Apparently the popularity of FujiTV's show Maniac Gran Prix featuring gaijin fans has sparked the interested of other TV producers. NTV will air a new show where gaijins are pitted against Japanese people on various Japanese things, and for their first show they want to bring in AKB48 fans.
I have been contact directly to help find people so that might be the reason you haven't seen this anywhere else. But here is a Craigslist ad for the show.
This is the info I have:
Show: BATTLE: JAPAN ALL STARS (tentatively)
Station: NTV (日テレ)
Concept: Song intro battle, dance choreography battle, idols trivia. (tentatively)
Contestants: 3 Hardcore Japanese fans (might change) vs 3 Hardcore Gaijin fans
Shooting: 1st of October to 5th of October. (this means you need to be available from September 29th to October 6th)
Airing: November (on a sunday. Unknown date)
Budget: Travel and hotel will be paid (most likely food too, but couldn't confirm it yet). No further compensation due to limited budget.
Deadline: 8th of September
This show is about pitting gaijins against the Japanese. So its not about showcasing fans unlike the other show. In the same episode there will be a sushi eating contest (with a different set of people, of course).
They want hardcore fans who are able to answer tough questions.
The format might change if they feel gaijin fans wouldn't stand much of a chance against the Japanese fans.
THERE ARE ONLY 3 SPOTS FOR CONTESTANTS!
BEING ABLE TO SPEAK JAPANESE IS A MUST.
The contact person lives in LA, so they will prefer people within the US, because they can go to your place and shoot an introduction video, but they are also interested in adding people from Asia.
IF YOU LIVE IN JAPAN ITS EVEN BETTER BECAUSE THEY CAN SAVE MONEY!
Other countries might also have a shot if you prove you are hardcore enough.
How to apply: Send your real name, picture of yourself and of your swag (1 picture is enough) to Hiroki Shirota. No long-winded story needed.
How to increase your chances: Get your AKB knowledge up, not just trivia but choreography and songs too. That is all that matters this time and they will quiz you to see if you are suited. They are looking for people with different specialties, so if you can cover one of the bases then you have a chance in.
