The lineup for the 71st NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen has been announced: Nogizaka46 and all Sakamichi Series groups are confirmed, but no groups from Hello! Project, and most surprisingly, no AKB48 or 48 Group at all.

This is Hello! Project's 12th year since they were last invited, with Morning Musume making their final appearance in 2008. More notably, all of 48 Group do not appear in this year's Kouhaku, a first for the franchise since AKB48's debut performance in 2009. In contrast, all Sakamichi Series groups were confirmed to appear on the show, with Sakurazaka46 (formerly known as Keyakizaka46) making their debut appearance.

Many AKB48 members have taken to social media to apologize for failing to appear at Kouhaku. Yamauchi Mizuki, the center of AKB48's recent single "Shitsuren, Arigato", tweeted that she is "filled with regret" that she couldn't carry on AKB48's legacy at Kouhaku. In addition, Mukaichi Mion, AKB48's general manager, apologized for failing their seniors and their legacy in the past two years (likely referencing the 2019 NGT48 assault scandal), and wishes to create a new legacy in the future.

While all of 48 Group will be missing Kouhaku, all of 46G will be attending. This is Nogizaka46's 6th consecutive year appearing since 2015, while this will be Hinatazaka46's 2nd consecutive year attending since 2019. This will be Sakurazaka46's debut appearance, though they appeared as Keyakizaka46 from 2016 to 2019.

While AKB48 and Hello! Project will not be appearing, NiziU and BABYMETAL will be making their debut appearances this Kouhaku. Though BABYMETAL debuted in 2010, this is their first appearance on the program, whereas NiziU is still a pre-debut group, and will likely make their debut in 2021. Additionally, K-Pop group TWICE will not be appearing this year, likely due to travel restrictions as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
