Hey everyone!
Recently I've been thinking about the current Morning Musume and the fact that new girls will join soon. For a quite long time I've completely ignored the fact that auditions are being hold again. The reason was that I kind of felt shocked when the auditions were announced. At that time, the 10th gen and even the 9th gen were so new to me that I needed time to get used to them - new girls didn't fit into my image at all. Finally, I feel like I know the current members enough to be able to think about the new girls. I now think of the auditions as an opportunity to add to the group what's lacking at the moment.
So, I've asked myself: What is it that I would like to see in the new generation?
To answer that question, I should look at the current MM and see what's there already. To do that, I'll just go through all the members quickly.
Let's start with Haruka. She's got deep vocals, her dancing is good and she's showing off her personality in TV Shows very well (wow that kick at KuroBara ). It seems to me that she's going for the Yankee spot in the group and I think that's a good way to go for her. At the same time, she's surprisingly mature even though she's the youngest of the group. So she definitely brings vocals, personality and acting skills to the group.
Masaki. Her vocals are still childish and high pitched, but I think she will turn out to be a decent/good singer. Her dancing is quite good, too. The thing about this girl is her cuteness and lightheartedness. She's bringing sweetness to the group and it's fun watching her.
Ayumi. Her vocals are okay, I don't think she'll be an outstanding singer, but there's no doubt she's awesome at dancing. She's very pretty, too, and I can see her gaining a large fan base. As long as she's in, the dancing part of the group is definitely covered.
Haruna. Her vocals are weak/decent, she'll be okay in the future though. Her dancing looks kinda awkward, but sweet at the same time. that girl definitely brings in fashion sense (and I'm still hoping for a fashion blog!) as well as personality. She stood out in TV shows and I think she'll step into Sayu's footsteps which is a good idea.
Kanon. Her vocals are promising, I think she'll become kind of like Gaki at that point. Her dancing is completely alright, lately she even seems to enjoy it. when she first joined, she brought in a big smile and filled the comedy aspect, but right now it seems that she doesn't feel good and isn't satisfied with herself. I think it's because of puberty and she'll be alright again. So in my eyes, she still is responsible for the comedy.
Riho. Decent/good vocals, but overused. I'm seriously worried because this girl definitely needs a break. However, she brings in skills. She's skilled at dancing, skilled at singing (not skilled enough [yet] for the amount and difficulty of lines she gets though), skilled at acting and she's pretty. She's a hard working girl, I just hope they won't break her because of the burden they gave her from the very beginning. So what she definitely gives to the group is skill and ambition.
Erina. Weak vocals, good dancing, outstanding at photoshoots, expressive. Seriously, if you watch the 1 2 3 PV, she just sticks out. Besides being the Wota, they also seem to try getting her used to TV shows (OhaStar) and I think that's her way to go. She brings in looks, a memorable face and the Wota personality.
Mizuki. Good vocals, good dancing, great smile. She has the girl next door vibe and that's definitely a good thing. She's also doing the Wota character which is nice, but what is important about that girl is her singing imo. She's steady and good.
I'm not thinkng about Reina and Sayumi because they will not be around for too long, maybe 1 or 2 years at the most. So I don't think it's wise to consider them right now.
okay, so what is it that MM lacks in my opinion?
-vocals. We have Mizuki, Haruka, Kanon, Riho. While Haruka and Kanon are definitely more in the deeper area, Riho also seems to be better at singing in a deep voice. Mizuki is good at singing the higher parts. So what we need is another girl that sings the higher parts. Also, a strong singer would be good. It seems that looking for the "Suppin Utahime" in this audition is a wise decision.
-"friends". This sounds stupid, but I'm missing these obvious pairings. As an example I'll take Yossie/Rika, Aibon/Nono, maybe also Sayu/Eri, Ai/Risa. Yes, there's PonPon, and I'm sure all or most of the girls are friends with each other, but a pairing with a really strong friendship would give a more comfy feeling to the group.
- a straight-forward girl. Haruka, Haruna and maybe Eripon are already heading into that direction, but I think somebody who's more straight forward would be nice. Someone who's just saying what she thinks. I know this is not what Japanese people tend to do, but I've also experienced that they find this kind of behavior funny, so maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea. If a straight forward girl would be added, the three mentioned current members might go out of themselves more, too.
- a funny/comedian girl. Having Zukki is nice, but doing puns alone is not fun. So, a girl Zukki can do puns with would be really cool. I think a fun and smiley girl is never a bad thing, and having girls that are good at comedy can only be positive for a group.
Okay, that's it. It was kind of hard thinking about this, but I feel that my thoughts are more ordered now. In the end, the decision is done by the agency after all, so we can't change it, right?
Please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions, too!

No, but seriously, I think they need more outstanding vocalists, because Haruka was the only vocal ace that came from the 10th gen, whereas 9th gen had 3 good vocalists.
I think a lot of it depends how many girls he chooses. I think it could be anywhere from 2 to 5, so hopefully he'll pick a good amount of girls to fill in any imperfections the current lineup has.
