Do groups need lead singers?

25 March 2010 - 03:19 AM

Last night I was watching a H!P concert, and as usual getting frustrated about the line distribution like I always do. I think it's fair to say that in Momusu, Ai & Reina take the majority of the lines, and in C-ute, Airi and arguably Maimi take the majority. Berryz have it a bit better - Risako, Momoko & Miyabi take the main lines, and usually the other members get one or two solos - the same can't be said for Momusu & C-ute

I began to wonder, is it necessary for these groups to have main singers, who get the leads on almost every single? What's the point of not equalizing line distribution?

Personally, I think for a group like Momusu they kind of do need main singers. Because the lineup is always changing, casual fans (Wait, are there any casual H!P fans?) need to have some consistency and be able to recognize at least a couple members. Since their admission to the group, Ai and Reina have almost always been given strong, memorable parts of singles. It's clear that the fate of Ai will eventually be graduation, so now we're seeing Eri being slowly moved up on the totem pole in terms of lines.

For stable groups like Berryz and C-ute, I think the distribution should be more equal. Membership to those groups seems to be permanent, so why is there no equality?

Also, a new H!P group is about to debut, how do you expect the line distribution of S/mileage to be? Personally, I think there's a chance it'll be fair with no clear lead singer.
