Yeah, it gets overly ridiculous sometimes. (Granted, I don't get how people can be so afraid of real spiders...)

I don't think for some of them it's as exaggerated as we think. I 've seen females and grown men go nuts over a fake spider/bug/snake. I even scared the mess out of my older brother by throwing some fabric scraps on the ground and calling it a spider.
