So I just watched the subbed version and I found myself enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. I just love how Duu's first role is that of sweet, cheeky girl . Also, her voice stands out to so much! We all know she doesn't have a typical girl's voice. I wonder if it's good or bad thing in showbiz ...anyway, I think despite her usually sounding rather low she did a great job of making her voice sound cute without it being over the top or sounding forced or anything. 

 

Tldr, very satisfied with this first episode. Great job on everyone's part. Also, Persona 5 feeling intensifies lol - the outfits, conflict with an official person of the law, treasures to be stolen, there's even a Cafe?!

Surprise! So I wasn't planning on this but I really wanted to do something in celebration of Duu's acting debut, so here's the translation to Duu's Oricon interview. Or well most of it, since I didn't realize there was a 2nd page.   It's not the complete interview but I think I was able to translate most of the interesting stuff. 

 

She talks a little bit about the audition process, the members' reactions, etc. It's a really interesting and thoughtful interview, and I thought it was worth sharing.

In December 2017, Kudo Haruka graduated from the idol group Morning Musume’17 (currently Morning Musume’18; from here on, will be referred to as Morning Musume [in this article]). The reason for her decision to graduate at the young age of 18 was because of her strong desire to act. And so, she graduated and before long, it was announced that she would be appearing in the Super Sentai series “Kaitou Sentai Lunpinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger” (airing on TV Asahi every Sunday morning 9:30AM starting 2/11). It’s her first work as an actress and she received the role of the main character in a TV program that [is considered to be] the gateway to success for young actors and actresses. This same Kudo Haruka talked to us about her determination for this project, as well as her worries and her resolve toward her transition from idol to actress.

 

 

[Her first] audition since the time she joined Momusu, “I was more nervous than [when I was standing on stage at] Nippon Budoukan!” 

 

Interviewer: [Your] appearance in “Kaitou Sentai Lunpinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger” was decided and while undergoing preparations and filming, it seems two months have already gone by. Kudo-san, were you able to familiarize yourself with your role as LupanYellow’s Hayami Umika? 

 

Kudo: That’s right. Because I was able to really immerse myself in the role, Umika is always close to me. Also, it’s different from the male roles I’ve had until now, and I’ve also had a lot of roles [where I played] serious characters. Because of that, I also wanted to break away from these roles and [play characters that] are easy-going, so I’m having a lot of fun as Umika.

 

Interviewer: Indeed, Umika’s character has that impression about her: a down-to-earth* young woman with a Kudo-like energy about her. It seems that you, yourself, are also like that on [the filming] set.

 

*Someone who doesn’t put on airs, appear just as they are.

 

Kudo: Truthfully, we’re both the same age and in high school, so to be able to boisterously enjoy ourselves while being surrounded by calm, level-headed adults is a privilege [of the youngest one*]. [When I was] in the group, I stood in the front and was in the position to give directions, but my position now is to follow. Just like my character, I can take it easy**

 

*She’s not exactly the youngest one, since iirc, Asahi (red ranger) is a few months younger than Duu but she’s likely to be one of the youngest on set at least.

Interviewer: It seems that you were originally a fan of the Super Sentai series, but [the series has a] strong impression of being [a TV program that becomes the] gateway to success for young actors and actresses. Furthermore, this current project is your first work since graduating from Morning Musume last year. As an actress, you’re starting from square one; what do you think in regards to this? 

 

Kudo: “Until I graduate, I won’t make any decisions on any [future] projects” is something I had thought, but my experience and popularity as an actress is zero. “A job that I can get [without searching for it], above all else, does not exist”, “I have to work for it” while thinking of these things, I ended up saying that “I want to audition.” And then, by chance, I heard about the audition for this project and decided, “I don’t know what’ll happen but let’s just try!” and took part in the auditions.

 

Interviewer: How was the audition process actually like?

 

Kudo: Taking part in the audition was also [my first time] since I auditioned for Morning Musume. I took the audition while I was still in Morning Musume. Because of that, [I realized that] taking an audition in order to enter the world of show business and taking an audition while being in the world of show business is completely different. Because of this, I was incredibly nervous about my first audition in so long. It was my first time in a while feeling this nervous.

 

Interviewer: Even more than such a big stage that you’ve stood on numerous times? 

 

Kudo: Yup. I was even more nervous than [when] I was standing on Nippon Budokan! (laughs)

Interviewer: At your graduation concert in Nippon Budokan last December, you said, “This current generation has many young actors and actresses, so I have no choice but to jump all the way in.” It was impressive. That understanding [of what it meant to] transition from idol to actress is not something you ordinarily see; [with that kind of attitude], I think all the fans are attentively watching over you while giving you their support. Please tell us your thoughts about that gamble.

 

Kudo: I thought that I have to quickly [re-]appear as an actress in front of everyone who has given me their support. I was given the opportunity to be an idol for 6 years but I had never been on my own, and even within the group, there are so many charming members… As expected, being distracted is [a quality of being] human. The people who told me that they love Kudo Haruka were people who loved Kudo Haruka the idol and people who loved Morning Musume. If that’s the case, the me who isn’t in Morning Musume wouldn’t interest them and once my graduation has faded from their memory, I thought that “I’ll be forgotten.”

Going forward, what kind of youth do you want to live out?

 

Kudo: In the first place, my start in Morning Musume was already really early, so even with being in the group for 6 years, I’m still only 18 years old. 18 years old is the age where one graduates from high school and thinks about whether to go to college or to start working; it’s the age where you’re standing at a crossroad in your life. If you think of it like that, graduating from Morning Musume might have been a little early, but if I [want to] aim to become an actress, I don’t think [graduating at this] age is too soon. When I was asked which path [I wanted] to take, heading down this path to become an actress was my decision for graduating.

 

Interviewer: Once again, we can really feel your strong feelings for acting but also, your strong love for Morning Musume. Someday, during your activities as an actress, the title of “ex-Morning Musume” will come up. What do you think about that? 

 

Kudo: The day that people forget that I was an idol [will only come] if I’m recognized as an actress. Everyone was worried that I might injure myself, but I stubbornly kept saying I was okay. Idols are always wearing heels while dancing and moving around on stage. I realized that this was a skill that I had cultivated from being an idol. Now, the staff members have gotten used to it and tell me, “You were even dancing [in those heels] huh” in which I’d reply back, “That’s right. It’s no problem, if it’s just this much” (laughs).

Didn't know there was a chance of these two hanging out post grad (that's what's happening right?). I just knew they were Reina fans.

^ Duu and Sayubee have been close since their KSS days but ever since Duu debuted in Momusu (and later on, Sayubee in J=J), they've had less time to hang out with one another because of schedules.

 

It's nice to see them hanging out after Duu's grad, though!
