Ikuta Erina to leave Hello!Project and join AKB48 April Fools~
  Hello!Project Written by Kuno , updated: 7:16, 1-Apr 2011

"I was too shy to tell anyone!"

Newly-added Morning Musume member Ikuta Erina has chosen to leave Morning Musume and Hello!Project before she makes her professional debut with MoMusu's upcoming track "Maji Desu ka Ska!" It turns out that the sheepish Ikuta thought she was auditioning for Japan's current top idol group AKB48. "I entered the wrong place at the wrong time, and here I am," Ikuta says in a new interview with Sponichi Annex. "A friend told me she saw the line for idol auditions and I just assumed it was for AKB48."

One month after becoming a member, Ikuta had an epiphany. "Things were going well until late January when I started learning the choreography for "Love Machine". Now I knew that wasn't an AKB48 song, and I started getting worried. Since I'm helplessly shy and not very assertive, I couldn't bring myself to admit to the staff that I never meant to audition for Morning Musume."

Ikuta wasn't the only one to be fooled

"Everyone I tell this story to is shocked that I never noticed the audition wasn't for AKB48, but to be honest, there were quite a few girls there who were hoping to get into AKB48 as well. It's all they were talking about!"

One of those girls was another 9th gen Musume, Sayashi Riho. Unlike Ikuta, Sayashi has decided to continue on as a Morning Musume. "Sure, I was disappointed at first," she admits. "But I have a feeling I'll be able to take over the center position in Morning Musume much faster than I would have in AKB48. That's my goal. I already sing and dance better than any member, past or present. And I'm like 12 or something. I'm a natural."

Continuing her story, Ikuta recalls what she went through once she made her fateful discovery. "I couldn't tell management or the other members, but I wanted to fulfill my dream of becoming an AKB48 member. So, I've been meeting with AKB management throughout the month of March. We finally came to an agreement today that I would be joining as a 12th gen kenkyuusei (research student). I'm so happy!"

Akimoto weighs in

AKB48's prolific producer Akimoto Yasushi was interviewed about the situation as well. "Some might wonder why we agreed to take on Ikuta Erina after a situation such as this. What people don't understand is that it's AKS policy to take in any stray teenage girls and offer them a position in one of our 73 specialized cash-generation units." Akimoto later clarified that those 73 units were groups such as SDN48, Queen & Elizabeth, Natto Angels, Funky Socks, Chocolove, DiVA, and No Sleeves.

A staff member pointed out to Akimoto that the group Funky Socks doesn't actually exist.

Morning Musume's producer Tsunku was both dumbfounded and flabbergasted upon hearing the news. "It's definitely disappointing, but I blame myself for not speaking clearly most of the time. It's possible that she misheard me at the auditions. If I'm being completely honest, my wife also thinks I work for AKB48. It's a common misconception these days."
