For me... I use multiple software that supports low-end non-HD netbook...
These programmes allow me to encode the finishing video in HD format even though my netbook don't internally support HD...
Editor:
1. VideoPad Video Editor (Basic)
Can use custom filters, cropping, can load several videos, audios, pictures to merge into one video, 3D support
Used it most of the times, but I don't have money to buy Professional edition
Converter:
1. DVDVideoSoft
Just using the AVI converter in it to convert FRAPS files into DivX files...
1. Aegisub
To make fansub (subtitles) by typing...
2. VirtualDubMod
To combine subtitles into AVI videos permanently
3. MeGUI
To combine subtitles into MP4 videos permanently (as I can't use VirtualDubMod for MP4 for unknown reason)
To rip content from ISO
4. MKVmerge
To combine subtitles and any videos becomes MKV videos (softsub)
Misc:
1. Fraps
To record game screenplay (the result files are big)
2. Bandicam
To record desktop activities
Bye-bye:
Windows Live Movie Maker (it's the Windows 7 version of WMM... not used anymore because it sucks... )
As my files were all downloaded from internet, I didn't have any ripper...

- AviDemux (x264, vine)
- FFMPEG (command line tool) (x264/x265)
- VidCoder (Handbrake encoding engine) (x264/x265)
also installed but rarely used:
- XMedia Recode
- meGUI
splitting files:
- mkvmerge (to remux yt videos/add chapters)
- tsmuxer
cutting:
- AviDemux
- FFMPEG (command line tool)
- Mpg2Cut2 (for some broken transport streams)
joining videos/adding subs/change container
- FFMPEG (command line tool)
to change the container of a mkv with 2 audiotracks to mp4 :
- Video Container Changer (with the new FFMPEG ver, the included ver. does not work)
