You sure this "oba[a]chan" they call her refers to "grandma"? I always thought it refers more to the "aunty" version (aka like in "middle age lady"). But maybe I'm wrong.

Referring to dictio: obasan [叔母さん or 伯母さん, depending on age] is aunt, obaasan [お祖母さん] is in contrary grandmother, but.. also older woman [お婆さん]. Making things worse, one could also use obasan [小母さん] in meaning of mature woman. Now try to differentiate these words in speech without context
All these words end with -san, while above is with -chan. Oba may be also honorificsless - 叔母 or 伯母 in aunt meaning, then appending ちゃん we get "girl auntie" or somewhat.
