Nonetheless, pretty impressive since they weren't using the same sales tactics that idol groups use nowadays.

Yes, but such sales figures back in 1999-2000 was actually more common than uncommon for the big acts. And music in Japan sold much, much, much more as well. Most sales records from Japan is from that era. So it is actually more impressive to sell these figures today, tactics or no tactics.

visionfactory,

That's complete nonsense.

http://www.riaj.or.j..._list/1999.html

This is its total: 「LOVEマシーン」1,646,630枚

Can you point out where you got that number on that page? VHS was slowly dying but not completely dead, and I'm sure that wasn't the selling point of the single. Just one edition sold over a million and that is pretty impressive. Times have changed, though. Anyway, visionfactory maybe confused the numbers for MM's first best of album which sold 2m +.

The RIAJ page shows certification for million seller, otherwise there is the total figure as released by Oricon and other outlets. If Love Machine had sold over 2M+ this would've been big news by now as Oricon would've released this figure. However, it has not sold that much. AKB48 broke Love Machine's record (idol group sales figure) with Manatsu no Sounds good!, and thereafter again with Sayonara Crawl, and now again with Labrador Retriever.

Anyways, album is album and single is single so you can only compare single with single and album with album :)

Love Machine is old and Oricon has changed too, so we can't really get an exact number. Both groups are great and have inspired many.

I got a second hand theater edition of this single, because I think I will eventually like this song. I think it's really weak compared to past summer/ election singles even compared to Sayonara Crawl. I don't think anyone should be worried about the sales. AKB still has enough fans to get them to a million and beyond.

correct me if I'm wrong, I think the "Love Machine sold 2M+" is from some stupid wiki (with no source) and somehow people believe that crap blindly lol

I'm ok if someone said something like "AKB can't beat MM's Love Machine without handshake events AND election tickets that involves 300+ members"

but not quoting stuff from stupid fanmade "wiki" that wrote by delusional random people

about VHS,

no, it's not "already dead". VHS is still around at that time. I personally own the VHS of MM's "Koi no Dance site" (ironically I don't own a VHS player lol)

As of Dec 30 2019, the girls are no longer broadcast daily even though they broadcasted daily for 3 years.

Watching people trying to argue and defend their ignorance since 1999TM. Btw dude chill, why so serious? lol

^ .. no problem .. please post the picture of the cover of the VHS ..
I just want to know if it's official ..
I too got tons of VHS ..but those were from English and Chinese singers .. and I know those were not official ..
Back then people are not mindful of piracy .. and really think that some stuff are official ..
even today .. we still got fake DVDs .. but the point is if its fake .. I don't think anyone will count them ..

and btw .. Love Machine is old but not that old .. because I am much older ..
during that time .. we already got internet .. and mobile phone are available to the masses ..
Japan is technologically more advance back then and the problem is we like to think its the same with our country ..
its very different from now .. where everyone is about the same with technology ..

Juriken'14(狩),

Entirely possible (re: Wiki). There's been some people over the recent years when AKB48 started selling a lot, that were changing MM's total sales figures. It's really stupid because it means people lose track of what the group has really sold. If someone edits AKB48's Sayonara Crawl to 2.87M sold copies it would be stupid, not cool, nor helpful.

yuufi,

There's just something about the melody of Labrador Retriever to me that gives it this hint of an ethereal feeling, like it's a journey or something like that. It's just my personal take on it of course, but I think it's really good compared to their previous single. I want more earworm singles. :)

^… Oh Wow.. it's like the grandfather of single V which was finally phase out last year..
Even though I can't see the wordings.. the quality of it and the short amount of tape is enough to think it's official..
So I am wrong on that..

Which make me think if there was a chart for video..
Because when H!P got single V, it is charted on a video chart..
People like to combine the 2 sales as one sales..

I do think that it can hit the 2 million mark if we add the video sales to music sales..
So it's very possible..

I am not really into who is better argument.. done it like many times here and it's endless..
But I do like to know the truth of some stuff..
True data and statistic is important to me because it reflect history and culture..
For this case.. if we can find real reliable source on the video sales and it's a lot.. it will show that the Japanese are still into VHS at a time when even the VCD is on it's way out.. we can wiki the life of VHS.. but we can get the true life of it from statistic like this..

OK.. for this single.. I only got time to listen to the music I haven't watch the video yet..
I am actually not fond of this single.. it seem to move away from the typical idol piece which they usually do for senbatsu election voting single..
I really must find time to watch the 4 DVDs.. Lol

But you don't combine VHS and single sales, or single and Single V sales. Those are completely different products. Which is why Upfront are idiots for separating these things as they could surely sell more if they combined them. Who on earth wants to buy 7 single versions (in Morning Musume's case), and thereafter buy the Single V's as well?
