Popularity might be one reason, but it's also the air around that person I think. Kawamuu is seen as someone who works incredibly hard - that's one of the reasons why she became Anju's sub-leader. In the little talking part she said she practiced every day for that performance, renting a studio from 7am in the morning. The other reason might be that she not simply covered the song: She made it her own, while still showing a different side of herself. In total it was a really well constructed performance that added something new to an already popular song.

 

I was also surprised that some well done classic idol performances, like Ruru, Moe and Yuhane, weren't in the top 5, but Kawamuu is such a nice surprise.

Also, I think when it comes to girls like Masaki, Sakura and Sayuki, we might be used to them doing well already. (I do think Sayuki fell a bit flat here though, she sang well but didn't really deliver the feeling of the song.) The element of surprise is definitely another point. Regarding this, the bigger surprise is that Riko didn't make it into the top 5

I don't think popularity is the big factor. Surely it is one of the factor determining the winner, but that's not all. If popularity is the big factor, you'll see Maa-chan being on top 5 list. Maa-chan is popular both within H!P and outside H!P. Kawamuu is certainly popular within H!P, but there are 2 other factors that help her win. First, it's the choice of the song. It's one of songs which rhetorically attract audiences. Remember the 2018 Halo Fes? People discussed how Odasaku - Sayubee duo didn't win, but Crazy Heart's Maachan-Saorin did. A key was the choice of the song. It hyped up the fans. Then, the second factor is uniqueness - creativity. Through Sunao ni amaete, she adds something really unique: tap dance. It sounds strange, but from what I saw, it worked.

 

This explains why not even Ruru, Odasaku or Yuhane were in top 5. Their popularity within H!P is not bad, their singing level is at the top. However, their choices of songs were inappropriate, because there was nothing that made people go "WOW" and the songs downplayed their skills. Rikoriko, Layla, Rio, Maopin and Mizuho, all of them had amazing performances. Unfortunately, their popularity within H!P is still meh, so they didn't make into the top 5. The reason why popularity inside H!P isn't the big factor referred to Maa-chan's case: her choice of songs and her performance were meh compared to her usual level.

 

If you look at top 5, they all had high creativity - uniqueness in their performances. The choice of songs fitted each performer's skills. And last, their popularity within H!P also determined the ranks. Oh, I also forgot that fans' requests determined the winners indirectly. The choice of songs and the number of choices could be another key.

I don't know about you guys, but Riko's performance made me a tad uncomfortable to watch. It was borderline Maki Goto's "slutty"-sexy phase. I don't know is it because of the outfit that she wore VS the dance routine, it didn't sit right with me.

 

I didn't watch the full show. Started watching from Kaga's performance onwards towards the end (because I forgot it was on), and watched some selected performances uploaded on social media after the show.

I think I do agree that in order to stand a chance to win, the girls need to do something original/special (in a good way) to set themselves apart from the "standard" performances. It is not enough just to have a good voice or have an amazing dance routine. It's the overall package. I don't like Kiyono as a member, but her performance was really original and it does set her apart from her peers like Yuhane etc.

 

But of course there are some WTF moments like Saorin's selfies, Erina's ramen-eating and Yume's octopus-"infested" theme. But at least they tried to incorporate their personalities into the performances.

I hope H!P will consider doing this in some capacity, but for god sake, let the girls dress themselves instead letting them wear concert/single promo outfits, because some of the outfits just don't match the songs they are performing and it's pretty jarring.

 

And I would have loved if they change the voting system. Consider putting a voting panel consists of "professional" jury, the girls themselves and the fans. Then rank their top 10 performances (with an inversely-correlated point system), something similar to Eurovision to decide the winner instead of just a single vote. That would have made things more interesting.

I'm absolutely with you on the outfits. Riko suffered terribly under this - she looked like a granny trying to be sexy imo Mao was also restrained by her outfit. And while I loved Beyooooonds' jackets the white miniskirts where limiting them in terms of movement, too.

LOL! Not granny, but more like a kindergarten/primary school teacher attempting a sexy dance routine. If she was in "Just Try" single outfit, it would have been alright.

Kawamuras first place is so well deserved! I'm suprised how well she is singing and a vit sad that angermes songs dont really use and reflect her abilities plus the tap dance was awesome.
I also loved rurus performance. The energy of her performances is like she is exploading on the stage.
I'm disappointed by Sakuras performance. I think she rotally chose the wrong song. Idk but while she became much better since she debuted even her first performances in morning musume had more emotion to them. Not that this hasn't had them but she could have done and would have been able to do much better.

I guess that Odasaku didn't even try her best in the performance. I'm sorry to say this, I usually watch the performances wholeheartedly, but I stopped watching that performance just after 10 seconds.

That’s not exactly true. Sakura herself said on Morning Jogakuin recently that she wasn’t satisfied with her performance and that she thought that she could’ve done better and wanted to try again:

Speaking from my own personal experience with anxiety it can have a pretty negative effect on the things you’re normally really good even when you’re trying your best, so I’m not surprised that it seemed like she wasn’t even trying during her SoloFes performance despite this being far from the case. The good news is that she also said that she plans on regaining her confidence in her singing as soon as possible, so if SoloFes becomes an annual event hopefully we’ll see a more confident Sakura singing and performing next year if not sooner

Finally got time to watch the whole thing. I love every individual performance. 

Kawamuu's win was deserving, she put in so much effort.

But yeah they should've been able to pick their own outfits instead of having group outfits. They weren't doing any group performance so why the group outfits. The show was suppose to be about the individual.

Honestly this was the best thing H!P has done since Team Taikou Uta Gassen. I watched the live stream, and those 5 hours were the most fun I've had in quite a while. Honestly, kudos to the management for coming up with this idea.

 

I must say that I was impressed by every single performance, it's incredibly hard for me to choose a favorite, and I can imagine it was hard for the girls to vote as well. Everyone clearly prepared a lot for their performance, and all of them displayed so much individuality and talent. There were definitely several standout performances, but each and every one was enjoyable to me. I have no qualms with the top 5, and Kawamuu had an outstanding performance, I am happy she took the MVP award.

 

Seeing the many fan reactions, it seems like this was a good chance for fans, who are not familiar with every H!P member or every group, to get to know everyone. I hope the management will capitalize on it and make Solo Fes into a yearly event.
