Rollin Wang: 'Chick Chick' Today, I’d like to address a Chinese singer, Rollin Wang. For a while, I’ve been wondering about pop music in China. I mean, mainland China, not Taiwan. The only girl group from mainland China that I have come across is SNH48, the sister group of AKB48. SNH48 has a MV for ‘Heavy Rotation’ that I like a lot. Anyway, while SNH48 is a Chinese group, singing in Mandarin, I consider them to be a special case. That is, I’m sure they got (are getting?) a lot of help from Japanese producers, arrangers, promoters, composers, lyricists, etc., due to the fact that they are part of the AKB ‘family.’

It was in this context that I ran across the MV of ‘Chick Chick’ by Rollin Wang (sometimes I see her name written ‘Rong Rollin Wang.’) I’m sure you know about the world-famous MV for ‘Gangnam Style’ that catapulted Korean rapper Psy into superstardom. After ‘Gangnam Style’ came another internet-friendly MV called ‘What Does the Fox Say?’ by Norwegian comedy duo Ylvis. (In case you haven’t see the MV for ‘What Does the Fox Say?,’ you should check it out. It was the #1 trending video on YouTube in 2013.) It turns out that all the commentators pointed out the similarities between ‘What Does the Fox Say’ and ‘Chick Chick’ by Rollin Wang. Personally, I don’t see the similarities, beyond the fact that they both have animals in them. I guess the fact that ‘Chick Chick’ came out a year after ‘What Does the Fox Say?’ and it was a viral video made people compare the two songs/videos. ‘Chick Chick’ came out around Nov., 2014, and I regret that I have only recently discovered it.

OK, so why am I writing a post about ‘Chick Chick’ by Rollin Wang? It is a great video. They make very good use of animation as well as dance. The singer, Rollin Wang, is charismatic and cute. She doesn’t sing much, mostly it is just her making a chicken sound, or at least the Chinese version of a chicken sound (‘Ko Ko Te! Ko Ko Ko Ko Te!’) The music is catchy . . . an earworm. There are male dancers and female dancers. In a way, the MV for ‘Chick Chick’ reminds me of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s videos. Both have shirtless male dancers , wearing masks, and a lot of (how do I say it) trippy imagery. The creative people really did a good job on the video. I didn’t think the mainland Chinese had it in them. I highly recommend watching the MV for ‘Chick Chick’ by Rollin Wang.

By the way, Rollin Wang has been active for several years now. She was born Dec. 24, 1980, which would make her 35 as I write this. Apparently, she achieved stardom in China with a song she released in 2002. She has even earned a limited following in Hong Kong. As I mentioned above, she is cute. She has a nice body, too, with a narrow waist and nice legs. Her looks would make her fit right in with the members of K-pop girl group SNSD. She does a good job dancing in the MV for ‘Chick Chick.’ I like her facial expressions, too. She has some other singles with MVs, which I was going to cover in this post. It is getting pretty long, though, so I think I will save that for a future post. If you like Rollin Wang or have anything to add about her, I’d like to hear from you in the comments.

To let you know, SNH48 is no longer part of the AKB48 family
