Let's share some music from the Golden Age of Idols in Japan!!

There are a few individual threads for idols like Yamaguchi Momoe, Minamino Youko and Iijima Mari... but since they are dead (the threads lol) I thought I'd revive interest by creating a more general thread. :)

Let's start by introducing some download resources:

http://jpop80ss.blogspot.com
Download 80s idol music here. This website has a MASSIVE collection.

http://fusion-world-30.blogspot.com
Download City Pop Albums here. (a breezy, mellow mixture of smooth jazz and album-oriented rock – often with elements of jazz fusion, jazz-funk, or boogie)

These three famous idols cover the 3 main styles:
Okada Yukiko (ballad song)
Kikuchi Momoko (city pop)

Oginome Yoko (new wave)

Matsuda Seiko is rubbish :P

I like some of Okada Yukiko's stuff, but I don't really know that much about Showa era stuff. Although listening to it, it does have a different sound than what's common today. I'm still slowly exploring that era.

I'm glad to hear that you've found an interest in the music. Hopefully you'll discover an idol that really clicks with you :)

seiyuu/singer Sumire Uesaka put out a decent compilation album of 80s idols a couple of years ago, might serve as a good starting point for some people. also I really appreciate the effort she put into the cover!

Somebody who does really like Seiko. ;)  ...amongst others.

I like Nakamori Akina.

A really good thing for anyone who really wants to explore Showa era Idols or music in general is to just listen to the Oricon yearly top 100 albums from those years. They are definitely available on Jpopsuki.

Thanks so much for sharing that blog post :) I'm a big fan of Karin.

I checked out  'Heart no Earring' and I really liked it. Mayyybe I'll give Seiko another go.

Her discography is massive though, so even though I've hated most of what I've heard so far there might actually be an album/single out there that I'll enjoy.

I'll start with Karin's favourites and see how that goes :P

There's something about Akina's voice that always hooks me  --  I forget how good she is, then I hear her again, and I realize how much warmth, beauty, and emotional power she has.

I've been buying older Jpop at the Los Angeles-area Book-Offs for the past ten years or so (for quite a while, they were selling 80s and 90s CDs and VHS tapes for pocket change, so I grabbed whatever looked interesting), but I feel like I've barely scratched the surface.

And I find myself drawn to 80s Shizuka:

Aaaannnnd... early Wink (who had so much 80s cool that I even find it kind of intimidating at this late date XD ):

Does anyone know anything about 酒井雅子?
She debuted in 1986 but I can't find anything about her or even any of her songs on youtube...

There's a couple of blog entries but that's all I can find about her. I don't even see any other songs she's done. This single was an theme song single for a movie, 11 piki no neko to ahoudori.

It seems from this, it is the only thing she ever did:

Kawai Naoko performing her debut single "Ooki na Mori no Chiisai no Ouchi" which was released in June 1980.

A truly perfect way to start off the 1980s

荻野目洋子 (Oginome Yōko)

「ダンシング・ヒーロー (Eat You Up)

The single Dancing Hero (Eat You Up) was released by Yōko Oginome in 1985 and it reached #5 on the Oricon weekly chart.

More recently, it reached #2 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart mainly due to a renewed interest generated by the song being used by the Tomioka High School from Osaka in a dance competition.

...and the girl in black is 吉澤瑠莉花 (Yoshizawa Rurika) and happens to be my Fuwa Fuwa oshi.

Yōko Oginome is managed by Rising Productions so it would only be natural for her to do a collaboration with Fairies...

I've gotten into Showa era idols recently, which is something I thought would never happen. I really like Honda Minako, Nakamori Akina and Iwai Sayuri!

Awesome! Iwai Sayuri's song "Boyfriend Sakusen" is one of my favourites! :)

Here's some dude doing a bass cover:

I recently borrowed my friend's bass guitar to figure out how to play Oginome Youko's "Ryuusei Shoujo".

If anyone is interested in learning the song I won't mind tabbing it out for you ;)

I think I might end up buying a bass just to play 80s idol jams hahaha
