So many great girls ranked down like Miorin, Ami, Rabutan, Mariko-sama and Haruka etc... yet so many ranked up like MY BABIES YUKO AND SASSHI! Juritan beat Rena which is amazing and Ayaka and Yui finally ranked.

It was a tough fight between Yuki and Mayu. I love both of them, but is happy with the results that Mayu is 2nd. It was expected of Yuko to be there, so there wasnt much tension once 2nd place was announced. Quite a number of unexpected things though. Many members dropped. Others went up suddenly. Overall was a great election. (If Yuko graduates, the ranking will be too predictable and that there will be no more tension in the elections (except for maybe the 5th - 10th spots)

The victory for Yuko seems empty because there's no one that can compete with her....

this is my first senbatsu, so i'm a little lost. this is a vote to see who gets on the next single? and why is it important? i mean, these girls get downright emotional with the tears and snots all over the place.

Senbatsu = Those who are in lineup for the single they are selling, i.e., singing and dancing - for PV and music shows / events. Before senbatsu was split in half with "media line", making those who fell below this line, even though in senbatsu, not eligible for TV show appearances etc.

Now it's only senbatsu, from 1 to 16. Then there's Undergirls, these girls will form lineup for first c/w track. And here we have an additional two groups in Next Girls and Future Girls, who will also get a song of their own.

Then there's lots of media tie-ins with each level here, for all four, various magazine shoots, TV appearances, and so on.

Why is this important?

Well for one it is a huge event where fans gets to show their love to their oshimen by way of voting for them. And it's very important for most of the girls. Knowing you have fans that can vote for you, and make you place, is something that most girls wants. They're all idols so it's only natural that they have a wish of ranking or better yet; ranking high.

It opens opportunities for the girls who ranks higher as it means more promotional work, and so on.

To me it's both awesome and a little sad at the same time. It's awesome due to many reasons, but also sad because not everybody can rank, so some will always be left out, and there are MANY many great girls there who do not rank yet deserves to. And that to me is depressing, but everybody cannot be winners so...

But all in all, it's important because of the fan/idol symbiosis that AKB48 has been a part of since day one. Lots of emotions from both girls and fans :)

@drahzaar: i've seen these videos from the past. it's nothing different. when Yuko won the first time, it was really awesome because everyone expected Maeda to win. And when you are able to take down the ace, that means something. but this year was no surprise who was gonna be No# 1. ( and it wasn't even close ). I'll care more when this thing becomes more than a one-horse race....

@GEL For this election was also stablished that all girls will be rewarded, the nex 127 girls that did not rank will still get a reward in the form of at least one page of a magazine appereance, so they will still get to be in photo sessions and get advertised, one page in one magazine might seem like nothing, but if you make it count it could mean quite a lot and get a push up in the ranks!

^maybe next year when she creams the competition again it wont mean as much but this time being her moment to take over there was definitely no "emptiness" when she went up there.

Sashihara, Kasai, Mayu, Takamina and Wasamin are all making me happy here =)
It was a very tense senbatsu up to 3rd place when Kashiwagi was called out before Mayu and then ended on kind of an anticlimax though. It was so obviously Yuko's win from the word go.

@Glasseyelashes
Let's not forget that this is an ingenious way to make money for the company :-)
I was wondering why my Japanese friend had bought dozens of the same single (he sent me some) until I learned that there are the voting tickets in them, :-)))

But I guess Oshima would have won in any case...

This looks about as expected. Great! The only thing a little odd is Sashi's meteoric rise. Which is better than great!!

Oh... and it would have been fabulous if Matsuda Shiori had made a spot in the list. Any spot. But that's OK. She'll be on top soon enough.

After seeing that AKB documentary I felt very angry about why the company would do this cause although some of the girls can know that they have a lot of support, it's also a sure-fire way for people to know that they DON'T have much support which is pretty sad.. It just makes everyone within AKB almost have to compete (and in the doc, they mentioned how they had mixed feelings about it)
But I'm sure they're past it since they've done a few times before, and it does seem like it fluctuates, like, some go down and some go up.

I'm also happy for Takamina, Yukirin, and all the new girls that I'm sure are happy they ranked :)
I also hope that with this it helps me get to know all these girls a bit better ^^

I always find the results of these things interesting being a H!P fan primarily. Only one U18 in the entire popular girl lineup, average age ~21. The general population really seems to have very different tastes as opposed to hardcore idol otakus.

^ But these elections are mainly about hard core otakus that can afford to buy a lot of CDs...

 Potassium Bicarbonate
 2012-06-11 18:17
No they're not at all. One vote per CD, 1.2 million votes was it? Hardcore otaku influence is very minimal at the top considering the sheer volume of votes.

Hmm... but the top 16 girls have been quite stable since the first election when Acchan won with a total of 4630 votes, Oshima 2nd with 3345 votes, well before the general population even cared for AKB48. So hardcore otakus and the general population seems to agree.

If you're already established and well-known, it's hard to fall from grace.

Majority of those who votes for "unknown" girls are those who knows much about the girls. The easy choice is to vote for Yuko, Yukirin, etc.

Not that many from general population who thinks that they should vote for Kaotan, Kris, Shihorin, Chiichan, Micha, Mikitty etc.

But it's good that election is expanded to include 64 girls now, more publicity for those elected.

 stany
 2012-06-11 23:31
Those "unknown" girls got only 30% of all votes together. Senbatsu members got the rest. Considering as general public people who bought max one copy of each edition + they're not members of the fanclubs, they could make at max half of that.
