I know people still express surprise that in 2019 it's Sayumi rather than Reina or Ai that has managed to thus far have the most successful post-H!P solo singing career, but honestly the thing that surprises me is that she managed to have such a strong comeback after taking a hiatus rather than jumping right back into the industry post-grad from MM. The entertainment world moves so fast in Japan, it's a testament to the name recognition Sayu achieved from her TV appearances that she was able to still attract so many advertisers.

Taking a break to possibly spend time with friends and family was the right thing. Even with fans (including me) wanted her to return, it was worth the wait.

Sayumi is still being discussed here than from other MM OG's.

If Sayumi has her own youtube channel or TV show, I'd watch it everyday

On the surface, it might seem odd that Sayu got the solo career instead of Ai or Reina, but with 20/20 hindsight it makes sense. Ai's voice was kind of a mess by the time she graduated (and still is -- H!P overworking her for years when she had such a strong crew around her was unnecessary), and she never had the personality to be a soloist. Putting Reina in a rock band was a great move, because it fit her personality and public persona, but putting her in a band that had no focus or identity beyond Reina Tanaka fronting it was stupid. 

 

However Sayumi, despite her lack of talent, has a magnetic personality and blinding beauty. Other than her singing voice, she was made to be an idol. I can't imagine how massive she would be if she could sing at even an average level.
