I get tax on any orders from Japan doesn't matter what size.

Sending the package as a "gift" is the only way to avoid it but none of the major shops would agree to that.

CD arrived right as I was leaving the house (rare occasion for USPS to be delivering so early!)! Never using YesAsia again, especially after seeing how people got special extras from HMV! Got a Mayuyu photo and one of Takamina, Yuko and Kojiharu in their cover shot costumes haphazardly taped to the box.

Rant time!

Just for the polemics, Time Out Tokyo’s review of AKB48 and SNSD’s latest albums (if you don’t want to click you can already have it all with this: “You might not hear a better J-pop album this year. Or a worse one”)

http://www.timeout.j...irls-Generation

Things about it:

- I would like to see if it would be understandable to mix in the same review, say the two biggest rock bands, or hip-hop artists, or R&B singers just because their release dates are close. With girlbands you could do that. Is sort of a rockist dogma: soulless, depthless, prefabricated, plastic, etc. But is to make an argument up: the “virtues” of one of them cast a stronger light over the “weakness” of the other one.

- So we start somehow rehashing stereotypes: AKB fans buy multiple copies, SNSD fans not. Well, a lie.

- “AKB48 rely on bland exhortations” (…) ”and equally bland expressions of affection”. Well, it may be. But that is exactly my problem with the SNSD record. There is a taped conversation on YouTube with some of the J-Pop producers and lyricists that wrote most of the songs there and the parts they sub in English are very telling, the selling moment of it, how to reinforce in their fans the marketing images associated with the group:

Idea of lyric making comes from my image of Girls' Generation- like "aggressive", "edgy", "vogue" and "cool" to me.

STY Lyrics has been mixed up with Japanese, English and Korean. It's new style. It's very Girls' Generation!!

We might be teachers of "Bacchiri-desu (meaning PERFECT!!)"!?

They are professional, tough, smart, super-girls!!

As a matter of fact, not a problem with it. AKB does exactly the same (with different means) to appeal to their fans. But I feel that the SNSD album repeats itself in being “aggressive”, “edgy”, “vogue” and “cool” to the point of not saying anything else. Also there is something else: is that they are not selling say, those ideas from a Korean point-of-view and then somehow being “new”, but from a Japanese one. Those guys that have penned lots of Koda Kumi or Namie Amuro songs, and you kind of feel that is the same formula that those singers could have been using in the last decade with more current sounds. Adding that as a matter of fact, that capitalism cheerleading I found a bit flat and bland (I like Namie Amuro, but she has a different personal background), there is not much to keep my interest on the record. Which is sad, because on record, SNSD have always much more personality that what they are pretending to sell with their Japanese image.

- So doing statements like “Still, there's only one album here that you'll still be listening to at the end of the year, and it starts with a G” is just rhetoric. Two weeks on and I’m not going to listen again that record. And the funny thing is that I thought the same about the AKB record, that depending on which forum you get your opinions or statements, have been also slammed by some fans. But I played it the other day and kind of liked it more. Maybe it has something to do with listening to the record itself (and I still think is not a masterwork or nothing close to it), but also I’m biased because I’m a fan of them. I understand that idol music has been repeating itself decades and that is one of the driving forces in the music market, but I don’t think that other trends are more progressive just because they would like to think so about themselves while repeating themselves without end on the same formulas.

I think it's hard for people who don't "get" idols to be unbiased and review idol material. Obviously it's not breakthrough music (although neither is SNSD's at all, it's just a copy of the american mainstream) and it has a very defined style: Being happy, cutesy and uplifting is what idol music is about, sure, AKB has ventured to different music genres before (especially in stages) but idols are about kiyoku tadashiku utsukushiku. And if you don't get that aesthetic then I'm not gonna pay attention to anything you say Mr. Ian

@Valerie: You should see how it is here in Popayan lol it's only reggaeton... but I kinda like it

^ Basically. These guys who write these things are jealous that a bunch of teenagers are making more money than they ever will.

^^ Also this. Spot-on. :good: Although such articles appear in newspapers/in online papers, they are not even journalism; only the rantings of people who think too highly of their opinions.

I suspect with the number of orders I should not complain too much about having to pay customs like once a week,

The post office tried to deliver my album today but no one was home to sign for it :sob: I have to go get it from the post office tomorrow at lunch ugh

^ wow :o so many orders. So does everyting going into the UK get a customs fee or just stuff over a certain amount?
Also I'm curious if the US has customs fees for really pricey packages - like I have one coming in a couple weeks that's a few hundred dollars worth of AKB48 stuff, will that get a fee?

In theory on everything with a value above 18£ (roughly 25$) you have to pay in the uk (unless its declared as a gift, then the exempt amount doubles), however it's random if they pick your package and look at it or not, at least when its something that arrives by Royal Mail (anything sent by Air Mail or SAL), size definitly seems to influence it, but sometimes they also look at small packages, when something comes with Parcelforce (Which is actually the same company as Royal Mail so don't ask why they handle it differently) then its guaranteed to get looked at, since everything sent by EMS is deliverd by Parcelforce it results in a guaranteed Customs charge on everything shipped by EMS, worst of all Customs also works very slow, I've seen stuff arrive from Japan in two days, then Customs took a week to figure out how much to charge me... which sometimes then results in Airmail being quicker than EMS lol.
But I live for those lovely Japanese idols and even if I complain, it's not going to stop me, or even slow me down lol

This group of writers just really hates anything that is successful, I read an article by them a while ago hating on EXILE and probably any one successful. I think what they failed to realize when reviewing they SNSD album is the language barrier. It's really hard to understand what most of SNSD is singing. They haven't quite mastered Japanese on a level where it is super easy to understand, and it shows, a lot of there songs have mostly english and some korean and some japanese. It's also hard to listen to their better singles, especially knowing that the korean version is better.
The AKB album isn't best, but it is a good start to better albums. At least they are making an album with some original songs included. It won't earn them many new fans, but they are an idol group they have singles for that. About the lyrics they have to be some what simple, over 100 girls have to learn the lyrics. About pushing the limit, AKB48 is pushing the limit right now by being AKB48.

I may say negative things about my idols, but it's only because I really like them! :good:
