Deftones - Beware from Saturday Night Wrist

Taking this thing back to the dark side for a bit. Nothing like slow, trudging drum work mated with foreboding piano and distorted guitar and heavy bass. Now pair that with Chino's eerie/haunted vocals and you've got a creepily good combination. They do feature a fairly heavy instrumental break at the end, and, to top it all off, they've got some cheesy but undeniably well suited backgrounds of crickets. They capped it off with an almost tribal music type ending. Now I've seen three major interpretations of the lyrics, from a failing relationship ("you should know i never could make it work"), alcoholism ("so go on take a drink, release"), and succumbing to temptation ("take one more"). I figure the metaphor for a crocodile infested watering hole with the herd in attendance isn't too hard to imagine. My take: it's kinda like a metaphor for life: there's enough that glitters that isn't gold, just like the pristine water that masks the threats that lurk below the surface. There's temptation to dive right in and go for it all, to lose yourself in the richness and let go. There's plenty of good in the world to be had, in the quantities you need, sometimes in great abundance or in great shortage, all often tempered with the darker side of things. We are oft warned by our elders to embrace the goodness and to be wary of being too greedy - I think the song captures that ebb and flow but with more emphasis on the darkness (Heck, the music's layout kinda hints at it: it starts low, builds into the dark chorus, ebbs to the heavy dark, flows again into chorus and bridge and the outro which distorted fades into that tribal "codetta"). I'm a natural cynic (or you might just say I'm downright depressing) so this is right up my alley. That's my two cents, I'd highly recommend you go out, find it, and give it a go.
