It seems that a JKT48 member, Sonya Pandarmawan has already starred in a commercial and a sitcom before she became a member.

Diasta is really cute! Apparently she speaks Indonesian, English and Japanese too which is really impressive. She's got herself a new (first?) fan!

Devi looks cute in her profile picture, but well it's just one picture... too early to judge in general :) Wonder how much media exposure they will get (and we will notice here). :)

We get documentaries of all the girls daily lives in Indonesia, I think the Japanese 48 fans may grow more interest in JKT48. Hopefully Western fans will too.

And wow, I knew K-Pop was popular but not that popular as the charts says for the Asian market. I can see why, that K-Pop bug been biting me recently hmm

So many AkiP idol groups around recently! Lolsz, I guess I became a fan at a good time. Kuz every month something big happens. From Katyusha sales to Eguchi Aimi to the Senbatsu Election to NMB48 debut to Team 4 formation to Flying Get sales and it's Mini movie to the official rivals Nogizaka46 to the Janken Tournament to the announcement of the mass graduation of SDN48 to The announcement of TPE48 and the formation of JKT48. Am I missing something in between?! Lolsz. One thing AKB fans and lurkers never suffer is boredom of this phonomenom !

Okay, there were replies from my fellow countrymen that didn't really explain things successfully (mostly because of their lack of English skill, but hey - nobody's perfect). So I'm gonna try to clear things up based on what I've read:

Though, Indonesia of all places! I would never have expected something like that, since it's not one of the "larger" music production countries such as Korea or Taiwan.

Indonesia is a big market for its own artists (it's a country with high population). Sales are declining now, but in the 90s most renown artists can even reach 1 million album sales quite easily.

I just cannot find myself to care about Jakarta 48, Africa 48, Albania 48, Uruguay 48, Mongolia 48 or what have you not. Mostly because to me the word "idol" has a connotation and context that is uniquely Japanese. In Japan. An aspect or expression of Japanese subculture basically.
If all idols in Japan ended tomorrow, permanently, and the alternative was K-pop, and "idols" from say Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan or similar, I would not follow them.

IMO JKT48 will only concentrate to succeed locally (at Jakarta) and nationally. I think it's more like a 'localized 48'with Aki-P still somewhat monitoring things but not really involved in daily basis. Of course this means he may have a plan to make the '48' brand go worldwide with this strategy. Who knows we may have NY48, PRS48, MNL48, etc in the future.
Speaking of idols, in Indonesia the term "idol" is referred to people who graduated from a local talent show 'Indonesian Idol' (same franchise with American Idol). Girl and boy groups are simply called girlband and boyband, respectively.

P.S.I'm not trying to dis Indonesian pop, I've just never heard any Indonesian music. Considering the massive non-effect a "foreign" unit had before (I forgot Coconut's Musume in the previous example) with another Idol group I liked, I see no cause for concern at this time.

You live too far away, Indonesian music is quite known in Asia. A band called 'Dewa' had a successful concert in Japan and a female singer called 'Agnes Monica' is a big hit nowadays, plus an Indie band called 'Sore' made it into Time (magazine) Asia as one of the 5 best Asian albums of the year (2008 if i'm not mistaken).

Knowing that idols are typically involved in gravure and release PB's in swimwear and other skin-baring outfits...at least the Japanese one's anyway. . .

(I'm asking this question honestly) How are idols supposed to thrive in the largest Muslim country in the world? Maybe I'm just not that familiar with Indonesian culture, but I don't see typical idol culture meshing with Islam. I would appreciate any clarity that could be brought to this subject. Thanks.

Indonesia is not a Muslim country, its way of life is based on a principal called 'Pancasila', basically every Indonesian is free to choose their own beliefs. Indonesia has the largest number of muslim in the world, but other religions like Christian, Catholic, Hindu, and Buddha still got millions of follower here. There's about 15% of non-muslim in Indonesia (and with a population of 250.000.000++), that's still a big number.

Now the basic question, can idol groups succeed in Indonesia? Yes, in fact they're going pretty good lately. Can they wear bikinis? No. Easy as that

They're local girl group called 'Cherrybelle'.

In terms of voice and dancing quality, they're the best so far. I'm one of their fan (already bought the mini-album). More info on: www.cherrybelle.info

to sum it up:
- In case some of you're asking, Yes there are many cute girls in Indonesia.
- JKT48 is most likely to concentrate on local audience with Aki-p still monitoring things.
- Yes, Idol groups can succeed in here, it's just that the way they present themselves are to be aligned with Indonesian culture and tradition (no bikini that is - although if you ask me, I'm a pro-bikini guy ^^; )
