あやっぺ
作詞・作曲: 村井大 編曲: 左久間誠

Song Credits

We know who 村井さん is. He wrote the lyrics for 女DAY BY DAY. He's gone on to greater things, composing and arranging various songs including some for きらりん☆レボリューション and the upcoming 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 Sega-made Nintendo game series for those readers who devote themselves to Haruhiism! :GGRR: When I say "greater things" I mean things that more people will listen to. きらりん maybe but ハルヒ most definitely. He also composed this song which is one responsibility more than his previous Aya song. 佐久さん has worked previously on some Buono! songs... see a pattern emerging here?

Title

The title gives a lot away about this song. There are a few things that spring to mind when you think of the word 'boom' but thinking about the type of artist that Aya marketed as, the field narrows down considerably. Songs by numbers then... Gee by 소녀시대 (sorry to mention them again but this is sort of relevant) is currently taking Korea by storm and breaking record after record so I thought it was a nice contrast to the plight of Aya's career. The song features the word 'gee' fifty-two times and there has been some talk about the amount of repetiton in the song. In this song (boomboomboom) I counted one-hundred-and-fifty-one instances of ブン and an additional forty-seven instances of ブ! Plus another three if you want to include 寝足, ドライ and 久しり. We're talking nearly two-hundred counts of boom and almost-boom so I'll go out on a limb and say that the concept of 'boom' is pretty important to this song!

Foreword

It might be worth pointing out that I think this is the weakest song on the album but having said that, I actually really like it. There a lot of the reverse of how I've been translating lines in this one. In other songs I tended to translate two or more lines together but in this song I've translated all the lines to pairs. Just seemed easier to follow that way. Oh, and it's long... you have to scroll miles to get to the end of the translation! :w00t:

Thoughts

I've never used copy/paste so much in my life but I definitely wasn't going to type out every single 'boom' in all that! Plus there was the romanisation to do as well! These lyrics are meant to be read as much as they are meant to be heard. Every single occurrence of the sound ぶん is intentionally written as ブン. That's actually the word 分 for all except セブン and ヘブン. It's supposed to emphasise that everything in the song is... BOOM! That's what all the orange words are in case you were wondering.

I don't really know what to write about this song itself. It's pretty self explanatory and I think it's one of Aya's better upbeat songs, not that she has had that many recently so make of that what you will. Might as well go through it line by line anyway.

That's throwing us a bit... starting a song with a chorus, or half of the second part of a chorus. We'll live. There are a lot of booms, which we're told immediately is an awesome and personal feeling that feels like it could be love. Is it? We'll see. By the way, whatever your idea is of love, or more specifically the two Japanese words that translate to love (恋 and 愛), in this song the idea is that when you fall in love you fall in carp: 恋に落ちる. You don't fall in 愛 because that's much deeper and takes time. Theoretically anyway. So even if you're like me and don't believe in "love at first sight", for the purpose of this song (and many other Japanese songs I guess) it's probably best to think of 恋 as an emotional entrée.

In the first verse we get clarification for what the booms are all about, as if we needed it but better to know the score for sure I guess. Simple sensual things (definition 1, not 2b) are enough to send our girl's heart into overdrive. I don't want to imagine what her poor heart would do if it was 2b! :D The word 'boom' expresses more clearly that the feeling is animated (like the song) and intense, almost violent. That compares to the usual ドキドキ which is the word that's usually used in for situations where heartbeats feel more prominent due to emotions. Next to ブンブン it's hardly worth talking about, let alone singing!

I like how the song pans out in the bridge and chorus. Our smitten kitten wonders what would happen if she were to be as bold as to approach this guy who is sending her heart into overdrive. The crossroads (obviously figurative) could mean one of two things. Firstly it could be the point where two paths meet and bisect: her own and the guy's. It's not the greatest analogy because having two paths meet like X means that once they meet they start to move further and further away from each other. A better analogy would be a fork in the road. The two paths converging together in a Y would be much better. Suggesting Y is better than X has overtones of geneticists' sexism though. The other way to see it is simply as a point in her life path where she has to make a decision on which way to go. This is the more likely one given the first part of the chorus...

... which I thought was pretty funny. From the point in the bridge where she's wondering if she should throw caution to the wind we get a glipse of her overactive imagination as she imagines what life would be like if she goes for it. She'd watch his every move like a hawk and go on dates each night meaning that they'd be together everyday, not quite 24/7 though. Every now and again she gets a bit too excited and her heart thumps heavily, surprising her but realising that she's imaging things and that she's becoming obsessed. They say the first step is admitting you have a problem. :sob: What's so funny about that then? Remember that I have a peculiar sense of humour... :c03:

The second part of the chorus eventually brings us back to beginning of the song. I'm not sure what you want to make of "lucky seven" and "super heaven". Is super heaven better than regular heaven? There's a distinct feel that the words were chosen purely on the basis that they had ブン in them. That's my inner cynic coming out to say hello! :D As Sonny and Cher sung, The Beat Goes On. The heavy beating of our though-laden maiden's heart that is. Keeps pounding away like the happy little Duracell Bunny on his drum. Maybe the way the Energizer Bunny drums is more appropriate but it's not as cute (and it's a parody). But then we're back to the beginning of the song. Yay!

Second verse and hold up, something has happened? Our miss in bliss has his phone number! When did that happen? I guess she really went through with it! Good on her. So she has his number and in the middle of the night she wants to call him. Her hands are sweating because she is really nervous. Quite cute really, but not quite as cute as not being able to sleep as the hours go past. :good:

Bridge time again and now we have a girl with two sides. The cautious one was the one in the first half of the song but the daring one is the one we have now. Back to the Queen references from the previous entry but it's like Don't Stop Me Now. I mean the idea of wanting moments to continue attitude rather than the songs themselves being similar.

The lack of sleep affects both of them so it's reasonable to assume that she eventually did call him... but for several days they're not getting enough sleep and seeing him yawn gets our belle under a spell going again. As a straight male Aya fan I'm almost bound to say this my idea of a sleepy face that would get my heart going is something more like this...

I'm sure many a straight female would prefer to see that in the morning than a man yawning! Still... as they say, 十人十色! They're also going on drives which in this context means getting out of the city and seeing some sights rather just driving for the sake of relaxation and not in a joy-ride way either. Basically it's a date and as a result the two become a couple, but rather quirkily it's only because our girl decides that they are!

That sort of pace is slightly intimidating, and not just to people who are afraid of commitment. From not dating to talks of a lifetime together in a flash. Her reasons for it are clear though... deep emotional reaction and so on. Is it 恋? If that's not it then nothing is! ^^;

For another one of those "don't know what to say" entries this sure is a long one! x_x About "smitten kitten" and all that... I was eating Ben & Jerry's cookie dough ice cream (as if that was important information!) and I thought it'd be a bit more interesting than saying "the narrator". Was I wrong? I think "smitten kitten" is the best one. It's the title of an episode of Tom & Jerry whereas the rest were awful uses of a rhyming dictionary!

Singing Style

Good thing this isn't the song that when you sing seven times good things will happen! :D Aya sung this at her Christmas Dinner Show and it doesn't sound like the most comfortable song to sing live. Despite that she did a really good job of it and I'm wondering if I won't say it's better than the CD version. Oh, I'll say it. Breath issues aside from singing ブン one-hundred-and-fifty-one times, the singing sounds better. Of course it may be a case of the studio microphones being a lot more sensitive than whatever those awesome fans use to record shows but the singing on the CD version suffers from something I can't really describe properly. It's a sort of step in Aya's voice as she sings notes. I find it hard to explain what it is but the sometimes the notes aren't smooth. Listen to the slower part of the bridge for instance. She does it three, maybe four times there and it's just a little tiny break in fluidity. Maybe that's why I prefer her ballads but saying that she did it in 想いあふれて and not 気がつけば あなた so I don't know. But these upbeat songs are the ones I shouldn't be analysing her singing performance on. Regardless of what I shouldn't be doing, that's one of the reasons why I said this is the weakest song on the album but I actually really like the song which is unusual for me.

You know that game where you sing along to songs but have to miss out certain word? The モーニング娘。 girls sometimes played on ハロモニ. Well if you did that with this song you'd have a hard time of it! :D It'd be interesting to know if anyone can manage singing it in one go without singing ブン at any time, but keeping all the instances of ブ alone in there! Almost interesting enough to make a competition of it but I have nothing to give away. Actually, that's a lie because I have plenty that I could give a way but I don't have anything which I wouldn't mind giving away!
:D

Musical Style

Jazz?! There's brass in it but no, defintely not jazz! :D A nice change from the J-word right? I think the style is samba although I'm not really that clued up on worldwide musical styles. My music teacher at school wasn't very good and most people thought music was a joke subject so nobody paid attention meaning he spent most lessons trying to get people to listen rather than teach. It's mostly bells and whistles throughout. By that I don't mean that most of the music serves little purpose but that it's mostly bells and whistles, literally! It reminds me a lot of the music that plays when you win a race with Yoshi in the original Super Mario Kart for the SNES/Super Famicom! If that's before you're generation then you probably shouldn't be reading this entry but you can listen to it here, a dangerous thing to do because I just went on an hour long parade through video game music from the 16-bit era! It's that sort of Latin American carnival sound you'd hear at mardi gras, not that I've ever been to mardi gras. Far too extroverted for me!
