Just wondering how many people out there have a separate computer for doing their bittorrent stuff with. I've got an el-cheapo dell server (was like $300 a while back) that i use ^_^

LOL! I'm the reverse. My laptop is my BT station because I find that laptop HDD is more rugged and can support 24/7 better. Not to mention lower power draw :D

I use my main PC for BT as well. I'd say it's more dependant on clients you run. I use Azureus. Since it's java-based, it's a lil more taxing on the system from the get-go.. but it handles multiple simultaneous downloads better, IMO. However, I dislike using the limitation built into the programs themselves, as they seem to limit download speed, too XD
I use a seperate program called NetLimiter (www.netlimiter.com) to actually throttle the connection up and down with my PC use. You can also set timers, if you know other people will want to use the internet at certain times XD Plus it shows you the total traffic in and out, and it's cool to see just how much stuff you download and upload on a daily basis.

As for some basic info: I use 4m x 384k DSL. I usually set the limit up to 25K upload when no one needs the connection. Still plenty of bandwidth for basic surfing and then some, but games don't like that much going on.. so I push it back to around 15K when I'm actually doing moderate things, and 5K when I'm doing a lot (like online FPS). Since the connection speed also dictates how much you're downloading (ack packets and whatnot need room in upload, too) it'll limit how much data is being tossed around on the filesystem the lower you run.. so you can keep downloading, or seeding, and still do whatever you wanted to do.

I personally use a high speed SATA drive to download to, then move things to a lower speed ATA storage drive until I can burn them. But, I also don't download to the C drive, which is also on the SATA, just because it's where all the games/swap file are it, and it keeps the computer performing a wee better XD But, I'm a multi-tasking nut.. playing FPS, listening to music/AMVs, BT, messengers and the like.. all on one lil machine. Oh, and make sure your BT client sets itself to create the full file at creation.. helps keep defraging to a minimum XD

huh... no, they don't... XD or maybe you are not using them properly...

Heh, getting a second computer for bittorrenting has been the best thing for me in terms of being a good seeder :).

Oh, and make sure your BT client sets itself to create the full file at creation.. helps keep defraging to a minimum

Thanks for that tip Niphty - I just upgraded from the older experimental 3.2.1 client to the newest Bittornado (0.3.7), and I just realized it doesn't pre-allocate the files, and I wondered why my drive defrag map was so red ^___^. I should start a new poll because I'm on a Fry's run high. Tonight, I break the 1TB storage mark ^_____^

Welcome to the 'over-a-TB' club! (1.75TB here) :)

Anyways.. Bittornado has an option to pre-allocate files.. It's somewhere in preferences..

Hi Noemi-

Welcome to the 'over-a-TB' club! (1.75TB here)?

[EDIT] Bwahaha, 2.15TB. The network drives are split over three computers, mostly connected via gigabit ethernet (one wireless).

Anyways.. Bittornado has an option to pre-allocate files.. It's somewhere in preferences..

Yup, I discovered that shortly after I read niphty's tip. Heh, I just thought it was the lag of RDC that wasn't showing the allocation. :). In any case, it's all good ^___^

I use one even thugh i have two computers. I usually only use the second
when i need two for example when i play games on one and want to surf
meanwhiles. I havn't played any computer games lately though and since
this is my "game" machine it is kind of overdimensioned for just BT+surfing.
So i feel no need to start the other one just to use it for BT.

Having both turned on also makes my room a bit hot. Good in the winter but
not as fun in the summer :w00t:
