Ichii Sayaka interview with Yahoo! Japan
  Hello!Project Written by B.Slade & Kuno , updated: 18:36, 19-Oct 2009

On August 30, former Morning Musume member Ichii Sayaka made her show business return after nearly five years, on TBS' information variety show "Sunday Japon". Websites were abuzz with comments like "She's even cuter than before", "Sexy", and "We've been waiting for you, Kaa-san!"

And now our editorial department has taken the opportunity to get an interview with "Kaa-san" to celebrate the occasion! While reeling from the shock of her far more adult expressions and actions compared to the past, we asked all about her work and her private life!

- First, congratulations on your comeback! And, welcome back. Everybody has been waiting for your return.

Ichii Sayaka: Thank you very much. That makes me happy.

- After a five-year absence, you made your return in August. It's been about a month and a half since then, so how has it been?

Ichii: Because of that five year blank, I was pretty unsure. But the old sensations are slowly coming back to me. And on top of that, I'm in the process of finding a new me.

- Mentally speaking, and in other ways, how have you changed since then?

Ichii: In those five years, I got married and had kids. In particular, I'd say I've grown a lot from raising them. Also, I was active in groups in the past, but now I'm completely solo. So now, I feel a greater sense of responsibility with every job compared to the past.

- Did you devote yourself entirely to motherhood over the five years?

Ichii: That's right. Of course I've been taking my kids to the park, going on trips, and going out a lot more than I used to. Also, for a while I was working in a clothing shop. I liked a lot of the clothing there, so I was doing it to learn more about colour and design. Since giving birth, I've had a reawakened interest in always wanting to look young, and enjoying style and makeup.

- So, when did you first start thinking about making your comeback?

Ichii: About two years after giving birth, I slowly started to have more free time. And at one point, I started thinking if there was anything I'd left undone in my life. That's when I realised I still hadn't taken on the challenge of stage acting. Of course, I love to sing too, but I want to try out new fields that I've never experienced. And at the beginning of this year, I started taking acting lessons and other preparations for my comeback.

- How did you get interested in stage acting?

Ichii: I think that a lot of actresses get more and more beautiful as they get older. And being an actress lets you make use of lots of different experiences and expressions. So I think, it's great, it's something I want to do.

- I see. So, you'll be mainly focusing on acting work from now on.

Ichii: Yeah. Of course if I get the chance, I'd like to sing again!

- I'd like to talk about your past now. I wonder what your reasons were for your original retirement. You retired twice while you were still in your teens, both from Morning Musume, and from Ichii Sayaka in Cubic-Cross. What was that first retirement about?

Ichii: Yeah... For Petitmoni, I got my hair cut short, and now that I think about it, that was a turning point in my life. Not just on the outside, but change started happening inside as well, and I started getting hold of music, and books I'd never read. As that was happening, I developed a hunger. I wanted to do more on my own. So, I graduated.

- Back then, Morning Musume was at the top of the idol world, so how did the people around you react?

Ichii: Everybody told me, "It's such a waste." But the feeling of "I want to do it" was huge. Actually in those days, I was so busy every day that I didn't have any sensation of being at the top of the idol world (lol)

- After that, you married and had children, and you've been able to return to work well... But aren't your days busy?

Ichii: No, every day is fun. I love my kids, and I love work, and everyone around me gives me so much support.

- Do your children realise it when they see Ichii active on TV?

Ichii: I wonder... I have a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old, and a while back the oldest one suprised me by suddenly saying, "Ichii Sayaka!" How did he know my stage name? (lol)

- I see, because you would have changed your last name when you married (lol). Incidentally, have you met up with the old Morning Musume members since your return?

Ichii: I haven't been able to at all! Tsuji-chan was at the Tokyo Girls Collection, but I didn't get to see her. Gomaki was at another event with me, but we didn't get to talk... But I was really happy to read Yagucchan's (Yaguchi Mari) comments of support. If I get the chance, I'd like to meet up with the old members again.

- Do you watch the current Morning Musume?

Ichii: Not at all... So, I don't know any of the current members personally. In my mind, the image of "Morning Musume = The old members" is very strong. Really, for me, the old Morning Musume is full of the memories of my youth, so it's something important to me.

- Finally, please tell me your goals for the future.

Ichii: I want to be an actress that everyone admires. Right now I'm in talks with a lot of different people, so I want to try all kinds of things, like dramas and stage plays. Please give your support to this new Ichii Sayaka, different from before!
