The HDD thread

They literally carry them 2.5"s in their pockets (I'm referring to HD, not something else )
The casing and USB connectivity makes it really convenient too
So anyways, considering the price, its actually a lot cheaper than carrying USB flash drives ne?
Consider the fact that that the cheapest 512mb USB flash drive (generic brand) around here costs around HKD300 (almost USD 40)
I bought a Hitachi 2.5" 80GB 5400rpm 8mb cache yesterday complete with the USB casing for HKD 1115 (roughly USD 140), complete with 3 years manufacturer's warranty.
same ease of connectivity (both being USB, just plug-and-pray it works)
the HD is a bit over 3x the price of the mentioned USB drive, but carries over 150 times the capacity.
(well, the size factor? its comparable to my wallet... only much less thinner, since my wallet carries too much bills... ~.~)
I wonder why this method of data storage isnt widely (or perhaps not even used) in America? hmmmm

I don't really use it because I'm not in school anymore and don't have that much data to shuttle around. I use CF and SD for carrying data so that I can view them on my PDA (I watch a lot of my anime on PDA on the subway). However, if I was still in school and wanted to just carry data around between school and home machine, I'd use that. But for work, the spare space on the CF and SD is usually more than enough.

I'll let Nyekobug take this one. I only have ~350GB of stuff on my Media center PC, about 10 GB free. ~30GB of stuff on my BT laptop, about 1 GB free. and 370GB on a external HDD, about 10GB free. Every thing else is on DVD's
Bwahaha, um, alot?
Computers have:
Primary:
(system partition) : 4.02GB / 15.0GB
(data partition) : 2.31GB / 54.5GB
(additional ext. drive) : 48.6GB / 189GB
(additional ext. drive) : 55.3GB / 114GB
(additional ext. drive) : 65.2GB / 279GB
VidServer:
(system drive): 88.3GB / 114GB
(media drive): 188GB / 189GB
FileServer:
(system/bittorrent drive): 20.8GB / 149GB
(cache drive) : 148GB / 149GB
(storage drive) : 1022GB / 1490GB (Teradrive!)
Usenet/Gaming:
(system/download drive) : 20.7GB / 111GB
Totals: ~1663GB / ~2853GB (42% used)
These computers are all networked together, and the Teradrive is only a recent addition, and yes, I do have access to all of this data from one computer :] And unlike agb, i don't have much backed up on DVDs, in fact, I'm backing DVDs up to the Teradrive ;D

Nice, gotta love having network shares on your systems. I actually have two iPods - an older 20G (which iTunes decided it needed to be "reconfigured" so it's totally empty) and a shuffle.
I wish I had an infinite-speed network connection, I'd start leasing out space on my server :].
For those of you living in the US, Newegg has some phenomenal deals from time to time on hard drives. I only have to say don't get Maxtors, 'cause I've been burned (literally!) by them and their extremely high power consumption/temperature.

That is true... I'd probably fill mine pretty damn quickly too. Of course, I am *such* a packrat, I'd just get more drives... and more drives...
You know Fry's is selling a Buffalo Terastation for like $700 or so (up to gigabit-network storage solution, supports up to 1TB or various other raid configurations over four drives.
