I love pretty much anything by Yoko Kanno, her compositions never cease to amaze me. For example Wolf's Rain and Cowboy Bebop soundtracks are very impressive, and songs like Heaven's Not Enough, Cloud 9 and Blue always give me the chills. And that leads to one of my favorite Japanese female singers, Maaya Sakamoto. She does some great vocal performances on the Escaflowne soundtrack, but her solo works are even more impressive as her voice has matured quite a bit since the Escaflowne times. Songs like Sora wo miro, Birds, Here, Loop and Park Amsterdam are well worth checking out.

Oh, has anyone here listened to Rin'? Their fusion of modern pop and traditional Japanese music is very impressive in my opinion.

those are good recommendations. all those artists have been around for many years and still going strong. especially B'z, Mr. Children, and Southern All Stars.
those three are at the top of Japanese artist record sales, with the fourth being Hamasaki Ayumi, if anyone cares for sales figures type stuff.

anyway, I'd recommend those too, especially B'z
2001-2005 ..good days.. good times.

god, i listen to so much music & love so many songs, the recommendation list would be endless! so i'll try to limit it to my fav 20 songs (and even then, the list would probably change the moment I post this!):

1. Far Away (Nickelback)
2. Do I Have To Say The Words? (Bryan Adams)
3. Star (Bryan Adams)
4. Your Body Is Wonderland (John Mayer)
5. Dare You to Move (Switchfoot)
6. Tonight (Westlife)
7. One Night (Corrs)
8. You're My Number One (S Club 7)
9. Kiss Me (Sixpence None The Richer)
10. Take A Look Around (Limp Bizkit)
11. I'll Never Stop (NSync)
12. I Need You (Leann Rimes)
13. Remember The Name (Fort Minor)
14. The Game of Love (Santana & Michelle Branch)
15. Fly (Hilary Duff)
16. One Sweet Day (Mariah Carey & BoyzIIMen)
17. I Knew I Loved You (Savage Garden)
18. Blurry (Puddle of Mudd)
19. Bawitdaba (Kid Rock)
20. Geek In The Pink (Jason Mraz)

as you can see, varies a lot, from ballads to hard rock. but artist-wise, i guess i'm a big fan of Bryan Adams, Switchfoot, Nickelback & John Mayer.

as for J-Pop, other than H!P, i'm a HUGE fan of YUI. so do please give her songs a listen. still going through a lot of J-Pop artists (haven't even finished H!P yet!), so other than YUI & ZONE, haven't got much to recommend yet.

I totally recommend HALCALI. They are this nice little J-Urban group who does music that borders pop and rap. It's completely unique. They are my absolute favorite group in the world. Unfortunately you either love them a lot or hate them a lot. So it's kinda a coin flip. But if you want to see something funny/different I suggest checking them out.
