Since I know nothing about this Produce 101 program. Somebody explain it. Is it some sort of contest? Will a group be formed? What happened to past members?

Also to explain on the previous seasons of the Produce 101 Japan two male groups were form which are permanent and active. So season 3 will be the first to form a permanent female unit exclusively, promoting in Japan plus could go global as well. 
 

While on the original Korean version of the seasons are structured a little differently and the male and female groups were only temporary which would only be active for 2 years approximately. I hope that helps!
