forum, I've noticed that many of the fans here were also die hard Metal fans even before discovering H!P.

I'm just curious:
What attracts metal fans to Hello! Project?

As far as I can tell, H!P is waaaaaay different than metal. (Mind you that I'm not a metal fan so my knowledge of metal music is only around the stereotype.)
Fierce guitar riffs and gut pounding drums to cutesy dance choreographs and high pitched bubblegum pop.
It's like both ends of the music spectrum.
Is it the contrast that attracts you, or is it something else entirely?

The contrast, for me ( im also into "industrial" stuff ) but i can agree with Kantutan Tayo also.
Kantutan Tayo.... you speak the truth!
as for me, it really was the contrast.
I've always been extreme with my taste of music... like... there was a time when I just couldn't listen to ANYTHING than Punk. The same was with Emo Music (hazukashii XD) and then, after a while, metal. Then I only listened to H!P. Only.
Now its somewhat in between all of those things. Most of my playlists are: The Offspring, Morning Musume, David Guetta, Slipknot, Rihanna, Big Bang one after another. it's totally mixed up. ^_^
but it's cool that you recognized that too... because I did, too. :)
HAHAHAHA.... oh my.... that's so true....

Well, not into Metal (but don't mind listening to it) i use to listen to Alt-rock, Rock, emo, scream-mo, punk....

but then i changed my style and found H!P.....

i use to listen to Britney and Christina (like late 90's Pop).... so, i must've reverted back to times when i was younger.... not sure why.... i guess to me it's just something different.... sorry i couldn't explain it better... but awesome observation...
Ok, I may not be a good example, because I'm into all sorts of music. But, I did have my huge metal phase, from about 8th grade to the start of college. I explored metal inside and out, all different sub genres of metal. And no, metal isn't just all hatred and darkness, that would mainly just be in the Death, Doom, and Black categories. Metal as a whole category is VERY expansive. There is so much more beyond just the stereotypes. IMO, I think when most people who have no experience listening to metal think about metal, they probably think of Death Metal or Black Metal, because those are really what give metal it's bad stereotypical names. But there is SO much beyond that: there's Power Metal, there's Speed Metal, Symphonic Metal, Progressive Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Viking Metal, Folk Metal, Neo-classical Metal, Nu Metal, Gothic Metal, Metalcore, Thrash, etc..

I have tried out pretty much every sub genre of metal I know, and I think that is one thing that drew me too it. There are SO many different styles. And I think that is one thing that H!P had in common with Metal as a whole. H!P had so many different sounds and styles to offer me, so I got hooked on it too. I really don't think that some genres of Metal are too far off from pop stylistically, there is a lot of high tempo and upbeat metal out there. I am still a metal fan to this day, though my MP3 player may not be filled with it anymore lol. I've just weeded out what my favorites in the genres are(much like I do with any category of music I listen to).
@Mab: I know Metal is a lot more diverse than what I put up there. I'm just too lazy to elaborate (so I just used the stereotype) and I didn't want my entry to end with just 3 lines so I added some more stuff to "lengthen" it a bit. Albeit my knowledge is only about "I know there are more" but not up to knowing what they are called, how they sound and stuff like that. Nice to read your input though. :good:

@everyone: Thanks for all your input! It's really nice to know you guys see H!P. To be honest, I have this in mind since a few years ago but I only realized that I could ask this through my blog. ^^;
I'm a metal fan and an H!P fan. I embrace both because they are both outside the American mainstream blob of unrecognizable genres that are labeled, for lack of a better word, "pop" (e.g. "country" music by thoroughly urban performers and "rap" music by, to use the lingo, posers). J-Pop is all out, without pretense... it isn't watered down... it's sugary sweet and makes no apologies. It is pop, but not in the sense of being rock-lite, R&B-lite or whatever... it is just pop and just for fun... just as metal is raw aggression, without apology or pretense.

Both are escapist and both are real in the sense that they don't pretend to be anything that they aren't- they are real in their falseness, as it were, in that no one with a brain really believes that idols are always perfect dolls or that metal rockers worship Satan. It's all fantasy, which is better than depressing attempts at realism.

Also, there is an element of both being taboo here in America. A lot of Americans would instantly label me a pervert for being a "wota" and, of course, these same moralists would condemn metal lyrics. When someone tells me not to do something, I like to do it just to yank their chain.
I'm slightly different from some of the metalheads here on H!P.
I started mostly alternative rock with tons of now classic rock thrown in on the side. Now, while I haven't exactly forgotten my roots in alternrock, I'm also a progmetal and some power metal kinda guy.

But besides that, I'm also fairly into Kpop and OPM (not the newer stuff if you know what genre i refer to). Since I'm a classical pianist by training, I'm also an avid orchestral and OST kind of guy. Yep, my tastes are different.

What I like about H!P is the disparate sounds they draw together. I'm not always about /le gasp!/ the idols, but overall how it all comes together. If you can give me a song that has something different instrumentally that I find works with the vocals, nevermind the image, I'm sold. The only thing is keeping me sold: prove to me that you recognize your own talents and limitations, use them to the best of your ability, while always seeking improvement, and I'm fine with waiting for the next thing to come out.
