In Topic: The freeware thread

23 November 2009 - 11:41 PM

Hey everyone,

since a while now I have been interested in freeware that is helpfull for your PC and/or can replace software you have to buy. So I'll make a list of some freeware I like a lot, and I hope that we'll gather a lot of handy stuff in this thread. So I don't want anything that has to be cracked, everything must be totally legal and free of use (no shareware either).

Operating Systems
Ubuntu (Linux)
This is a great OS with a graphical user interface everyone can get used to. It's 100% free and in the near future it'll contain full support in a Windows network

Web Browsers
Firefox
The most famous free browser available, I recommend using this browser together with an addon called "Noscript" and "AdBlockPlus" for optimal security, I haven't seen any spyware on my pc since I used it
Opera
I've been trying this for a couple of weeks now, and I must say I love this browser, it has some handy features like the "Magic Wand" which makes you able to log in on a site with just one click

Office Applications
Open Office
Open Office is the most famous freeware office, it includes all the important apps (word/excel/powerpoint etc.)

Media Tools
CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)
Most codec packs are just a bunch of codecs gathered and because of that two codecs can conflict eachother. CCCP is especially built so that this won't happen. It includes all the major video and audio codecs so you can play almost everything when this pack is installed
VLC Media Player
This media player plays about EVERYTHING, it's usable on almost every OS including Windows Mac and Linux and you don't need to download additional codecs!
VirtualDubMod
Tool to edit media files. Can cut and join video pieces, extract video and audio streams, and even encode video's if you have the proper codecs installed.
ImgBurn
Burning application specifically designed to burn images such as ISO's to disc. Can also create the ISO from files.
Aegisub
Subtitle application. Create subs, do timing, and even typesetting.
KMPlayer
Lightweight video and audio player similar to VLC in that it uses built in codecs. More customizable and supports external codecs if you choose to use them instead.
GSpot
Tool used to determine a files audio and video bitrate, frames, codecs used/required, and other technical information.
WinAmp
Winamp is a mediaplayer specialized in music and music playlist. In my opinion it's better than iTunes
SUPER
This program can convert about any media type to any other media type
Foobar2000
An open-source audio player, kinda like the Linux of audio players. There are tons of possibilities for customization, and it's not necessary for you to know how to script (although that would be ideal). Also one of the lightest audio players in terms of system resources usage - provided you don't load it up with too many plugins.
Media Player Classic
A nice, light media player. Ideal for watching videos. (it's also included in CCCP)
Irfanview
Fast, compact image viewer.

Windows tools
Process Explorer
This program is an advanced version of your task manager, you can see everything that's running, what other programs they use... I think you can see almost everything that's going on in your PC, hehe. It's very handy if you are a little more advanced with Windows.
Daemon Tools Lite
If you have ISOs or other cd/dvd images, Daemon Tools can mount them to make it look like they are cds/dvds in a dvd player. Which means you don't have to burn the cds/dvds to play them or install the software. Very handy if you work a lot with images
1-4a Renamer
This tool can rename multiple files at once, very handy when you download anime or doramas and you just want the name of the series and the episode number as the filename. one click on the button and all files are renamed at once!
ShellExView
for finding and disabling unwanted/useless/buggy third party shell extensions.
WinDirStat
for visualizing disk usage.
VirtuaWin
virtual desktop manager.
UltraVNC
This allows you to take over your pc from another PC

Portable Apps (for USB flash disk)
PortableApps
You can download many apps here including firefox and openoffice and you don't have to install them. If you put them on your USB flash disk it'll work on any PC with Windows

Security
No apps yet

Other
Notepad++
Notepad++ is an advanced version of the Notepad you can find in Windows, it works with color codes and recognizes a lot of programming languages including PHP, (x)HTML, SQL and many many more. It's really small and doesn't take long to load.
Utorrent
Lightweight and efficient BitTorrent client.

I'm sure I know some more freewares but for now this is it. I hope we can expand this list together

I agree with you, I use crunchbang linux as my system...very cool, minimalist, stable,n fast , wow is it real that you use ubuntu ? sorry I meant most of the girls in my country don't know anything about linux (ubuntu) ;) now we're talking ,is it only you or any other member use ubuntu? :)
