Information about Anime Expo 2008 for reference purpose

Since Anime Expo will be held in the same location as the previous year, and AX 2008 was generally considered a success by both attendees and staffs, this year will likely follow most of last year's methods.
AX 2008 can be a good reference to what we should be expecting this year, so let's take a look.

Anime Expo is a four day event, with opening ceremony on Day 1, main events in between, and a closing ceremony on the last day, Day 4.
2008 was the first year AX was held at the LACC (Los Angeles Convention Center).
Along with a new site, AX implemented other tactics to make the convention run smoother than previous years.

One of the biggest improvement was the bar code scanning system for pre-register attendees.
If you have pre-registered online via the AX website, simply print out the bar code and bring it with you when you are getting your badge.
For more information, please refer to the websites listed in the post above.

Make sure to check out the videos at AX backstage.
It has information about the registration process, what kind of things you can do at the convention, and even showcase places around AX where you can grab a bite to eat.

Youtube videos of Anime Expo 2008

Here are some video reviews of AX 2008 to give you a better idea on what to expect this year.

Video diary of SoySauce070886 - A detailed look at the main events and other happening around AX 2008 as a regular badge holder.

Video Journal by Anime Diet - See what it is like to have a press pass at Anime Expo, also a look at how the line ups for events and autographs are like.

Anime Expo 2008 David Hayter and Shoko Nakagawa Experience - Summary for two of the main Guest of Honor for 2008.

PeeDeeFlo - Watch out for this guy! Chances are, he'll make fun of you, if he catches you on camera. You've been warned.

Major points of concern for 2009

Opening and Closing ceremonies
Morning Musume will be attending the opening ceremony, which is @ West Hall A, on Day 1 @ 9:00AM.
No words yet if they will be at the closing ceremony.

Concert
For Morning Musume fans like ourselves, the biggest difference (disappointment) this year, is that Anime Expo will NOT be using the Nokia Theatre, as they did for 2008.
Instead, main events, such as the Morning Musume concert will be held inside a LACC hall, West Hall A @ 2:30PM on Day 2.

Q&A panel
Morning Musume will hold a panel on Day 1 @ 2PM in the Petree Hall.
Tsunku panel will be on Day 3 @ 9AM, also in Petree Hall.

Please refer to the official schedule for details.

Preparing for the Concert

We all understand that going to a concert is not as simple as walking into the stands, and just sitting down. This, being the first time Morning Musume is performing outside of asia, that's open to the general public (Hawaii doesn't count, as those were fan club only events), it is important we prepare ourselves to make this once in a life time event into something magical.

First things first

Before you even pack your bags, there are a few things you need to get.

Tickets
You will need a ticket to get into the concert, and there are three major ways you can obtain one.
1) Buy a $20 reserved seating ticket when you pre-register with Anime Expo.
2) Get a free reserved seating ticket when you book a room inside the AX hotel block.
3) Wait in line on the day of the concert for a free standby ticket.

Both kinds of reserved seating ticket are the same. Like its name suggests, a reserved seating ticket guarantee you a seat in the house. You have to claim your ticket after you have picked up your badge at Anime Expo. Seating are likely to be decided based on when you pick up your ticket (Based on what happened in 2008). Seats in the front are handed out first. When there are left over tickets, those are given away on the day of the concert to people who lined up for a free standby ticket.

For more details concerning tickets, please check the with Anime Expo's website and forum.

Glow sticks
Every H!P fans' best friend at a concert. The standard weapon of choice to get your idol's attention.

Glow sticks come in different shape and sizes, even LED powered.
Size wise, 6" long ones are the most common.
For reference, here's what an official H!P glow stick looks like:
Posted Image
Basically a standard 6" stick with a sponge handle.

Each Morning Musume member has her own official color, and this applies to glow sticks as well.
- Takahashi Ai - Yellow
- Niigaki Risa - Green
- Kamei Eri - Orange
- Michishige Sayumi - Pink
- Tanaka Reina - Light blue
- Kusumi Koharu - Red
- Mittsui Aika - Purple
- JunJun - Navy blue
- LinLin - Turquoise
You are only obligated to hold up glow sticks that represent the members that you like. If you can find a way to hold up all nine colors, more power to you.

Where to buy glow sticks?

* Anime Expo will be selling glow sticks at their merchandise booth, which will be located across the lobby from the exhibits hall in the south tower lobby.
If they don't run out of stock by the time of the concert, they will also sell during the concert line up.
Pricing will be $2 each or $5 for 3 sticks.
They are offering only blue, purple, green, yellow, and red.

The JapanFiles booth will also have glow sticks for sale, $1 to $3 each. They will have aqua, blue, green, orange, red, white, yellow, and tri-Color *

Party stores, dollar stores, major chain store (Walmart, Target, Home depot, etc), and specialty online stores all sell glow sticks.
Make sure you buy ones that will last the duration of the concert. High intensity glow sticks are not recommended.

If you are unable to purchase glow sticks before heading to the concert, a few members here have extra ones that you may use.
Please check the thread MORNING MUSUME at Anime Expo (LA) to find more details on who to contact.

Please be responsible with your glow sticks and not throw them at other people or leave it on the ground during or after the concert.

Other things to bring

Refreshment
It's important to prevent dehydration.
Bottled water and energy drinks are recommended, as AX allows unopened pet bottles inside concerts.

Personal hygiene items
Have a towel to wipe off your sweat.
Bring extra clothes just in case.

Sunblock lotion / Hats / Sunglasses
Los Angeles is very hot during July. Just in case you have to line up outdoors, protect yourself from the sun and the heat.

Cash
Although most places accepts credit and debit cards, it is still a good idea to have some cash for those cash only places.

Before the concert

Buying Morning Musume official merchandises
Up-Front/JapanFiles/JPopHouse will each have a booth at AX to sell official Morning Musume merchandises.

Here are some prices:
Hangry&Angry - Kill Me Kiss Me = $15
Morning Musume - PLATINUM 9 DISC = $20
Morning Musume - Shouganai Yume Oibito = $15

There will also be photo sets and t-shirts for sale.

At the Morning Musume concert

Finally, it's the main event. You've waited so long just for this, but how do you maximize your time here and put all your preparation to good use?
There are various things you should and shouldn't do at a Morning Musume concert.

Things you should do

Be polite and courteous
Please be respectful to staff and other members of the audience. Please try not to swear, you are not attending a heavy metal concert.

Follow the rules
Obey all rules outlined by the organizers.
If AX says no taking pictures and videos during the concert, they mean it. Put away your camera unless you want to get kicked out.

Call and respond with Morning Musume
Morning Musume always want the audience to show enthusiasm during high energy songs.
When tensions are high, they even give signs for the crowd to scream and jump.
Give them proper response when they are interacting with us.

Cheering / Chants
A Morning Musume concert is not a concert without the fans getting in on the act.
General rule of thumb for cheering: Cheer loudly during fast and upbeat songs, but be quiet during MC segments and slow ballad songs.
During slow songs such as Ame no Furanai Hoshi de wa Aisenai Darou, please remain quiet so everyone in the audience can listen to the song clearly.
Waving your hands/glow sticks in the air to the beat during ballad songs is recommended.
Try not to yell or scream when people on stage are speaking, wait until they are finish with their sentence/speech.

For specific instructions regarding chants to each particular Morning Musume song, please refer to next post.

Asking for encore
At the end of the concert, after the group has left the stage, it is the best time to ask for an encore.
Typically at a Morning Musume concert, fans will call out an encore chant.
An-ko-ru, pronounced "Ang-call-lu".
Fans usually repeat this chant until Morning Musume returns to the stage.
