• This is a children's book Ayaka often read in elementary school. "I want to do this, I want to do that. I want to make this my own." A cute story full of a girls aspirations and desires. Though it's a series where each volume has one subtitle, the conflicts and troubles of the hero will reach your heart. Every girl has wanting feelings in everyday life; I want to do everything I like and I want everything, but I don't want it halfway. These types of conflicts, jealousy, even envy appears glittery.

2. Gankutsu Hime (岩窟姫) by Kondo Fumie (近藤史恵)
Popular idols, the mystery of suicide. Her best friend, Hasumi, is stunned, but will soon get caught up in a turbulent whirlpool mourning her death. The cause of suicide is left on her blog as Hasumi's bullying. Even though she doesn't remember anything, the manager and fans don't believe her. Hasumi, who lost everything, stands up to prove her innocence. What the girl who discovered the truth of the death of a friend saw.. a mystery of shock.

• The listing on Ayaka's honcierge is for the 2018 bunkoban (small paperback) edition, but in her included photo she's holding the 2015 edition (which may be out of print, as it no longer seems to be listed on the publishers website.)

• She's never mentioned it, but this is a story with the theme of the entertainment world; idols. It's a real mystery novel despite the contrary cute cover. There are points in the setting that seem to go back and forth between real and fantasy. In a sense it's similar to the "Royal Ballet School Diaries" introduced above; a big difference being feeling "girls strength" rather than "girls shining". Girls can make their beautiful appearances ugly and varied as a weapon. You can hold hands with your opponent for your own purpose. There are friendships that do not lose jealousy. Though there may be a muddled image of girls, it is stronger than that. Through the mystery, you feel the strength of girls.

Kanno Yui's long-awaited style book, for the first time in two years. Makeup, beauty, fashion; elements that have shaped her into the present.

• Kanno Yui is a model for "LARME" fashion magazine, and producer of her own cosmetics and apparel brands. She previously modeled for magazines "Hana*chu→" and "Popteen".

• Ayaka says Kanno Yui is like the incarnation of "girly", with a cuteness that hasn't changed over many years and is admired by girls. She has an inquiring mind in regards to makeup and beauty, and is the "Beauty Minister" of the modeling world. (The rest of what she wrote is gibberish to me; something about skin, wearing clothes, and wanting to be that kind of woman one day.)

1. Undead Girl - Murder Farce 1 (アンデッドガール・マーダーファルス 1) by Aosaki Yuugo (青崎有吾)
Vampires, androids, phantom thief, werewolf, ripper, and a great detective. In Europe at the end of the 19th century, where the the fantastic is stirring, a vampire has been stabbed by a silver stake and murdered...!? Called to find a solution is a specialized detective of the "monster incident", and a mysterious young man with a bird cage. A mysterious nightmare-like drama (farce)... It's here!

•  It's been adapted into a manga series under the same title.
 
•  Ayaka became curious after the book was introduced in the planning of a program where she appeared(?) It's a mystery full of fantasy elements. Since the main character can not move, they're carried in a bird cage by a young man. Three people pledge allegiance to the main character and gather information while solving the mystery. It's a fun read that speeds by and leaves you feeling like you want to read the sequel. Though there are many characters, each of them is clearly written and easy to understand; you can read it without fuss.

2. Killing Alice (アリス殺し) by Kobayashi Yasumi (小林泰三)
One after another the inhabitants of Wonderland are being killed. The murders are shared by multiple people in their dreams, and each time a suspicious death occurs in the real world. Follow the bizarre adventure of "Alice" as she goes back and forth between reality and nightmare.

•  Originally published in 2013. Appeared on several popularity lists, won a 1st place literary bookstore grand prize.
•  Translated into Korean and French (maybe more, but those are the two I could find).
 
•  "Alice", expected of being a criminal in the dream world, exposed to the dangers of death, works hard in the real world to solve the mystery. The truth and the culprit is exposed little by little, though not the way you'd expect. The ending was a surprise. Ayaka recommends the sequel too (クララ殺し; Killing Clara).

• Though it's categorized as a Young Adult novel, Ayaka thinks it can be enjoyed by a wide array of people. The main character is a cool girl who keeps to herself named Lumikki. Not only in Japanese novels, but in other mediums like animation, manga, and dramas, the heroine is cheerful and is usually meant to be loved by everyone. In this book you can enjoy a different type of heroine from those often seen in Japan.

Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced, single mother who thought she had finally escaped her abusive ex-husband Togashi. When he shows up on her doorstep threatening violence and extortion, he ends up dead on her floor. Her neighbor Ishigami, middle-aged high school math teacher, offers help in disposing of the body and plotting a cover-up. • Ayaka likes that Higashino's work is a "standard" place, and that even his originality has become standard (easy to pick up) through his expressive power; he doesn't write for one specific type of person to read(?). She thinks this novel is a good place for people to start if they want to try a mystery.

A collection of nine short stories that, like a nightmare, will be in possession of your heart forever.

• Ayaka thinks the short story format/editing of this novel means it would be easy to pick up even if you aren't good at reading. The charm of the author here is "spookiness through beautiful words"; the madness felt in the beautiful words will frighten those who read between reality and the imagination.

3. Himawari no Sakanai Natsu (向日葵の咲かない夏) by Michio Shusuke (道尾秀介)
A school boy is asked to visit his friend S-kun at home when he doesn't attend closing ceremony before Summer vacation. Upon reaching his house he hears a strange sound, and finds S-kun hanging by his neck. Once the cops arrive his corpse disappears. A week later S-kun re-appears in a new form and asks his friend to trail the murderer to find his missing corpse.

• Was a candidate for the Honkaku Mystery Awards.

• Ayaka finds the element of reincarnation a key point in the story; it provides an unrealistic eeriness not found in other mysteries. The author places clever hints throughout that lead the reader and make you want to read it over many times.

1. Koi no Gondola (恋のゴンドラ) by Higashino Keigo (東野圭吾)
What is the fate of the 8 men and women who gather in midwinter?

• Ayaka says this is a rare love novel from Higashino. She started reading while thinking about it being comprised of short stories, but in the end everything is well connected. There are 8 main characters, and each has a part focused on them before it finally comes together as one story. It offers fun tricks and clever ups and downs, but there are instances where it's different from your usual mystery novel, including parts that make you laugh. Above all it's a story that is closely related to love in the present age, so she feels many people could relate. It feels more like a roller coaster than a gondola(?).

2. Kiken na Venus (危険なビーナス) by Higashino Keigo (東野圭吾)
My brother disappeared. His wife, Kaede, was an attractive and charming woman. To discover the cause of her husband's disappearance, I approached the family of my wealthy younger brother. He is confronted by her and cooperates, but as time goes by he (I?) becomes attracted to her(?). What is the mystery left by my mother and my two fathers? Where is my brother? Why did you disappear?

• Complex family dynamics reveald, the mystery of the family unravels more deeply as the story expands. Ayaka thinks it's a novel with a lot of mathematical essence throughout; misleads are impacted by demployments that in turn lead to further misleads. Although the novel seems very Higashino Keigo at first, if you read carefully you can see something new. The richness of the narrative, arousing a sense of anxiety, is presented by the skill of Keigo-san(?).

3. Ningyo no Nemuru ie (人魚の眠る家) by Higashino Keigo (東野圭吾)
Please answer; Am I the one who killed my daughter? Kazumasa and Kaoruko agree to divorce after their daughter's elementary school entrance exams are complete, but just before rehearsing for the family interview they recieve news that their daughter has fallen into the pool. A cruel reality awaits the two at the hospital, where the doctor is forced to make an unexpected choice.

• Has been adapted into a film, released November 16, 2018.
 
• This novel has recently been adapted to film. It features a family story, just as "Kiken na Venus" mentioned above, but it has a completely different atmosphere. A couple must face a decision regarding brain death. Though Ayaka has never had to face this reality, she thinks the unwillingness to face life and death is something everyone has felt. She recently lost her great grandmother, whose death was due to old age as she was over 100 years old. She felt it was the end of a happy life, but there was a moment where she thought it looked like her eyelids moved. She is 20 this year and she knows that people can move some after death, but even knowing that doesn't make death less horrific or cruel to face.
 
Under such circumstances, if you put your hand on your loved one and still feel a heartbeat. . are they dead? What should you do? What is living and what is dying? It's a grand theme and presents an issue felt in Japan and the world. Although it's difficult she recommends reading to the end.

1. Kudo Haruka Personal Book "Haruka" (工藤遥 パーソナルブック 『 Haruka 』)

It's the first personal book of Kudo Haruka, a senior of the same age from the same office that I am indebted to.

• Ayaka says though the broadcast ended in June, she was indebted to Kudo for over a year and a half as a regular on the same radio program. Ayaka began to deepen her relationship with Kudo in the past 18 months since her graduation.(?) Kudo was kind and popular with her juniors, and the more she gets involved the more Ayaka feels she is a senior that she loves. Although she could've gotten the book from Kudo, the bookstore enthusiast in her won and she eventually bought it for herself. She thinks the book is cute and you'll be happy just looking at it, all living things would love it. Above all the interview section is full of charm.

2. Tasuu Ketsu Vol. 1 (多数欠) by Miyakawa Taiga (宮川大河)

Suddenly, an extreme survival game began. Many in the world died and even more went missing. Some survivors have decided to join their strength together to face the entity behind it all, The Emperor.

• This is Ayaka's favorite manga. You can read it as a physical book or using manga apps. She's talked about "Tasuu Ketsu" on her blog a few times before, and wants to thank the author(?); a character based on Ayaka will be appearing in the next volume of the manga. She's extremely happy. The story is interesting, and because it's tricky you can deepen your understanding of it by reading it multiple times. It becomes even more compelling as you notice the small details and hints, and one of it's charms are the unique characters. Above all she loves the strength of bond they have.(?) It's a manga you want to read even if you like mystery novels but aren't familiar with manga.

3. Wada Sakurako 1st Photobook "Sakurako" (和田桜子 1st写真集 「桜子」)

The first photobook from Kobushi Factory groupmate Wada Sakurako.

•  Ayaka thought it would be a good idea to introduce Sakurako's photobook because it wasn't sold in regular bookstores. It's not a book review since there are no written words, but it's incredibly cute and the healing effect is huge. If you look at it after coming home from work, it's powerful enough to let you forgive/forget about anything unreasonable. Ayaka's sorry she didn't leave a book review instead, but she really wanted to introduce this.

 

She thinks everything about it is soothing/healing, from Sakurako's big eyes, cherry-colored lips, glossy black hair, and a sexiness seen in her soft smile and body. As a member she doesn't see it from the perspective of being healed, but it's obvious to her that many people would surely be healed by it.

1. Tiny Tiny Happy (タイニー・タイニー・ハッピー) by Asukai Chisa (飛鳥井千砂)
Surely there is a Tiny Happy around you. Located in a large shopping center in the suburbs of Tokyo, called Tiny Tiny Happy (or TaniHapi), an intricate human pattern, a romantic story depicting eight men and women in conflict.

Now years later, I don’t know if an extraordinary or average life is better, but seeing how the characters in “TaniHapi” have troubles and worries in their average lives, reading about how they face those problems in order to find happiness, I really find that I still look up to them (as I did in middle school).”

2. Dareka ga Miteiru (誰かが見ている) by Miyanishi Mafuyu (宮西真冬)
There is a “hidden side” to couples, parents, lovers. Housewife Chikako, who works part-time in a supermarket, can't stop seeking praise through her fake "happy, stylish childcare" blog. These four are connected to another person in various ways, and one day.. an unexpected incidenct occurs.

Something about the linked negative emotions of the characters being a thng that happens in everyday life, how being part of that chain would be difficult. [. . . ] A suspense novel showing the courage of a woman standing up again and again.(?)

3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Truman Capote

• Originally published in October 1958.

• The Tatsunokuchi Naotaro translation was released in 1960 (with a revision in 1968), and the Murakami Haruki translation was released in December 2008.
• Has been adapted several times; most famously as the 1961 film starring Aubrey Hepburn, a musical in 1966, an unsold TV pilot in 1969, and two stage plays (2009, 2013).
 
• When Ayaka first saw the film adaptation of this novel in middle school, she was struck by the beauty of Aubrey Hepburn and it caused her to become curious about the original work, eventually making her a fan.

 

There are two versions [translations] in Japanese, one by Tatsunokuchi Naotaro (龍口直太郎) and another by Murakami Haruki (村上春樹). Ayaka likes both of them. The overall original story doesn't change, but the impressions of the characters are slightly different depending on the translator. She read the two translations and the original around the same time with the help of a teacher at cram school(?), and still remembers how moved she was feeling the subtlety of the language and how just changing 1 word made a difference.

 

She thinks there are good points to both translations, but there's nearly 50 years difference between the publications. For the purposes of readability and a use of more modern expressions/language, she recommends the Murakami Haruki translation - but also thinks the Tatsunokuchi translation and the original have their merits, and ultimately would like people to include them both along with the film.

On a Facebook H!P group that I belong to, a question was posed as to who is the smartest member, Ayacho or Maachan. There was a comment or two about Yamaki but I felt like there should be some consideration for Ayapan, she strikes me as being one of those at the very top in terms of intelligence.

On another note, I find Beyooooonds Miyo Hirai to be very similar......in personality, intelligence and the general way she composers herself. If you've never noticed it, watch any video of Miyo talking and think of Ayapan when you do.
