C-ute
Most liked: Gamusha LIFE
Least liked: The Middle Management
It’s a close call. Despite Tsugi no Kado wo Magare’s amazing usage of strings and The Middle Management’s frank approach on the modern-day dilemma of work vs love, Gamusha LIFE is my favorite because a) Team C-ute,
cute idol rapping, c) there will just never be enough simple songs about friendship, ever.
Morning Musume ’15
Most liked: Yuugure wa Amegari
Least liked: Ima Koko Kara
Ima Koko Kara is sweet and Seishun Kozou’s “Kuratto kichatte seishun da ne” line was stuck in my head for like an entire week, but Yuugure wa Amegari featuring Fukuchan lead vocals and Maachan piano is a breath of fresh air with lyrics that really hit home.
ANGERME
Most liked: Taikibansei
Least liked: Otome no Gyakushuu
Otome no Gyakushuu is great and has what may be the best title ever (UFP translates it literally as “Counterattack” but it’s probably closer to “Revenge of the Maiden” or “The Girl Strikes Back”—so yes, super horror movie-ish), but Taikibansei is just too catchy.

Most liked: Ca va? Ca va?
Least liked: Wonderful World
Wonderful World is a pretty song with adorable lyrics, but somewhere in the back of my head, I’m always irrationally angry that Sayubee isn’t singing about skies of blue and clouds of white (and the outfits for the song really don’t help
). Ca va? Ca va? has an almost Showa-era sound reminiscent of the golden age of idols and not one, not two, but three catchy hooks all at once. Easily one of my favorite J=J songs in awhile.
Country Girls
Most liked: Itooshikute Gomen ne
Least liked: Koi Dorobou
Cute, nostalgic, and a tongue-in-cheek play on Momo’s Momochi trademark line, Itooshikute Gomen ne is not only the first genuinely cutesy A-side that Cool Hello!’s had in awhile, it’s UFP making sure the group hits the ground running.
Kobushi Factory
Most liked: Survivor
Least liked: Nen ni wa Nen
Nen ni wa Nen’s “nen nen nen” lines make it memorable enough for me (and I love the bridge and chorus separately), but it sounds a little…disjointed somehow? But maybe that’s intentional, given the lyrics. Even so, it’s a solid song and the choreography looks super-fun. Can’t wait to hear this song performed after the members grab more experience under their belts. Survivor is overall just really great, even with the disturbing lyrics and everything. (The “One, you pick a person. Two, the person picked will vanish” creeped me out so much the first time I heard it and a few weeks later, it’s quickly become one of my favorite lines.
) It’s an interesting song to give rookies that have been given so many rivals even before being officially debuted and thrown into the cutthroat entertainment world, so the intellectual factor alone makes it my favorite.
